Torture Is a Moral Issue: a Catholic Study Guide
TORTURE IS A MORAL ISSUE: A CATHOLIC STUDY GUIDE INTRODUCTION This four-chapter discussion guide on torture was developed in early 2008, as a collaboration between the Catholic members of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and the Office of International Justice and Peace of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The chapters are designed for use by discussion groups and classes in Catholic settings, as well as by individuals, families, and others. The intent of this material is to prompt thinking and reflection on torture as a moral issue. What has Pope Benedict XVI said about the use of torture in prisons? What does the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church say about this? Have the Catholic bishops of the United States spoken out on torture? You’ll find answers to questions like those in the chapters that follow, along with reflections on torture and prisoner abuse by numerous Catholic bishops, theologians, and other commentators. Chapter 1 is devoted to Catholic thought on the dignity of every human person. For when Catholic leaders today turn attention to the use of torture in prisons of any kind anywhere in the world, they consistently view it as a violation of the human person’s God-given dignity. Chapter 2 focuses on torture itself, and the reasons why it is a source of such concern for the Church at this point in the third millennium. What forms does torture take? What reasons are given for the torture or abusive treatment of prisoners today? What specific objections are lodged by Catholic leaders against torture? Chapter 3 closely examines Jesus’ Gospel instruction to love our enemies. -

Salzman, Creighton University Michael G. Lawler, Creighton University Abstract Pope Francis has introduced the idea of a “globalization of indifference” into Catholic social teaching. He imputes indifference to “people who close their hearts to the needs of others, who close their eyes to what is happening around them, who turn aside to avoid encountering other people’s problems.” The globalization of indifference has moved beyond personal indifference and has taken on broader dimensions, which is often manifested in structural sin that violates human dignity. This essay develops in three cumulative sections. First, it explains Pope Francis’s globalization of indifference and the threat this indifference poses to the call to discipleship and solidarity. Second, it defines the virtue of solidarity in its various dimensions. Finally, it explores the theological foundations of solidarity grounded in the biblical identification of God and God’s Christ with the poor and the Christian moral imperative to confront the globalization of indifference. Keywords: common good, globalization of indifference, Pope Francis, solidarity, structural sin 125 Religion and Globalization Introduction Pope Francis begins his message for the 2016 World Day of Peace (henceforth WDP) as follows: “God is not indifferent! God cares about [hu]mankind! God does not abandon us!” (2016b: 1). Unfortunately, humankind, both individually and communally, has often been indifferent to, and has abandoned the most vulnerable neighbor, the environment, and even the God who is not indifferent. The message for WDP calls for conversion to overcome indifference and to pursue justice through service that actualizes human dignity, especially for the most vulnerable and marginalized, those whom Joerg Rieger calls “the underside” (1-5) and whom Pope Francis asserts are no longer society’s underside or disenfranchised (2013a: 53). -

Message: Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace "Ecology, Justice and Peace: The Perspective of a Global Church" At "Fragile World: Ecology & the Church" Conference De Paul University, Chicago, 8-12 April 2015. Introduction: Dear Participants of the "Fragile World: Ecology & the Church" Conference, I bring you the greetings of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, and its prayerful wishes for a very successful conference. In order to view ecology, justice and peace from the viewpoint of our global Church, I will offer my remarks today in three parts. First, I will introduce Catholic social teaching and how it addresses the nature of ecology. For this material, I will focus on the pontificates of St. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. Both of these Holy Fathers have contributed significantly to a deepened understanding of the relationship between natural and human ecology. Second, I will tell you about a practical application of this teaching that occurred when the Holy See engaged in the International Conference on Sustainable Development held in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. This was the “Rio+20” conference, so named because it took place twenty years after the first Rio conference on the environment. Finally, I shall introduce some brief contributions that the pontificate of Pope Francis has made to the legacy of the Church's teaching on natural and human ecology to-date, knowing that this will expand with the upcoming encyclical on these topics in mid- 2015. 1 Ecology in the Social Teaching of the Church It is customary to begin the account of Catholic social teaching with the encyclical Rerum novarum of Pope Leo XIII, issued in 1891. -

The agenda is a milestone be cause of its firm commitment to human rights, particularly the right to free dom of religion and conscience. His idea that human rights are the cornerstone of a well-ordered, peaceful society is a sort of leitmotif in many of his public statements, and it moved him to oppose the communist system in the early years of his pontificate. In later years, John Paul's commitment to freedom of religion and conscience became the linchpin of his dialogue with other religions as he attempted to move them toward a united commit ment for peace and away from a "clash of cultures or religions." He be lieved there was little use of holding human rights if the basic foundations for their realizations were not laid. -

Introduction Celebrating and Advancing Magisterial Discourse on the Ecological Crisis Jame Schaefer Theologians listen when the pope 1 and bishops speak. They have as sumed responsibility for preserving and proclaiming the Christian faith for Roman Catholics and how the faithful should live accordingly in the world. Referred toas the magisterium, popes and bishops have exercised this teaching authority for centuries. The perils of industrialization and other majar social issues during the nineteenth century prompted Pope Leo XIII and subsequent popes to address them through encyclicals and other statements that carry varying degrees of authority (e.g., Gaillardetz 2003). Among the major issues on which popes John Paul II (now Blessed John Paul II) and Benedict XVI (now Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) have written is the ongoing degradation of Earth that is adversely affecting materially poor and vulnerable people today, projected to severely affect future generations, and threatens the integrity of the biosphere. -

Prayers for Peace In his Angelus Address on September 1st, Pope Francis called for a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria on September 7th, the vigil of the Feast of the Birth of Mary, Queen of Peace. “The Contribution and Legacy of Populorum Progressio” Lecture on Populorum Progressio in Glasgow on Saturday 18 March 2017 Donal Dorr Thank you to the organizers for giving me the privilege of speaking at this ‘Just Faith’ Conference. I find it very heart-warming to see that the conference has been jointly organized by three key Scottish agencies: Missio, SCIAF, and ‘Justice and Peace Scotland’ I begin this talk by sharing a little of my own experience. In 1973 I went to work as a missionary in Africa. Having worked for some years in West Africa, I later spent shorter periods working in Eastern and Southern Africa. It was in Africa that I began to experience at first-hand what the Vatican Council called ‘the joys and hopes, the grief and anguish of people, especially of those who are poor or afflicted’ (GS 1). During those years, and over the years since then, the encyclical Populorum Progressio has been a foundational element in my life and work. BACKGROUND A brief word about the background to this document. Two great social encyclicals were issued by Pope John XXIII: Mater et Magistra in 1961, the year before the Second Vatican Council began, and Pacem in Terris in 1963, issued during the Council. Together they called for a theology and spirituality which put a new stress on justice, human welfare and progress. Vatican II moved even more radically in this direction. It liberated us from a dualistic and escapist spirituality and put far more focus on the continuity between this world and the next. -

On one such trip, he addressed the UN General Assembly, emphatically declaring “War never again! Never again war!” During the same period, Paul VI also saw the Second Vatican Council through to its completion. Vatican II produced an articulation of substantive peace in one of its final documents, Gaudium et Spes. This article employs an analytical yardstick through reading Gaudium et Spes in conversation with a Peace and Conflict Studies perspective, as a means to assess Paul VI’s peacemaking efforts on the levels of insight and action. -

The retreat master for the Apostolic delegate to Turkey and Greece was the Jesuit Father Rene Follet, who preached on the image of the perfect bishop according to Isidore of Seville. Roncalli wrote in his diary: The Bishop must be distinguished by his own understanding, and his adequate explanation to others, of the philosophy of history, even the history that is now, before our eyes, adding pages of blood to pages of political and social disorders. I want to re-read St. Augustine’s City of God, and draw from his doctrine the necessary material to form my own Judgment ...1 And so it was here, in Istanbul during the Second World War, while reflect- ing on the problem of nationalism, and while reflecting on the bishop as an image of the supranationalism of the Church, that Roncalli resolved to re-read St. Augustine’s City of God. It gave birth to a pattern of themes that would bear fruit exactly twenty years later. In December 1962 the fourth year of his pontificate – Pope John as- sembled a drafting committee for a new encyclical, which would be titled Pacem in terris (Peace on Earth).
