Network Migrator for NetApp

Policy-based Data Archiving for NetApp FAS with QStar Network Migrator Easily move infrequently accessed files from costly NetApp FAS (Filers) into secure, lower cost storage

Network Appliance (NetApp) has long been a market leader in the “Filer” data storage market. A Filer, also known as Fabric-Attached Storage (FAS), is a NAS storage solution that stores unstructured data (files). Windows, and Mac clients can store and retrieve data. NetApp Filers now offer massive scalability, with maximum capacities in the tens of petabytes.

While scalability benefits organizations with rapid data growth issues, it also results in rapid increasing storage andstorage management costs. As data needs to be protected from accidental or malicious loss or corruption, organizations with NetApp Filers typically choose either (or both) NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) or replication to a second NetApp Filer. This makes a costly primary storage system even more expensive.

QSTAR NETWORK MIGRATOR HIGHLIGHTS

QStar Network Migrator provides a method to reduce the need for NDMP backup or • Optimize costly primary storage replication, by securely archiving files that are infrequently accessed. Archived files can • Reduce NDMP backup or replication reside on lower-cost NAS disk, or with the addition of QStar’s Archive Manager, on tape libraries, object storage or cloud storage. Requests for files that reside in the archive are • Archive to lower cost disk automatically passed on, as the files remain readily available. • Reduces storage costs HOW DOES IT WORK? • File retention management NetApp designed their (ONTAP) with an optional API (Application • Secure data preservation Programmable Interface) solution called FPolicy. QStar’s Network Migrator software • Transparent access to users integrates with FPolicy API commands to identify files that meet policies, created by Administrators, to migrate infrequently accessed files to an archive location. Existing OPTION NetApp capacity can then be re-used for active content, reducing the requirement to add • Archive to tape or cloud more expensive primary storage and the costs associated with backup or replication. QStar Network Migrator software is easy to install and runs on the Windows FPolicy server. • Encryption and compression In addition, if required, Archive Manager can co-exist on this same server. As Network Migrator moves, copies or migrates files out of NetApp, it updates the FPolicy server with the new location of the file. If a user or application reads this file the NetApp Filer works with the FPolicy server to automatically retrieve the file requested from its new location. Optionally that file can be placed back to the original NetApp Filer or read directly from the archived location. Multiple NetApp Filers can be paired with one or more archive locations, as required. In addition, Network Migrator can also manage files based on Windows, Linux, UNIX and Mac servers plus other API based NAS Filers.

WHAT IS NETWORK MIGRATOR?

Network Migrator is a data-mover / HSM solution moving files from one file system to another.

It consists of an Engine Server that maintains an SQL database of file content allowing policy simulations and reports to be generated for both primary and archive file systems.

Network Migrator software is installed on a Windows or Linux server, although for NetApp integration which requires a Windows FPolicy server, it is usually installed on Windows.

The administration of the software is web-GUI based.

AUTOMATED DATA MANAGEMENT POLICY OPTIONS

Network Migrator allows policies to be created to copy, move, migrate or securely delete files. File is copied to archive destination. COPY Original File is not affected.

File is copied to archive destination. MOVE Original File is removed.

File is copied to archive destination. MIGRATE Original File is replaced with stub.

DELETE Original File is securely removed.

ADVANCED OPTIONS

Administrators can select additional advanced features to help preserve data as required based on company policies and workflow: • Versioning allows a pre-set number of file versions to be maintained in the archive. Older versions are renamed with a dateextension, stubs will link only to the most recently written file. Older versions are available by browsing the archive file system. • Retention Management policies can be created to ensure files cannot be deleted or overwritten. • Digest Calculation options are available to confirm that data retrieved is identical to that originally archived. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

NetApp Filer running ONTAP 7 or above (in 7-mode or clustered cDOT mode) Windows 2008, 2012 and 2016 for Network Migrator, FPolicy Server and optional Archive Manager. Windows clustering is also supported for high availability options.
