Friday, November 2, 2018 www.thedalharttexan.com Hereford makes it past Lady Wolves in bi-district BY BILL KELLY Editor

The Dalhart Lady Wolves played their final volleyball game of the season on Tuesday October 30 as they lost their bi-district match to Hereford at Amarillo Highland Park. The Lady Whitefaces were able to win the match 3-0. The first game started out well for Dalhart. The Lady Wolves scored the first point and took an early 2-1 lead over Hereford. The Lady Whitefaces took ad- vantage of their height advantage though and quickly took back the lead. Here- ford scored 11 straight points to take a 12-2 lead before the Lady Wolves scored again. Dalhart scored three straight to make it 12-5 Hereford, and then the Lady Whitefaces scored two straight to take a 14-5 lead. The teams then basically went back-and-forth over the next few serves, until Hereford held a 17-9 lead. The Lady Whitefaces scored three straight points and then Dalhart scored twice to make it 20-11 in favor of Hereford. That was as close as the Lady Wolves would get as Hereford went on to win 25-13 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Lady Whitefaces came out strong to begin the second game, scoring seven straight before Dalhart got on the board. Hereford then scored seven more be- fore the Lady Wolves put up two points to make it 14-3 Hereford. The teams played fairly even for a few minutes, until Hereford held a 19-7 lead. The Lady Whitefaces then outscored Dalhart 6-3 to close out the game and win by a score of 25-10. The victory gave Hereford a 2-0 lead in the match. The Lady Wolves came out in the third game determined to avoid the sweep, scoring the first two points and taking an early 4-1 lead. Hereford then fought back to close the gap to 5-4 Dalhart. The teams exchanged points over the following several minutes. Dalhart took a 6-4 lead and then Hereford scored to make it 6-5, and then the Lady Wolves led 7-5 before the Lady Whitefaces scored two points to tie the game at 7-7. Hereford scored three straight and took a 10-7 lead, but the Lady Wolves fought back and tied the game again at 10 all. The Lady Whitefaces then scored two straight to take another lead, but Dalhart kept coming back and tied the score at 12-12. The teams kept exchanging points, with first Hereford scoring and then Dalhart until it was 14-14. Hereford outscored Dalhart 4-1 to take an 18-15 lead and then the Lady Wolves scored to make it 18-16 in Hereford’s favor. Hereford scored next, and then Dalhart scored three straight to tie the game once again, this time at 19- 19. That would be as close as the Lady Wolves would get, as the Lady Whitefaces used their height to close out the game. Hereford outscored Dalhart 6-1 down the stretch to win the third game 25-20 and take the match 3-0. Hannah Holmes led the Lady Wolves with seven kills and five blocks during the match. Bethany Berngen, who is just a sophomore, was second in both categories with five kills and three blocks. Lexi Posey led with ten assists, while Madison Todd added six. Konnor White had 14 digs and Madison Todd added nine. The loss ended the season for the Lady Wolves. Seven seniors, White, Posey, Holmes, Olivia Garcia, Calie Rutherford, Tabby Pedraza and Kelsi Wing played their final game for Dalhart and will be missed next season. The Lady Wolves do have a solid group of players returning though. Madison Todd, who was the captain of the team, will be a senior next year. Berngen and Cristal Davila will both be junior next year and Rhiana Todd will be a sophomore. All played sig- nificant minutes this season and helped the team a great deal. Some JV players were moved up to varsity for the playoffs and will see quite a bit of playing time next year as well. They included Ellie Fly, Tallie Blan- co, Chesnee Day, Caryce Guerrero, and Hali Ledbetter. Fly and Guerrero each played for a couple of minutes against Hereford. With their returning players and these new additions, the Lady Wolves should be set for another playoff run next season.

Friday, November 2, 2018 www.thedalharttexan.com Delgado and Alcorta to run at state cross country meet BY BILL KELLY Editor

Dalhart runners Maly Delgado and Henry Alcorta will compete at the Class 4A State Cross Country Meet tomorrow at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Delgado was very excited to make it to state. “I feel like I’m completing my se- nior year really great.” Delgado said. “Finally getting there fills my heart.” Delgado has been to state before, but as a member of the Lady Wolves’ team. This is her first year to qualify as an individual. She said there is a difference in the two. “If you qualify as a team you have people to celebrate it with you.” Delgado said. “You make memories with those people. If you qualify individu- ally, you know you did it on your own, you know that nobody’s carrying you.” She added that making it as an individual is gratifying because she knows she put in the effort needed to make it to state. Delgado stared running cross country in seventh grade after coming to Dal- hart Junior High from one of the private school in Dalhart. She actually started almost accidently, running faster than the other students when the volleyball team was asked to go run around a field. “I didn’t know what I was getting into,” Delgado said. “But something told me that’s where I belong.” Delgado practiced twice a week with most of the other cross country runners during the summer, along with some extra practice on her own. Delgado said that she could go on and on forever when asked about how much her coach, Stephanie Vogel, has helped her. “Coach Vogel has made a big impact in my life.” Delgado said. “I’ve always called her my second mom. She’s been with me through the worst.” Delgado added that “she’ll always tell you that her runners are her kids. She makes not just great runners but great people.” Delgado’s goal at state is to make it into the top 40. “That’s hard because ev- eryone’s running 11 and low 12’s (minutes.)” Delgado does plan to keep running cross country after high school. “Right now I’m looking at Eastern New Mexico University,” Delgado said. “One of the coaches watched me at regional and said I’m on the team, all I have to do send my stuff to the college and be accepted.” Alcorta moved to Dalhart over the summer after his dad was hired as the superintendent of Dalhart ISD. He had never made it to state before, so when asked how he felt making it to state Alcorta said that he was excited, but ner- vous too. Alcorta started running cross country in eighth grade. “I was playing basket- ball and soccer and my dad convinced me to join cross country.” Alcorta said. Alcorta joined the summer workouts as soon as he made it to Dalhart, run- ning with many of the other cross country team members on Mondays and Wednesdays. When asked about Coach Vogel, he said that she has helped him a lot. “She’s helped me improve and I’ve just gone farther than I had before with her.” Alcorta said. Alcorta has two goals for the state meet. “I want to be top ten and I want to break 16 (minutes.” Alcorta said. If he does break 16 minutes, he will set a new personal record. Delgado will race at 1:20 pm on Saturday and Delgado will follow at 1:50 pm. Henry Alcorta and Maly Delgado will compete at the Class 4A State Cross Country Meet tomorrow in Round Rock. They were given a sendoff yesterday at Dalhart High. Bill Kelly | Staff Photo Hartley’s Chavez and Leaton take one final shot at state Hartley boys run at state for second straight year

BY BILL KELLY Editor

Hartley High’s Alejandro Chavez and Michaela Leaton have had cross coun- try careers that most athletes only dream of, with a ton of medals and mul- tiple trips to the state cross country meet during their time in high school. The two seniors will get one final shot at a state medal tomorrow as they run in the Class 1A State Cross Country Meet in Round Rock. Leaton was part of the state champion Hartley team her sophomore year and tomorrow will be her fourth straight trip to state. While Leaton did qual- ify for state as an individual the past couple of years, she also qualified as a member of the team. This year Leaton placed tenth at regional and qualified for state as an individual. “It is a great feeling of accomplishment.” Leaton said. Leaton said there is a difference between going to state with a team and qualifying as an individual. “It is great having a team, but going individually really shows your accomplishment as an individual.” Leaton started running cross country her seventh grade year, and said that Coach Dedra Hill talked her into it. “Coach Hill convinced me, and it has been the best thing I could ask for,” Leaton said. She added that Hill has done a great deal to help her. “She has helped shape me into a wonderful runner and helped me grow as a person.” An illness the night before the state meet last year kept Leaton from run- ning as well as she is capable of doing. She has one goal for tomorrow. “I would like to make top ten to be on the stand,” Leaton said. Leaton plans to keep running for the rest of her life. “I would love to run in college,” Leaton said. “I hope to keep competing and running throughout my whole life. Hopefully finish a few marathons.” Chavez will also be making his fourth straight trip to state, having quali- fied as an individual every year and winning regional three straight years. Hartley’s Michaela Leaton and Alejandro Chavez will compete at the state He has also helped lead the Hartley team to state the past two years. Chavez cross country meet tomorrow. Bill Kelly | Staff Photo is happy that he made it to state again. “It feels pretty good to go again.” Chavez said. After being the only Hartley boy to make it to state his first two years, Chavez said it is nice to have teammates with him. “It’s kinda cool to know people are sharing your exact pain than me just doing it by myself.” Chavez said. Chavez started running when he was 12 years old. “My family already had a reputation for being fast, so since me being a Chavez I was basically put into a team.” Chavez said. Chavez placed second at state his sophomore year and fourth last year, but he says he only has one goal at state. “All I can ask for is running my abso- lute best, that’s it.” Chavez said. Chavez hopes to go on to run at college, although it might not be in cross country. “I actually plan on being a more short distance runner in time.” Chavez said. “I don’t know what event that is so I’m just gonna let fate decide what I want at that time.” Leaton, Chavez and the rest of the Hartley boys’ team will compete tomor- row in Round Rock at the state meet at Old Settlers Park.

If roasted just a few minutes too long, pork can quickly dry out. But in his book “Cooking Slow: Reci- pes for Slowing Down and Cooking More” (Chronicle Foods), author, teacher and food industry consul- tant Andrew Schloss notes that immers- ing pork loin in an oil bath protects it from drying out, re- sulting in a juicy, de- licious meal. Those who want to try this method can whip up Schloss’s recipe for “Slow-Fried Pork Loin in Mustard Oil.” Slow-Fried Pork Loin in Mustard Oil Makes 6 servings

Combine the oil and mustard seed in a Dutch oven and place over me- dium heat until the oil reaches 350 F on a deep-frying ther- mometer. A wooden chopstick or the end of a wooden spoon inserted into the oil will emit bubbles when the oil is at the right temperature. While the oil is heat- ing, remove the pork from the refrigerator. Pat dry. When the oil is up to temperature, turn off the heat. Us- ing tongs, carefully submerge the meat in the hot oil. Cover Answer to Oct 23 Sudoku the pot, transfer to the oven and cook until the pork is 150 F, about 2 hours. Lift the pork from the oil onto a bak- ing sheet to catch any oil drips. Carve the pork across the grain on the diago- nal into thin slices. Drizzle with some of the mustard-scented oil and serve.
