General Ride Information Route Conditions The Davis Double Century route spans four counties and a variety of road conditions ranging from smooth asphalt to hard-pack dirt roads. Following are a few of the more challenging sections of road on the course that will require your heightened attention. Highway 128 from Winters to Lake Berryessa There will be normal weekend traffic on the Double Century route during the ride. That includes people in trucks taking their ski boats up to the lake. Some of these people haven't any idea how much room they need for their trucks, let alone their ski boat trailers, so be prepared to share the road with them! Big Canyon from Middletown to Seigler Canyon Road Big Canyon has four miles of unpaved, hard-packed dirt road. On the positive side, Big Canyon is beautiful, quiet, partially shaded, lightly traveled by vehicle traffic, and all in all a much more pleasant climb than our recent route up Highway 175 to Cobb. On the less positive side, less traffic means less road maintenance. Take your time on the dirt stretch of the road and watch for potholes and patchy pavement along this entire stretch. The weather this year has been hard on all roadways so always be alert to pot holes. Highway 16 from Cache Creek Casino to Esparto There will be heavy vehicle traffic on Highway 16 for the 7 miles between the Cache Creek Casino and County Rd 85B. Sections of this road have no shoulder. We have asked for an increased CHP presence for this section of Highway 16 and will increase our signage to help drivers understand that an event is in progress. We urge all DC participants to be especially alert and use extreme caution for this short 7-mile section. Make an extra effort to get past this 7-mile section before dark.

–7 – Century Route: Road 12a Road 12a has four miles of unpaved, hard-packed dirt road. Half of this road is fairly smooth hard packed dirt while the second half has gravel and requires caution. On the positive side, Road 12a is flat to gently rolling, goes through quite vineyards, surrounded by is the Dunnigan Hills, and has little to no traffic Take your time on the dirt stretch of the road and watch for potholes.

Heat Conditions Year after year, many riders suffer from the same problems – dehydration and heat prostration. The body uses gallons of fluids for this event, and if you do not replace those lost fluids, your ability to function is greatly reduced. • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! • Hydrate before and during the ride. • Drink continuously and do not wait until you are thirsty; by then, it will be too late! • You should consume a pint of fluid approximately every half hour. • Carry two water bottles on your bicycle and drink at each rest stop. • In the heat of the afternoon, keep yourself cool by pouring water over your head and torso. • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun, dust, and bugs. • Use sunscreen to prevent sunburn, and reapply it frequently! Cold Conditions Nearly as many times as the weather has been hot, it has been unseasonably cold. Check the weather before you start. If there is any chance of rain, carry warmer clothing. Be prepared, and dress accordingly. Early Morning and Night Riding For many riders, riding a double century entails riding in darkness, either early morning, late night, or both. For your safety, we have the following requirements: • We require lights and reflectors on all bikes doing the 200 miler. • We may require that after sunset you ride in a group of at least three, and preferably five, riders. Rest stop captains will be grouping riders for this purpose. Please cooperate with this procedure. It is for your safety, and you may meet some new riders and future friends. • The Davis Bike Club will not provide lights or extra batteries. It is the rider’s responsibility to be visible in all periods of reduced visibility. Miscellaneous Drop Bags 200 milers, If you want to have a small (grocery-bag size) bag transported from the Start/Finish to the Guinda rest stop (mile 162), you may leave your bag in the Drop Box at check in. Use your rider number and name to identify your bag. Please bring your own bag; we will not provide bags for this purpose. –8 – You will be able to leave your gear at any rest stop and it will be brought back to the Finish area. Make sure any gear you leave is labeled with your name and rider number. The gear will be delivered back to the Start/Finish after the rest stop closes. In deciding whether to shed gear during the ride, please take into consideration the possibility that you may be back at the finish hours before your gear will arrive. Please claim any dropped items or marked clothing left at a rest stop no later than 10:00 am on Sunday, May 20. Items not claimed by the 10:00 am deadline will be donated to local thrift stores. While we will endeavor to make sure everything makes it back to the Start/Finish area, we expressly do not assume any responsibility for items left at a rest stop. Lost and Found We will collect lost and found items at the Start/Finish. Please claim any lost items or marked clothing left at a rest stop or the Start/Finish no later than 10:00 am on Sunday morning. Items not claimed by the 10:00 am deadline will be donated to local thrift stores. Registration Transfer Policy In order to transfer a registration: • The registered rider must email a transfer request to [email protected] before 6:00 pm., Sunday, May 13. • No late requests will be honored. • The transfer request email must include: o The original rider's name, address, email address and telephone. o The new rider's name, age, address, email address, telephone, and emergency contact name. • Transfer will be confirmed by email only. • The new rider must present the email confirmation at pre-ride check in and sign the waiver to be eligible to ride. • Any financial arrangements are strictly between the original and new rider. Gear Check We strive to make the Davis Double Century the best supported double we can. Nevertheless, it is up to you to ensure that your bicycle is in top working order, that you are properly clothed, and that you have taken care of any special needs you have. To that end, below is a partial check-list of the minimum items you should have to help you make sure you are properly equipped for the ride. You may not participate without one! • Lights are required if you might possibly be out in the dark. You may not participate without one. • This is not a race. There is no official starting time. We do not track your time. No awards are given for completion time; so ease off, enjoy the ride, and finish in one piece. • STOP at STOP signs. Several intersections along the route will be controlled by CHP officers. If an officer waves you through an intersection, you may proceed without stopping. For all others, however, you must stop. DBC corner marshals have no authority to wave you through an intersection. They are there to help keep you on the correct route in the hours before daylight or where the route may be confusing or dangerous. The CHP and local law enforcement agencies have been involved in planning this event and are concerned for your safety and the safety of everyone on the road. They will enforce traffic laws for all traffic. Please obey the rules of the road. Ride to the right, STOP AT SIGNALS and STOP SIGNS, and use proper lighting before and after sunset. • Ride single-file close to the right shoulder. • Do not impede the flow of traffic. • Private SAGS are not allowed. Anyone using a private SAG will be marked DNF. • Remember: “Every person riding a bicycle upon a street or highway has all the rights and is subject to all the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle...” (Vehicle Code 21200) • The use of earphones in both ears is not permitted under state vehicle code; leave your iPod at home and enjoy a conversation with a friend or new acquaintance. –10 – • We will adhere strictly to the posted rest stop closing times. If a cyclist has not reached a rest stop by the stated closing time, he or she will be sagged forward to the next rest stop to continue riding. • If at any time a rider is judged by our rest stop or SAG staff to be physically or mentally unfit to continue, that rider will either rest until considered fit or be required to SAG in. Please help our staff do their jobs by following their advice about sagging. • Keep your head up, your eyes and ears open, and ride safely! Reminder and Warning: • The California Highway Patrol is very concerned about instances of unlawful and unsafe riding they have observed in prior years of the Davis Double Century and in other organized century rides. The Davis Bike Club will be cooperating with the CHP to identify those few riders whose unlawful, unsafe, and discourteous behavior threatens the safety and enjoyment of the DC for other riders and volunteers. The Davis Bike Club will enforce the rules governing the Double Century by disqualifying offending riders from the DC and from future Davis Bike Club events. • You can expect to see the CHP patrolling the Double Century route as usual. They will cite Double Century participants for vehicle code violations, and they will notify the Davis Bike Club of unlawful or unsafe riding by Double Century participants. In addition, route marshals, SAG drivers, and other Double Century volunteers will report violations of traffic laws or Double Century rules, as well as discourteous behavior by Double Century participants. Travel and Accommodations Staying in Davis • Hotels See Pre-Ride Information above for local hotel information. • Camping There are no provisions for camping at the Davis Double Century. Overnight camping is not allowed in the City of Davis. • Public Transportation Davis is served by Amtrak and Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor system of trains and buses. The train depot is in downtown Davis, adjacent to hotels and less than a ten minute ride from the Davis Double Start/Finish. Please consider using one of these alternatives to driving. • Traveling with a Family If you are considering traveling with others who will not be riding the Double Century, the downtown offers plenty of attractions to keep them busy while you’re on the ride or suggest they ride one of the shorter rides: • The award winning Davis Farmers Market runs from 8 am to 1pm in Central Park • We are always looking for volunteers.
