Quite simply it's one of the most entertaining, most intelligent and most thoroughly satisfying commercial American films in a very long time. She can kill you True Confessions easily as she burns toast. Dunne's best-selling novel, loosely True Confessions on an actual Los Angeles murder case, uses history as the author sees fit, and though its syntax is familiar, its concerns are more far-reaching and more psychologically complex than the fiction it recalls. It's a big novel and ''True Confessions'' is a big True Confessions. To begin with, it has America's two best actors in its leading roles, as brothers, one an up-and-coming monsignor of the Roman Catholic Church, Desmond Spellacy Robert De Nirowho is on his way toward some of the higher honors the church can bestow, and Tom Spellacy Robert DuvallDesmond's older brother, a Los Angeles detective of shabby background. Rhodes Editorial Board: Kelly Basilio, Donna Campbell, Claire Perkins, Christopher Sharrett, and Yannis Tzioumakis ReFocus is a series of contemporary methodological and theoretical approaches to the interdisciplinary analyses and interpretations of neglected American directors, from the once-famous to the ignored, in direct relationship to American culture—its myths, values, and historical precepts. The series ignores no director who created a historical space—either in or out of the studio system—beginning from the origins of American cinema and up to the present. These directors produced film titles that appear in university film history and genre courses across international boundaries, and their work is often seen on television or available to download or purchase, but each suffers from a form of “canon envy”; directors such as these, among other important figures in the general history of American cinema, are underrepresent ed in the critical dialogue, yet each has created American narratives, works of film art, that warrant attention. ReFocus brings these American film directors to a new audience of scholars and general readers of both American and Film Studies. Titles in the series include: ReFocus: The Films of Preston Sturges Edited by Jeff Jaeckle and Sarah Kozloff ReFocus: The Films of Delmer Daves Edited by Matthew Carter and Andrew Nelson ReFocus: The Films of Amy Heckerling Edited by Frances Smith and Timothy Shary ReFocus: The Films of Budd Boetticher Edited by Gary D. -

The Morning Line
THE MORNING LINE DATE: Wednesday, October 14, 2015 FROM: Melissa Cohen, Michelle Farabaugh Megan Ching PAGES: 22, including this page. Obituary for Robert DiMichiell, Jr. October 13, 2015 Robert Lawrence DeMichiell Jr. passed away last night (Monday, October 12) in Manhattan after a three year battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home with his husband Jeffrey M. Wilson at his side. DeMichiell was born on May 2, 1958 in Portland, Maine, to Robert Lawrence DeMichiell Sr. and Nan (McEvoy) DeMichiell. At the age of 2, his family moved to Kodiak, Alaska, where his father was the Commanding Officer of the LORAN station. In 1962, Robert Sr. was transferred to the faculty of the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, and the family moved to Waterford, Connecticut where they still reside. Bob Sr. passed away in 2014. As a young boy, Robert loved art and would copy any illustration he saw. With his father as his chaperone and biggest champion, he attended hundreds of art fairs with a sign, “You name it, I’ll draw it. One dollar. No dogs”. In 1980, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and moved to New York, which remained his home. DeMichiell was one of the most prolific commercial illustrators of his time, with a distinctive style that was synonymous with sophisticated New York City-based entertainment and culture. His work has appeared in the New York Times, The New Yorker (including the cover in 1993, and hundreds of theatrical illustrations for them, including the magazine’s first ever color illustration of the Blue Man Group), Entertainment Weekly (where he was a regular for many years) and Premiere Magazine's “If You Ask Me” column for 12 years. -
Program Notes
PROGRAM NOTES By Joshua S. Ritter Goodspeed Education & Library Director You don’t have to be a baseball fan to know that the New York Yankees‐Boston Red Sox rivalry bitterly divides colleagues, neighbors, families, and Goodspeed patrons. In fact, according to The Harvard Sports Analysis Collective, East Haddam is located on the frontlines of this legendary baseball feud with slightly more than half the population favoring the Red Sox. What better way for Goodspeed to bring some levity to this divisive situation than with a hilarious musical comedy? Fortunately, Joe DiPietro’s side‐splitting adaptation of Damn Yankees contemporizes the book by replacing the defunct Washington Senators with the Boston Red Sox. We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide a neutral zone where members of the Yankees Universe and Red Sox Nation can forget their bitter differences for a few hours and share some laughs when the curtain goes up. Flashing back to the middle of the 20th century, Douglass Wallop’s 1954 novel The Year The Yankees Lost the Pennant was a best‐selling major league baseball twist on the Faust fable. Damn Yankees’ genesis was set in motion when William Morris agent Albert B. Taylor brought this property to the attention of legendary producer, director, writer, and actor George Abbott. Abbott and his team had just struck gold with the smash hit musical The Pajama Game, a show based on Richard Bissel’s novel 7½ Cents. Perhaps this monumental success gave Abbott the chutzpah to take the idea of a baseball musical seriously, despite the fact that all previous attempts at creating one were unsuccessful.
