Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Wildland Urban Interface Approved Plant List
WILDLAND URBAN INTERFACE APPROVED PLANT LIST This approved plant list has been developed to serve as a tool to determine the placement of vegetation within the Wildland Urban Interface areas. The approved plant list has been compiled from several similar lists which pertain to the San Francisco Bay Area and to the State of California. This approved plant list is not intended to be used outside of the San Mateo County area. The “required distance” for each plant is how far the given plant is required to be from a structure. If a plant within the approved plant list is not provided with a “required distance”, the plant has been designated as a fire-resistant plant and may be placed anywhere within the defensible space area. The designation as a fire-resistant plant does not exempt the plant from other Municipal Codes. For example, as per Hillsborough Municipal Code, all trees crowns, including those that have been designated as fire resistant, are required to be 10 feet in distance from any structure. Fire resistant plants have specific qualities that help slow down the spread of fire, they include but are not limited to: • Leaves tend to be supple, moist and easily crushed • Trees tend to be clean, not bushy, and have little deadwood • Shrubs are low-growing (2’) with minimal dead material • Taller shrubs are clean, not bushy or twiggy • Sap is water-like and typically does not have a strong odor • Most fire-resistant trees are broad leafed deciduous (lose their leaves), but some thick-leaf evergreens are also fire resistant. -

Growth of Legume Tree Species Growing in the Southwestern United States Ursula K. Schuch1 and Margaret Norem2 Plant Sciences Department1 and Desert Legume Program2 University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 Abstract Vegetative shoot growth of eleven legume tree species growing under field conditions in the Southwestern United States in Arizona were monitored over two periods of twelve months. Species included plants native to the Southwestern United States, Mexico, South America, and Australia. Based on shoot extension and branch differentiation species could be grouped into three categories. Fast growing legumes included Acacia farnesiana, A. pendula, Olneya tesota, Parkinsonia floridum, and Prosopis chilensis. Intermediate growth rates were monitored for A. jennerae, A. salicina, and A. visco. Slow growing species in this study included A. stenophylla, P. microphylla, and P. praecox. No buds, flowers, or pods were observed for P. microphylla, O. tesota, and P. chilensis during the study. Of the remaining species those native to the Americas flowered in spring and those native to Australia flowered in fall or winter. Introduction Southwestern landscapes, characterized by a semiarid climate and poor soils, rely on many native and non- native legume species for shade and aesthetic value. Desirable traits of trees for desert landscapes include fast growth, drought tolerance, and resistance to biotic stresses. In addition, cultivated trees are prized for showy flowers, little or no litter, lack of spines, and an upright growth habit (Dimmitt, 1987). Of the 11 species used in this study, six are commonly planted in the northern Sonoran Desert at low and mid elevations. The other species are used in the same area to a lesser extent, although they grow well in a semi-arid climate. -

Riverside County has multiple Sunset Zones as well as microclimates within those zones which can affect plant viability and mature size. As such, plants and use categories listed herein are not exhaustive, nor do they constitute automatic approval; all proposed plant material is subject to review by the County. In some cases where a broad genus or species is called out within the list, there may be multiple species or cultivars that may (or may not) be appropriate. The specific water needs and sizes of cultivars should be verified by the designer. Site specific conditions should be taken into consideration in determining appropriate plant material. This includes, but is not limited to, verifying soil conditions affecting erosion, site specific and Fire Department requirements or restrictions affecting plans for fuel modifications zones, and site specific conditions near MSHCP areas. -

Listing Advice - Page 1 of 13 and Current Grazing Regimes, and the Occurrence of Recent Rain (NSW Scientific Committee 2005)
Advice to the Minister for the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts from the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC) on Amendments to the List of Ecological Communities under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) 1. Name Nominations were received for two ecological communities: Weeping Myall Open Woodland of the Riverina and NSW South-western Slopes Bioregions; and Weeping Myall Open Woodland of the Darling Riverine Plains and Brigalow Belt South Bioregions. The two nominated ecological communities intergrade and exhibit numerous similarities such that the Committee considers them to be sufficiently similar and merit listing as a single ecological entity. Furthermore, the ecological community also occurs in the Murray-Darling Depression, Cobar Peneplain and Nandewar Bioregions. Therefore, reference to bioregions has been removed to simplify the name of the ecological community. The species Acacia pendula is known as Boree in southern NSW and as Myall in northern NSW and Queensland. However, as it shares these common names with other Acacia species, it is considered appropriate to retain the common name ‘Weeping Myall’ as it applies exclusively to this species. Finally, as the density of trees in the ecological community varies from site to site, references to the density of the woodland are excluded from the name. The name of the ecological community is therefore Weeping Myall Woodlands. 2. Description The Weeping Myall Woodlands occur in a range from open woodlands to woodlands, generally 4-12 m high, in which Weeping Myall (Acacia pendula) trees are the sole or dominant overstorey species. Other common names for Weeping Myall include Myall, Boree, Balaar, Nilyah, Bastard Gidgee, and Silver Leaf Boree.
