Los Angeles: Madlib Invazion. (MMS-027), 2015. Daan van den Brink (s4369106) Email: [email protected] Rap Record for Sale – Sampling practice and commodification in Madlib Invazion. MA Thesis Creative Industries. Date of submission: 6 Aug. 2018 Supervisor: dr. Vincent Meelberg Email: [email protected] Abstract. Within our capitalistic society, much if not all the music we consume is to be regarded as commodities. Musical products are subject to numerous processes, rules and regulations, one of which being copyright. Essentially, copyright enables the musical product as commodity, and as David Hesmondhalgh puts it, has become the main means of commodifying culture. A musical practice that is particularly at odds with copyright is sampling, which makes use of previously recorded material through recombination and re-contextualisation. For the use of samples, a proper copyright license must be in place, whether the sample-based song is being monetized on or released for free. However, hip hop producers often do not comply in licensing the use of copyrighted material in their music, which challenges not only the copyright regime, but also copyright as a means of commodification. Over the years, copyright has become an extensive set of rights, resulting in the criminalization of unlicensed use of samples, but not in prevention, as technological advancements have made sampling a more widespread and accessible practice. Within this thesis, the sample-based work of Madlib as released on his Madlib Invazion label is used as a case study to map the current copyright regime, the costs of licensing and the risks of unlicensed sampling.

  • J Dilla and the Future of Humanity by Kyle Etges the First Time One Listens
J Dilla and the Future of Humanity By Kyle Etges The first time one listens to the track “Swamp Thing” by Hiatus Kaiyote, your first thought might be “what the fuck am I listening to?” But then a weird thing happens: the groove envelops you, and for reasons you can’t quite articulate, your bobbing your head right along with Perrin Moss. This track, among many others from the last 20 years, is a perfect example of the wobble beat: a beat that feels like it’s constantly teetering on a complete trainwreck, and yet it gives us one of the deepest grooves found in all modern music. How can something so volatile be so much fun to listen to? The “wobble” or “Dilla” beat is not only an obvious indication of progressive neo-soul, but also a sign of a shift in our tastes in music, and our reactions to the progress of humanity itself. The wobble beat itself can be hard to describe, but as we delve further into its inner workings, it will become evident that that’s the whole idea. This drum beat is usually credited to J Dilla (aka James Dewitt Yancey), a hugely influential music producer from Detroit until his untimely death in 2006. During his career, J Dee worked with the likes of Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, The Pharcyde, and many many more, and has had a seminal impact on hip hop and neo-soul music in the 21st century. At the time of this writing, I am not sure of the specific session drummer who first laid down this complicated beat.

Born and raised in Detroit MI, Joylette Hunter has always been attuned to the needs and challenges of the urban community, and the issues that faced social classes within the city. A product of the Detroit public school system, Joylette attended Northwestern High School and participated in several community youth programs. After graduating, she began to work in the nonprofit sector for organizations such as City of Detroit Youth Department; Safe Center, a nonprofit whose mission was to help the under privileged residents of Detroit; and the Detroit Association Of Black Organizations, a nonprofit that empowered, equipped, and served, other local organizations. Along with doing work for nonprofits, Joylette always remained a dedicated youth advocate. She spent her free time running latchkey and tutorial programs for local children and also worked in a day care. Joylette met her life partner James "J Dilla" Yancey at an early age and the two quickly became inseparable. While sharing a home with Yancey, Joylette had the privilege and duty of hosting some of Hip Hop and R&B's biggest stars at Yancey's famous home studio. Q-Tip, Dwele, Busta, Common, Slum Village, ?uestlove, Guru, and Mos Def, were among some that graced her home. Although her living room became a literal who's who in music, Joylette always remained focused on her nonprofit work and involvement in community programs. She went on to continue her college education at Wayne State University and later at University of Phoenix. In October of 2001 Joylette and James' daughter Ja'Mya Yancey was born and Joylette dedicated her life to her most important role, being a mother.
