The Publishers have great pleasure in placing before the public the 1903 edition of THE TASMANIA POST OFFICE DIRECTORY, and take this opportunity to express their thanks to the business men throughout the State for their continued and increased support, and to the Deputy Postmaster-Greneral and the various Official Departments for their hearty co-operation and assistance. The work is divided into three sections: Towns, Alphabetical and Trades and Professions. THE TOWNS SECTION contains separate Street Directories of Hobart and Launcest on and Alphabetical Directories for every other Town, Township and Postal District in Tasmania. THE ALPHABETICAL SECTION contains the names for the entire State, arranged under ONE Alphabet. THE TRADES SECTION shews the Business Firms of the State, arranged under their individual trade or profession. These three classifications enable the enquirer to see at a glance, first, the names of Householders or Traders in any one Town; secondly, the address and occupation of any resident in the State; and, thirdly, the number of persons throughout Tasmania, engaged in any one trade or calling. Separate Medical, Ecclesiastical, Legal, Educational, Banking, Insurance, Mining, Pastoral and Agricultural, Local Government, Customs, Official, and Postal, and Telegraphic Directories are given, making the work comprehensive and complete. In conclusion, the Publishers hope that the present edition will be found to have fully maintained the reputation of the Tasmania Post Office Directory, and thus ensure a continued support for the next issue. Current situation Hobart is a capital city experiencing moderate population growth. The city has a diversifying economic base and is centralising services and activity in the CBD core (health and education in particular). Greater Hobart has a larger geographic footprint than Manhattan but only 13 per cent of the population. The spread out (sub- urban) nature of the city at very low density makes providing quality mass transit expensive and uncompetitive in terms of travel time. It also means that the population is highly dependent on cars for meeting their daily travel needs. This car dependence has the potential to lead to social exclusion of people who do not have access to a vehicle, it reduces the productivity of the local economy (as high vehicle capital and operating costs are largely sent off-shore) and it makes the community vulnerable to potential economic shocks (such as petrol price rises). A Southern Tasmanian Regional Land Use Strategy has been developed to manage change, growth and development over the next 25 years.
