Earlier this year, the MBA was recognised by Basketball Victoria at their annual awards night that rewards clubs and individuals that have shown excellence and commitment in the basketball community. We received 5 awards across the evening in the following categories: - McDonald’s Junior Program of the Year, - Josh Martin - Bentleigh Lakers Vice President, was named Domestic Coach of the Year, - Alison Cody - MBA’s General Manager, received the Jack Carter Memorial Award for being the Basketball Administrator of the Year, and - Mark Mackie and Frida Eierweis were honored with Bronze Service Awards for 15 years service to basketball. These accolades were befitting and deserved recognition for the association itself, and our valued individual contributors, that showed how we are continuing to grow and succeed in a wide variety of areas. The MBA itself has enjoyed year on year growth with membership numbers increasing to never before seen levels. These include: 309 Domestic Summer teams 305 Domestic Winter teams 26 VJBL teams 4 Big V teams 1 VIL Team I’d like to make special mention of our McKinnon Superstars who recently played in the first VJBL Inclusive (VIL) Grand Final. The VIL is a fantastic initiative that allows people with disabilities to participate alongside their peers on a Friday night. With the McKinnon team made up of players selected from our Saturday morning All Abilities program, the Superstars fought valiantly against the much-fancied Westernport team, ultimately falling short 38 – 27 in a tight contest. The above growth, despite the resource restrictions in place, shows how determined each of our domestic clubs are (with their amazing networks of volunteers and related officials!) to ensure that all who want to play the game of basketball are able to in their local communities. Along with everyone who made the past year of basketball a success, exceptional thanks should go to the parents of all junior players involved - for their contributions both on and off the court. Without them, we wouldn’t have uniforms washed; kids turning up to games on time; sausages sold on a Saturday morning; or countless other examples that enable the association to run as well as it does. 2 MBA Yearbook 2013 to seeing you at the games as we start the next chapter of the MBA story, and best of luck in the seasons ahead. to Cheers, seeing you at the games as we start the next chapter of the MBA story, and best of luck in the seasons ahead. As shown previously, our domestic programs have developed across both summer and winter seasons, and both male and female participation across the age groups is at an all time high. A further illustration of this is in in our representative program, where we have seen 3 teams competing in VC, and 10 teams successfully making it to finals. Both our U12-3 and U18-2 girls were Grand Finalists in their respective divisions, finishing runners up. For the 2nd year in a row all 4 Senior Cougar teams made it to finals, and while no championships made their way home, 3 teams lost to the eventual winners of the individual divisions. Members from each of the teams were nominated for 28 end of season awards, and were shortlisted for a total of 18 of these, which is a phenomenal effort. Our Youth League stars Michael James, Megan Hendry and Katrina Twirdy all came away winners, as did Bosko Kostur of the D1M. A key highlight for both our Big V program and the Association as a whole came at the end of the season, when the McKinnon Cougars were awarded the very prestigious Big V Club of the Year! This is an outstanding achievement and reflects the true strengths of our program, both on and off the court. Other notable features of the past year were the recent inclusion of the Raptors Basketball Club as an official member club of the MBA, and the inaugural ‘Pink Out’ weekend to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. We at the MBA wanted to create something that could proactively offer hope to women with breast cancer and the families who go on the difficult journey with them. All players and attendees wore a touch of pink over the weekend for any of the programs or games they participated in, and our senior programs proudly wore specially made uniforms in their BigV games as recognition of the cause. The weekend was brought to a close with a cocktail party, which saw a Pink impersonator entertain attendees, and raffles and auctions distribute a wealth of generous gifts donated by local businesses and members. All in all an amazing $13,609 was raised for BCNA, and we’re all looking forward to topping that amount when our 2nd annual event kicks off next year! On behalf of the MBA, I would like to thank everyone for their support, input and positive attitude towards every component that makes up the association. We’re all a part of the game that we love because we see the benefit it can bring to our kids, ourselves, and the community as a whole – both in AND outside of the 4 white lines. I look forward to seeing you at the games as we start the next chapter of the MBA story, and best of luck in the seasons ahead. Cheers, Axel Dench 3 Victoria Basketball Awards Night The McKinnon Basketball Association shone at this year’s Basketball Victoria Awards held on Tuesday 30th April. The annual event awards those clubs and individuals that have shown excellence and commitment in the basketball community. The MBA are extremely proud to be the recipients of five prestigious awards. The recognition has shown that the McKinnon Basketball Association is continuing to grow and succeed in a wide variety of areas. The night began with McKinnon Basketball being named as the McDonald’s Junior Program of the Year, and what an achievement this was! The MBA offers a variety of programs for individuals from 3 years old and up, and of all abilities. Despite extremely restricted facilities, the MBA continue to provide the rapidly growing member base with excellent and successful programs from Baby Boomers and Aussie Hoops to Rep Ready and All Abilities. The MBA’s domestic competition has experienced strong growth with the addition of more than 30 teams last year, 18 of which were female. Moreover, the MBA’s VJBL representative program has continued to go from strength to strength with 25 teams being entered last year, 12 of which made finals and the 16-1 girls taking out the championship! Four of the representative teams earned their place in the top Victorian Championship division last year, with this continuing in season 2013. A key highlight and one that the MBA are very proud of is the pathway that has been established and is being utilised by players across age groups. More and more we are seeing players transition from our earlier programs like Aussie Hoops and Slam Jam, to playing competitive basketball in both the Domestic and Representative competitions. The MBA are extremely proud of this Award, however continue to strive to do better in all facets of our junior program. Bentleigh Lakers Vice President, Josh Martin, was named Domestic Coach of the Year for his commitment and excellence within his Lakers coaching position. Josh began working with the MBA in 2007 and since then has coached 10 Lakers teams to a championship. Josh has worked tirelessly to improve his coaching and the abilities and performance of all of his players. Josh has two sons who both play for the Lakers and the Cougars in the VJBL competition, in which Josh also coaches. Josh is always looking to better his coaching and that of his counterparts by attending and conducting various coaching clinics. Josh is an extremely valuable asset to the MBA and is an excellent example of the MBA’s commitment to high quality coaching. The MBA’s General Manager, Alison Cody, was the very deserving winner of the Jack Carter Memorial Award for her exceptional commitment to the Association. The Award has recognized Alison as the Basketball Administrator of the Year for her outstanding contribution to Victorian Basketball in 2012.
