    KIWI BIBLE HEROES Te Pahi Te Pahi was one of the most powerful chiefs in the Bay of Islands at the turn of the 19th century. His principal pa was on Te Puna, an Island situated between Rangihoua and Moturoa. He had several wives, five sons and three daughters. Having heard great reports of Governor Phillip King on Norfolk Island, Te Pahi set sail in 1805 with his four sons to meet him. The ship’s master treated Te Pahi and his family poorly during the trip and on arrival decided to retain one of his sons as payments for the journey. To make matters worse, Te Pahi discovered that King had now become the Governor of New South Wales and was no longer on Norfolk Island. Captain Piper, who was now the authority on Norfolk Island, used his powers to rescue Te Pahi and his sons and treated them kindly until the arrival of the Buffalo. Te Pahi and his sons continued their journey to Sydney on the Buffalo in their quest to meet King. In Sydney they were taken to King’s residence where they presented him with gifts from New Zealand. During their stay in Sydney, Te Pahi attended the church at Parramatta conducted by Samuel Marsden. STEVEN RATUVA Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies Entanglements of Empire: Missionaries, Māori, and the Question of the Body. By Tony Ballantyne. Auckland University Press, Auckland, 2014. 376pp. NZ price: $39.99. ISBN: 9781869408268. In Entanglements of Empire, Tony Ballantyne reconstructs the British missionary enterprise in a strongly anthropological work. The framing of the book is imperial history, but the modality is decidedly ‘cultural turn’, exploring how missionary mentalities and theologies were ‘embodied’ in practice on the ground. The body – both individual bodies and their social organization – thus provides the central motif of the book. Ballantyne distinguishes what he is doing from recent works framed as proto-New Zealand narratives that conceptualize meetings or encounters between two cultural worlds, including Anne Salmond’s important work and Vincent O’Malley’s The Meeting Place (2012). Ballantyne is critical of the way this analytical frame buttresses and sometimes reflects New Zealand’s ‘state ideology of biculturalism’. Against such nationalisms, his is a ‘new imperial history’ in which the Bay of Islands is considered as a particular site that was progressively incorporated into ever-expanding imperial networks. Neither is the book a narrative history, instead being a series of thematically and historiographically driven assessments of the New Zealand Protestant missionary archive, with a focus on the period from 1814 to 1840. In Chapter One, Ballantyne deftly outlines the growth of British imperial reach into the Pacific, beginning with Cook’s voyages.

    ‘A Living Thing’: The Whakakotahitanga Flagstaff and its Place in New Zealand History VINCENT O’MALLEY The story of Hone Heke’s successful efforts in felling the flagstaff upon Maiki Hill at Kororareka four times between July 1844 and March 1845 – the fourth occasion marking the start of the Northern War between the British with their Maori allies and Heke’s followers – is widely known.1 The fate of the flagstaff after the war came to an inconclusive end at Ruapekapeka in January 1846 is, however, less appreciated. Yet the flagstaff’s subsequent history reveals just as much about the broader relationship between northern Maori and the Crown as the events upon Maiki Hill between 1844 and 1845 disclose about the breakdown in that relationship. Throughout the period between 1846 and 1857, Ngapuhi leaders at various times proposed to re-erect a flagstaff. Their suggestions met with at best lukewarm support from Crown officials, who worried that, regardless of who erected the flagstaff, the Crown would ultimately be required to defend it. Hence, when the pou kara known as Whakakotahitanga was erected on Maiki Hill in January 1858, Crown assistance was minimal. The decision to erect the new flagstaff had been made solely by northern Maori and was intended as an emblem of reconciliation and unity in the wake of the Northern War. These sentiments were scarcely reciprocated. Crown officials remained apprehensive about the strength of northern Maori ‘attachment’ to the government and feared that the flagstaff might again become a source of trouble and unrest. Later, as the government gradually gained a firmer grip over the north, such fears were put to bed.
