Subject : Urgent Intervention for Saving the Leopards and Wildlife of Aarey Forest 5 wild species in IUCN's Red List - Near Threatened or Vulnerable category under threat ! Dear Sir,

We are a Mumbai based NGO working on Wildlife Conservation, predominantly Leopards of Mumbai, India. We have been working on reducing Man-Leopard conflicts in the Aarey region of Mumbai since last 10 years. Today, Mumbai the financial capital of India battles on the 4th position as the World's Most polluted Megacity (WHO) and the citizen are trying to save their green lungs - Aarey Forest and its wildlife, most of which are listed in IUCNs Red-List, many inching close to the endangered category, currently in the threatening and vulnerable categories.

At this juncture, the citizen of Mumbai look forward to IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), which is the global authority on the status of the natural world working on the measures needed to safeguard it covering species survival, environmental law, protected areas, ecosystem management etc. India is proud to have you, Dr. Saxena as Chief of IUCN India with your expertise in Environment and Wildlife as a senior IFS officer who has worked on the grounds as well as at MOEF (Ministry of Environment and Forest). And Mr. Zhang Xinsheng's, President of IUCN and founder of Eco Forum in China being an ex Minister, People Republic of China would appreciate the citizen's concern.

A brief Background on Aarey Forest, Mumbai : Aarey Forest in Mumbai is a 3000 acre green lung, a habitat to 9 Leopards besides various species of mammals, birds, reptiles and butterflies in total around 290 wild species as below : (Mirza and Sanap, 2010) and also has been home to new species being discovered in recent times (Bauer and Agrawal, 2016; Sanap, Celeb and Joglekar, 2019)

The current status :  Aarey Forest as per government records was transferred to the Forest department in 1969 and is contiguous to Sanjay Gandhi National Park  The Government records in 2019 confirm presence of Leopards (earlier communication to IUCN President dated September 7th attached for your reference) - In the last 3 years (2016, 2017 and 2018), 7 (Seven) Leopards were rescued by the Forest department in the Aarey Region. Sharing 4 Press articles.

The current Issue :  Currently, a Maintenance shed for washing and maintaining the proposed Metro coaches for Metro III is being proposed. This calls for cutting of 2702 trees and destruction of Habitat of the Wildlife.  The Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study basis which JICA Japan has sanctioned the loan has stated that there is no Wildlife in Aarey Forest and various facts are in-correct (Sharing a summary note and 2 press articles for reference)  Aarey Forest is around ~3 kilometers from Sanjay Gandhi National Park so any construction activity is not permitted within 4 kilometers of any national park (as per Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 or MOEF's guideline on Eco Senstive Zone under the provision of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986)

Our Request There are various evidences available on the presence of wildlife including 9 Leopards in Aarey (Sharing some for reference - We can share innumerable pictures, videos and press articles upon demand).

We request IUCN to intervene in the matter in the larger interest of the citizen of Mumbai and world at large to save and protect the wildlife of Aarey Forest including 9 Leopards which are listed in Schedule I of The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972; under the highest level of protection and also falling under the IUCN's Red List under the Vulnerable category (IUCN 2019)

We request you to kindly make a visit to Aarey Forest to witness the Wildlife, Rich Biodiversity and their habitats - Mumbai Citizen will be proud to show their #AareyForest jewel to an international conservation body like IUCN !

We have always admired Ms. Inger Anderson, the erstwhile Director General of IUCN, now, the Chairperson of UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and have marked her a copy for UNEPs and UN's kind information and intervention on the subject.

Hope IUCN will ensure that AareyForest DOES NOT become another Amazon !

We look forward to your further guidance and intervention in the matter Thanking You, Yours Truly, For Empower Foundation,

Sheetal Mehta | Secretary General +91 9833002600 +91 9833001800
