COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

Message from Mark Taylor AO

Firstly, I would like to offer my congratulations to the Northern District Cricket Club and the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Coaches’ Association (HKHDCCA) for this great initiative. It is a wonderful that provides young local cricketers the opportunity to experience cricket in other countries. Following on from the successful tour of Sri Lanka two years ago, the tour this year will embrace the West Indies and the USA. I have great memories of trips to the West Indies and I know the players and officials will enjoy the hospitality and friendships that come with touring, as well as being great ambassadors for the game. My recollections of touring the Caribbean in 1991 and 1995 with the Australian cricket team are of tough competitive cricket, played in a relaxed and colourful atmosphere. I’m sure all tourists will enjoy not only the cricket, but the entire Caribbean experience. To the whole touring party, I wish the very best for the tour and the future. I know that all of us who love and watch the game of cricket are delighted to see these kinds of tours, which provide for the development of cricket not only in Australia, but throughout the world. All the best.

Mark Taylor AO

Mark Taylor AO played 104 Test matches for Australia (1989-99); 50 as Captain. Highest Test score – 334 no. Australian of the Year - 1999; Hall of Fame - Cricket Australia and CNSW; Life Member – Northern District CC; Hon. Life Member – MCC Lords. COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

Captain’s Report – Lachlan Shaw (On the field)

Match 1 (29 June 2017) – at Queens College, Husbands St James, Bridgetown, Barbados Coaches’ Association / Northern District CC U/15 9/124 [30 overs] (C. Rose 50, L. Shaw 27, J. Armstrong 3/14) def. Queens College U/15 7/66 [30 overs] (J. Fullagar 3/6, L. Shaw 2 stumpings) by 58 runs Looking to start the tour off on the right foot, our first game was shaping up for the players to leave a strong impression in Barbados. Up against the Queens College we knew this would be a tough game from the beginning. In trouble early, we lost a couple of quick wickets but Charlie Rose (50) and Lachlan Shaw (27) formed a solid partnership to get us to a reasonable total of 124. Wickets were hard to find throughout the but runs were also dry for the home team struggling but Jordan Fullagar was the stand out bowler with 3/6.

Match 2 (30 June 2017) – at Desmond Haynes Oval, Black Rock, Barbados Coaches’ Association / Northern District CC U/15 6/204 [35 overs] (J. Camp 64no, W. Coffey 48, L. Shaw 39) def. Graydon Sealy Secondary School 31 [19.4 overs] (C. Davenport 3/1, L. Roughley 2/1, O. Kirk 2/9) by 173 runs We headed into the next match with the aim to build on our last performance. Batting first against the Graydon Sealy Secondary school, we started off strong with Will Coffey (48) and Lachlan Shaw (39) building a strong partnership at the top of the order. Jayden Camp finished off the innings in style with a brilliant 64 . Our bowling attack displayed just how good they were ripping through the oppositions , bowling them out for 31. Stand out bowlers to Cooper Davenport (3/1), Lachlan Roughly (2/1) and Oscar Kirk (2/9).

Match 3 (2 July 2017) – at Desmond Haynes Oval, Black Rock, Barbados Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 5/202 [35 overs] (C. Rose 64, L. Shaw 60 [109 run 2nd wicket partnership], C. Miller 20no, J. Hiley 19, N. Forde 3/28) def. Desmond Haynes Young Lions Academy (Carlton Junior Cricket) 74 [26 overs] (R. Williams 34, J. Hiley 5/16, V. Ravindran 2/10) by 128 runs Now settling into the conditions and understanding each other’s abilities on the cricket field, we wanted to keep putting the home teams under pressure. Up against the Desmond Haynes Young Lions Academy (known locally as Carlton Junior Cricket), we knew that they would be a very strong opposition. We lost an early wicket but a 109 run 2nd wicket partnership steered us in the right direction with Charlie Rose (64) and Lachlan Shaw (60). A late partnership with Corey Miller (20 not out) and Joe Hiley (19) got us to a good total of 5/202 after 35 overs. Our bowling was once again very strong with Varun Ravindran (2/10) bowling an outstanding opening spell followed by an extremely tight spell from Joe Hiley coming on the get (5/16) and the first 5 wicket haul of the tour (and Joe’s first 5/for of his career).

Match 4 (3 July 2017) – at Combermere School, Waterford, St. Michael, Barbados Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 5/131 [17 overs] (C. Miller 50, J. Camp 51no) def. Combermere School U/15 44 [12.3 overs] (A. Jackson 3/1, L. Fisher 2/13, J. Baxter 2/13) by 87 runs Now in our fourth match and looking to keep our winning streak alive, we were up against Combermere School U/15 team. As a of heavy rain we were left with a wet pitch, a change of grounds and a reduction to a T20. Corey Miller (50) and Jayden Camp (51 not out) were the entertaining batsman to get going and hitting balls everywhere. We put pressure on them early as a few bowlers and our bowling attack in general had a good day with the opposition finding it extremely hard to score. Aidan Jackson (3/1), Lachlan Fisher (2/13) and Jarod Baxter (2/13). A great all-round performance and another victory for the touring team.

Match 5 (4 July 2017) – at Empire Cricket Club, Bank Hall, Bridgetown, Barbados Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 132 [31.4 overs] (J. Camp 28, J. Hiley 19, J. Baxter 18, J. Fullagar 16, S. Marshall 2/8, N. Holder 2/9) lost to Combermere School U/17 194 [29.5 overs] (S Marshall 53, D Niles 45, S. Braithwaite 37, L. Roughley 5/41, J. Camp 2/16, C. Rose 3 catches) by 62 runs With the word getting around of our strong performances we were told to expect a much stronger opposition in today’s game. The next opposition being Combermere School U17 it was well known that this would be our toughest match yet. In an unusual manner for our boys, we didn’t start off well with the ball however found a way to bring it back dramatically towards the middle. Lachlan Roughley’s impressive spell of 5/41 changed the game with 3 excellent catches from Charlie Rose on the . Jayden Camp also bowled very well with 2/16 and brought the total back to an achievable 194 runs. With the bat, wickets consistently fell from the start, however innings from Jarod Baxter (18) and Jordan Fullagar (16) provided the team with a spine to build off. Towards the end of the innings Joe Hiley (19) and Jayden Camp (28) provided cameos that gave us hope and kept the match within reach until the end. 12

Match 6 (6 July 2017) – at 3Ws Oval, Cave Hill campus, University of the West Indies, Barbados Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 79 [35.2 overs] (C. Davenport 11, L. Shaw 10, J. Camp 10, R. Headley 4/14) lost to Barbados U/17 National Team 7/275 [45 overs] (N. Reifer 85, Z. Clark 37, M. Forde 32, T. Gibson 29no, J. Camp 3/46, J. Hiley 3/47) by 197 runs Moving into a new game and again looking improve, we also knew that the match would be a tough one against the Barbados U17 National team. A great experience for all of the boys playing an older national team on a first class ground. Losing the toss, we were sent in to bowl first and up against a strong batting line-up. The opposition were strong throughout their innings despite the fight our boys put up with the ball and in the field. The two bowlers who looked the part on the day were Jayden Camp (3/46) and Joe Hiley (3/47). By consistently putting the ball in good areas they were able to build pressure and provide some breakthrough wickets. The opposition made their way to an imposing 7/275. Only a few of our batsmen managing to hang in against their quick bowlers, only Cooper Davenport (11), Jayden Camp (10) and Lachlan Shaw (10) were able to reach double figures.

Match 7 (7 July 2017) – at Franklyn Stephenson Academy, Cockade House, St Thomas, Barbados Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 8/233 [40 overs] (C. Rose 64no, W. Coffey 54no [122 run unbroken 9th wicket partnership], J. Camp 36, J. Fullagar 26, M. Simmons 3/25, N. Collymore 2/21) def. Barbados Cricket Association U/15 Select XI 201 [38.2 overs] (J. St Hill 60, T. O’Neal 45no, J. Hiley 2/12, C. Davenport 2/38, W. Coffey 2/41) by 32 runs Looking for a fresh start after back-to-back loses, we were also now nearing the end of our time in Barbados. Wanting to do well in every game remaining, we were now up against the Barbados Cricket Association U/15 Select XI who were a good young side. Our batting was very strong with people throughout the order managing to build partnerships and post a few solid scores. Jayden Camp (36) and Jordan Fullagar (26) were strong early in the innings, setting a good platform and later allowing for the development of the 9th wicket partnership between Charlie Rose (64 not out) and Will Coffey (54 not out) to reach an unbroken 122 runs. This match came right down to the wire but thanks to tight bowling and good throughout, the boys were able to find a way over the line. Three bowlers stood up and did particularly well including Joe Hiley (2-12), Will Coffey (2-41) and Cooper Davenport (2-38).

Match 8 (8 July 2017) – at Franklyn Stephenson Academy, Cockade House, St Thomas, Barbados Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 1/343 [38 overs] (L. Shaw 100 ret., L. Fisher 100 ret. [217 run unbroken 1st wicket partnership], C. Miller 65no, J. Baxter 39no [107 run unbroken 2nd wicket partnership]) def. Franklyn Stephenson Academy 147 [35.5 overs] (J. Layne 50no, J. Fullagar 3/28, J. Baxter 2/22) by 196 runs With a very successful tour nearing its end, the boys wanted to finish on a positive note by making the final game in Barbados a memorable one. Against a solid young group of cricketers from the Franklyn Stephenson Academy, we won the toss and decided to bat first. We set the tone from the beginning and posted a 217 run unbroken 1st wicket partnership, with Lachlan Shaw (100 retired) and Lachlan Fisher (100 retired) both scoring centuries. Corey Miller (65no) and Jarod Baxter (39no) also posted impressive scores taking the touring to an imposing 1/343 off 38 overs. The bowling was again very impressive while also being a lot tighter than other days. With many bowlers unlucky not to get the wickets they deserved, Jordan Fullagar (3/28) which would be his most talked about wicket, knocking over Franklyn Stevenson himself and Jarod Baxter (2/22) were the stand out bowlers. Oscar Kirk also entertained by impressively knocking over his older brother Henry, who was invited to play for the home team, followed by decent send-off as he walked off. Varun Ravindran also bowled very well in his short spell and unlucky not to get the wickets he deserved. A complete performance by the Coaches’ Association / NDCC U/15 team in defeating the Franklyn Stephenson Academy in what was a great way to finish off the cricket on tour. What an absolutely fantastic tour this has been. Fourteen players were lucky enough to not only experience great cricket in unfamiliar territory and climates, but to share this journey with who was soon to become lifelong friends, is something that none of us will forget. A very special thank you goes to Bruce Wood for putting together this amazing opportunity for us all and umpiring the 8 matches in Barbados in very warm conditions. The tour ran like clockwork and when we were all enjoying ourselves, Bruce was still thinking about the next thing that needed to be organised. Thanks also to the coaches, Rod Hokin and Josh Miller, for the pre-tour training sessions, the individual planning and goal setting, the match days, the constant mentoring and for the overall fun we all had together. Our amazing parents can’t be thanked enough. Thank you – the Barbados 2017 Tour will be hard to top. 13

Captain’s Report – Joe Hiley (Off the field)

And so began the journey of a lifetime, little did we know at the time that this trip would stand out above the rest. One by one, we gathered at the airport Coffee Club having our last drinks on home soil, the bags had been sent through and the flight tickets had been printed. We were ready to go. The excitement could be seen on everyone’s face as we took our first step onto the plane, we took our seats and buckled up for one of the longest flights we had ever been on. The plane trip was rough for some, gentle for others, myself and Lachlan Fisher took turns on sleeping in the footrest as it felt somewhat like a bed at home. We arrived in Los Angeles after a long flight and ventured to the famous Universal Studios. Our team had a ball going on every single ride we could – the boys really bonded well that day. However, the long flight had crept up on a few of us as we left Universal Studios with our eyes shut on the bus. We got back and had a sleep in a proper bed at our hotel. Waking up at 4.00am wasn’t the greatest feeling, over 2 ½ hours in the airport then followed, but it was worth it in the end as we boarded our next flight from LA to Miami. We landed in Miami with a 4-hour stop-over scheduled before we took off for the last time. All the boys sat on the edge of their seats, eager to get onto the plane and fly to Barbados, the centre of cricket in the West Indies. We hopped on our final flight, ready for the fun to begin. Here we are, Barbados. We grabbed all of our things in a hurry before stepping into the warmth outside. All the boys were talking about the excitement that builds, this energy continues until we take our bus back to the Butterfly Beach Hotel. Everyone (including Rod & Josh) dash to their rooms after a small team talk about cabin groups. We unpack and get straight into our swimming gear. This was where the true holiday began. We found a small beach next to the Hotel, everyone squeezed through the gate and ran for the crystal-clear water that was before us. It was heaven! The water was as warm as a bath, perfectly clear and was just brilliant to be in. We splashed around for hours and hours, enjoying every moment we could before getting dressed and doing a light training session. We had our dinner and went to our rooms, eager for our first game. The team woke up in Paradise! We gathered at breakfast which was a buffet filled with delicious food, we had our team talk, packed and left for our first game. We had a win and celebrated on the bus with music, cheering and of course the dreaded fines meeting. We got back and had a warm down and a stretch in the pool before heading back up to our rooms to get dressed, ready for dinner. After an amazing meal with the whole team, everyone got back to the hotel and went to bed, stunned by what an experience we had on the first day. Many of the boys woke up earlier that next morning, wanting to swim in the warm beaches at 6.00am before breakfast and our second match on tour against the Graydon Sealy Secondary School at Desmond Haynes Oval. Kensington Oval was our next stop that evening as we went to watch the local T20 final, huge hits and great catches were seen. Lachlan, Rod and myself were taken upstairs for an interview on live TV, we talked about the tour and where we are from, before wrapping things up with an excellent speech from Rocket that covered all bases. We headed home after a day filled to the brim with fun and pleasant surprise at the end. The day that followed was a favourite of many on this tour, the catamaran day! We got to the site and boarded the JAMMIN Boat that took us away into the sea, we went snorkelling and saw amazing ship wrecks and even a huge turtle that swam beneath our feet. This continued before we got called back onto the boats, heading off to another location. The team talked and bonded as we dropped the anchor and went for another swim again, this time with a $10 ride that sent us flying on an inflatable that was dragged behind a speed boat. A smashing lunch was provided before party hour. The parents and kids gathered inside, we watched our parents lean back to have shots poured into their mouths, the music was pumping and the crowd was dancing, before we had a competition with a rival catamaran. The day came to an end when we hopped off and headed home, many of us a little sunburnt. We headed up to a beach where we had dinner as well. 14

COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

After our final game in Barbados against the Franklyn Stevenson Academy, we went back to our hotel and unpacked our bags before saying goodbye to our amazing bus driver, Larry. The boys pulled $10 US each together as a leaving present of $140 dollars. We said our final goodbyes, headed to our rooms and began to pack up. After a final swim and a final team dinner, we went to bed for the last time in Barbados. This day was a rough one for the boys, it started at 4:30am before being delayed even further at the airport, most of the boys were more quiet than usual, realising that their time in Barbados had come to an end. The lads jumped on the plane for Miami, seeing the last of Barbados through the small glass window on the plane. When we landed in Miami, we had a short stop-over, giving us time to eat and talk about the best moments of our trip. When we arrived in Los Angeles after the next flight, the boys settled down and grabbed their gear before hopping onto a bus that took us to our hotel room, where we found out the sad news that the game the following day against the Southern California Cricket Association had been cancelled was announced, the boys looked upset, but eager to explore America. We put our stuff in our rooms before a swim and a meal, followed by sleep. The boys woke next morning to the news that we were touring the LA Angels Baseball Stadium at Anaheim; this was an amazing day as we walked around each room and learnt a little about baseball as well. The boys loved it and really got stuck in when the guide told us about Mike Trout and his record as one of the best baseball players of all time. After a quick trip to the gift shop, the boys were taken to a shopping outlet to spend more of our parents’ money! We picked up expensive clothing for cheap amounts of money, along with other things as well. After the shopping spree, we were taken on a small drive around LA as we headed back home, after a great meal and a chat with the team, we went to bed. “DISNEYLAND” - the boys could not wait to crash through the front gates. We went on rides as an entire team before breaking into groups, my group discovered the fast pass secret and got onto every single ride without waiting more than 10 minutes. We had a cracker of a day as it kept going. More rides, more games and more fun as we grouped together to go and watch the light show. The light show was astounding, lasting more than 20 minutes with iconic movies thrown through it. Truly a spectacular site. After an immense day at Disneyland, the team and parents gathered at an arranged dinner. We shared laughs, had fun, handed out awards, gave speeches and took our final team photo.

Our final day on the tour took us to the Griffith Observatory in the Hollywood hills for a couple of hours; the view was amazing. Next stop was the Hollywood “Walk of Fame” with the stars engraved into the walkway. We had a quick look at Mann’s Chinese Theatre with the quotes from the famous stars, along with their handprints. When we departed for Santa Monica Pier, the boys’ energy had lifted with excitement and adrenaline. We walked around the iconic pier and ventured down to the super long beach itself. A quick swim and some beach cricket had us satisfied, before we enjoyed a Thai meal for dinner.

We boarded the bus for LAX and the boys talked about the tour, discussing all the highlights. We arrived at the airport and did the usual things, as we waited to be taken back to Australia. The boys were quiet, we all knew what the other was thinking. Everyone was going to miss this tour, the friendships we built and the memories we had made would never be forgotten. This was a trip I will never forget. Special thanks to our tour officials, Rod, Josh & Bruce, plus all the parents for making this memorable opportunity possible. The Coaches’ Association and Northern District CC have a winning formula with these amazing U/15 cricket tours. 15

ROD HOKIN (HEAD COACH) – ASSESSMENT OF PLAYERS

NO. PLAYER BRIEF COMMENTS

Had a fantastic tour and was outstanding both on and off the field. Led from the front in terms of Lachlan batting being our leading run scorer with 248 runs at an average of 41. His final innings on tour was 1 Shaw superb as he scored 100 retired off 80 balls. Behind the stumps he had an excellent tour as keeper (Co-Captain) and as a Captain he led superbly by setting an outstanding example for the rest of the team both through his performances but also his off-field maturity. Was our leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets at an average of 10 and continued to show why he is Joe Hiley one of the leading spinners in his age group. He showed glimpses of his batting potential and with 2 this hit the biggest six on tour. He captained the team well with positive intent and innovative field (Co-Captain) placements. Off the field he shone with his culinary skills and his poached eggs were without doubt something to savor. Jarod showed excellent all-round skills during the tour. With the bat, his 39 not out off 28 balls in our Jarod last game showed his ability to rotate the strike and score quickly, adapting to the conditions of the 3 Baxter game. With the ball, he bowled consistent lines and lengths and was rewarded with 6 wickets at an average of 14. He also thoroughly enjoyed the experience off the field on tour as well. Jayden had an outstanding tour and was rewarded with being named our best all-rounder. His Jayden 7 wickets at an average of 10 showed the potential he has as an off-spin bowler, with 3 wickets 4 Camp against the National Under 17 team. With his batting Jayden discovered his power game, scoring an excellent 203 runs at an average of 51. Off the field, Jayden showed himself to be an exceptional team person. A player who just loves cricket and always gave 100% on the field. Will was named our best fielder Will and on top of this played 2 exceptional innings with 54 not out against the Franklin Stephenson 5 Coffey Academy and 48 against the Desmond Haynes Academy. His leg-spin bowling also showed great potential. However, despite his excellent all-round performances, Will was the only player not to make it to Mars during the trip (‘in-joke’ from the tour). An outstanding young man who showed exceptional maturity both on and off the field. Batting at Cooper No. 3, his innings against the National Barbados Under 17 team was easily the most courageous 6 Davenport display on tour. Against some of the best fast bowlers in the country, his 58 balls (89 minutes) innings held our team together. His bowling also shows plenty of potential and his consistent off-spin saw him take 3 for 1 in 4 overs in our match against the Desmond Haynes Academy. It was fantastic to watch Lachie score a in our last match on tour. He is a genuine Lachlan all-rounder and showed his technical and power hitting ability with 100 off 73 balls. He was also the 7 Fisher leader of our pace bowling attack and his opening spell against the Barbados Under 17 team was outstanding to watch. In the field, Lachie also excelled and is a player to watch. It was excellent to watch Jordan’s all-round ability on this tour. Returning from injury, his pace Jordan bowling shows significant potential and twice on tour he picked up 3 wickets in an innings. With the 8 Fullagar bat, Jordan grew in confidence as the tour progressed and in his last innings he played positively and showed he has an excellent array of strokes. Aidan is an outstanding young man who was a pleasure to have on tour. Always willing to help out Aidan his fellow tourists on and off the field, his attitude was exceptional. He was the equal third-highest 9 Jackson wicket-taker on tour (7) and he is also a batsman with excellent potential. He is a fluent speaker of Alabii and taught many of the boys the language on tour as well. Oscar is a technically correct top-order batsman and although he did not get many runs, he showed he has the potential to perform at this level. With the ball, he bowled some excellent spells 10 Oscar Kirk highlighted by his 3 overs in the last game where he bowled superbly and managed to knock over the middle stump of his older brother Henry, who was playing for the opposition team. As a top-order batter, Corey developed significantly on tour and his two 50s that came at quicker than a run a ball showed that he has the ability to score quickly when required. Corey also has Corey 11 significant potential as a pace bowler and when needed on tour also wicket-kept well. He took some Miller outstanding catches on tour both on the field and at the beach. A quiet player off the field, Corey often snuck under the radar of the fines master. Varun was a pleasure to have on tour and on a number of occasions, he showed his ability as a Varun pace bowler with some excellent spells. He bowls at good pace and can swing the ball and was 12 Ravindran unlucky not to get more wickets. His batting also showed potential and hopefully he goes on to have a successful all-round season this year. Left-handed batsman Charlie had an excellent tour, scoring three half-centuries. His last innings of Charlie 62 from 42 balls rescued the team after we lost our first 8 wickets for just over 100. His ability to 13 Rose adapt to different conditions shows how Charlie is a top order batter with a big future. He also bowled well when given the opportunity and his out-field catching was superb. Lachlan was the pick of our spinners on tour. He constantly was impressive in terms of the control Lachlan and variation with his leg-spin. His 5 wicket haul against the strongest Under 17 School in the 14 Roughley country (Combermere) showed his temperament under pressure. He also is an accomplished top-order batsman who will hopefully have a big season this year.

COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

DR SIMON COFFEY – PARENTS’ REPORT ON THE WEST INDIES / USA TOUR It was with great anticipation that 37 players, coaches and supporters gathered around 0600 at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport on the 26th June. Apart from the excitement of a cricket tour and the escape of a cold winter, we were heading with our sons, to one of the most exotic of cricketing destinations, Barbados. A challenging itinerary had been planned. After the flight from Sydney to LA, the whole group headed off to Universal Studios to enjoy the rides and attractions. Let’s just say that the boys managed the day much better than the parents, of course, with the exception of Judy Shaw and the Kirks, who soldiered on till stumps. A great effort. Matt was most flattered to be asked for his identification until he was told that ALL patrons asking for a drink must show ID. Company policy. A brief overnight stay at the airport hotel and we were on our way to Barbados and our accommodation the following day. Our jetlag was easily countered by our excitement as we settled into the Butterfly Beach Hotel near Oistins, a small town made world famous by The Friday Fish Fry. Waking to damp skies our enthusiasm was not dented as we took a day to rest up and recharge for the coming games. The cricketing experience over the following 12 days was great. Despite some challenges in obtaining opposition of similar standard, the boys always applied themselves to the task at hand. Rod and Josh were key in ensuring that each player developed their cricket. The group dynamic was complimented by the post-game recovery sessions in the pool. The supporters’ recovery sessions were structured a little differently, usually starting in the Caribbean Sea for a swim, followed soon after by a few Banks in the Bar, before deciding upon a dinner venue. A highlight of the tour was a group supporter’s dinner for Andy, celebrating his 50th birthday. Later in the trip, Wendy, Cassandra, as well as Jarod all celebrated birthdays. There was opportunity to explore the locale, and we visited Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay as well as the variety of cricket grounds. A day of catamaran sailing with snorkeling and swimming on “Jammin” became a social highpoint for the tour. Little did we realise, until aboard, that the bar was open, free and accompanied by some real reggae music. Ravi was overwhelmed! The sight of BGW taking shots at the bar is not one any of the touring party will forget soon. Anchored off $50m homes, the whole group was able to let their hair down and remind themselves that they were indeed in Paradise. Our journey onto LA found disappointment that the locals pulled out a day before, without actually letting us know till the last minute. Nevertheless, we found alternative activities including a very interesting tour to LA Angels Baseball Stadium. A special note of thanks should go to Bruce Wood. His work began two years ago as the successful Sri Lankan tour came to an end. Many hours have been spent planning the challenging tour. Keeping us well informed and up to date before and throughout the tour, he continued the sometimes difficult job of liaison between travel agent, opposition teams and the touring party. He managed to umpire all of our games, mostly with the invaluable assistance of ‘Indian’ who as a lifelong cricketer, gave us a special insight into Bajan cricket. I am sure Bruce will never forget the brief impromptu conversation with Desmond Haynes that Indian arranged. Even with a foot injury sustained in the first recovery session with the boys, Bruce kept up the hard work until we were all safely home. The supporters were treated to some very enjoyable days of cricket, great evenings of socializing and strengthening of new and older friendships. If the success of the tour is measured only on that matrix, then it exceeded expectations.

BRUCE WOOD UMPIRING IN WEST INDIES – ARTICLE FOR NSWCUSA IN BLACK & WHITE NEWSLETTER

Below is a report on my recent experience umpiring junior cricket matches in Barbados.

I am President of the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai & Hills District Cricket Coaches' Association Inc. (HKHDCCA), Sydney's largest not-for-profit junior cricket coaching organisation. As well as conducting numerous coaching programs and school holiday cricket clinics each year, the Coaches' Association takes an U/15 representative team on an overseas cricket tour every two years, in partnership with Northern District CC. In 2015, we took an U/15 team to Sri Lanka and played on Test and First Class ovals (refer: bit.ly/SL-Report-2015). I was Manager of that touring team and umpired all the matches with a local umpire.

The Coaches' Association / NDCC embarked on an U/15 cricket tour to the West Indies, via USA, from 26 June to 14 July 2017, playing 8 matches in Barbados. My roles on this tour were again Tour Manager and Umpire. We took 14 players, 3 coaches / officials, and 20 parents / supporters (total 37 people). The opposition teams were mainly strong U/15 school sides or cricket academy teams coached by former West Indian Test players.

I enjoyed the company of a regular umpiring partner for 6 of the 8 matches in Barbados, Anthony Farrell (nick-name 'Indian') – see photo at right. Anthony is an excellent umpire and we quickly developed a very good partnership, both on and off the field. 'Indian' is a former First Class player who used to open the batting with Desmond Haynes at Empire CC. He has umpired at First Class level in the West Indies and has a very good understanding of the game and rapport with the players. After winning our first 4 matches on tour quite easily, our officials were introduced to Steven Leslie, Director of Cricket, Barbados Cricket Association, at the BCA Sagicor General Twenty20 Championship Final (see photo at left) between the University of the West Indies (UWI) and St. Catherine at Kensington Oval (refer to match report: bit.ly/BCA-T20_30-6-17). I closely observed the officiating umpires in this domestic T20 Final, Kevin Sisnett and Jonathan Blades, and was impressed with their professionalism.

The introduction with the 'boss' of Barbados Cricket, Mr Leslie, led to the highlight of our U/15 tour, as we were invited to play a 50 over match against the Barbados National U/17 men's team at the 3Ws Oval, the newest First Class venue in Barbados. The 3Ws Oval, located on the grounds of the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies, is named in memory of three great Barbados and West Indies cricketers – Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Clyde Walcott and Sir Everton Weekes. This high-level match was played under international playing conditions with the fielding restriction circle, PowerPlays, leg-side Wides, etc. The Barbados National U/17 team was about to travel to Trinidad for the annual West Indies U/17 championships and deemed our U/15 rep. team from Sydney as worthwhile competition.

COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

As it turned out, the Sydney touring team was well beaten, however our young boys showed courage and commitment to bat for 35 overs against tall, strong fast bowlers and high standard spinners. Our lads also bowled well and took 7 wickets. Their captain, Nico Reifer (see photos of him batting as non-striker – above), a member of the Barbados U/19 team and the West Indies U/17 squad, opened the batting and put on a masterclass, scoring 85 with superb stroke play and shot selection. We were advised that several players in this Barbados National U/17 team are destined to play for the West Indies in the future years.

Our team was also invited by Richard Clarke, Barbados National U/15 (Boys) Coach, and Manager of the Barbados National Women's team, to play a match against the Barbados National (open) Women's team, however Mr Leslie considered that based on our impressive performances on tour, our U/15 team would be too strong for their Women's side, which was weakened by having five Barbados players in England representing the West Indies at the ICC Women's World Cup. The umpires in the West Indies that I observed are not as well versed in some of the protocols that we follow in Sydney Premier Cricket, eg. confirming the number of balls left in the over after each sundry, and indicating from the striker's end if the ball came off the bat / gloves, or a leg-bye. I suggested these practices which they followed for a while, before reverting to just the '2 to go' signal after 4 legitimate deliveries. However, their communication with the players, game management, decision-making and judgment are all excellent. Barbados is a beautiful country surrounded by clean beaches. All the seaside hotels and resorts are built right on the beaches, so our players swam in the ocean before and after each match. The local people are laid-back and friendly, and they love to talk about and watch cricket matches. Another interesting observation on tour was the unusual 'turf' pitch preparation in school and club ovals without a full-time curator. Our team played two matches at Desmond Haynes Oval in Black Rock, Barbados. On both occasions, there had been some overnight rain and surprisingly the covers hadn't been used. When we arrived we found a wet, muddy pitch with no grass on it whatsoever. If we encountered similar conditions in Sydney on match-day, there would be no chance of any play, however the curator advised that he just needed 1.5 hours to prepare a good batting pitch. We were a bit sceptical that he could get the pitch ready by 12pm mid-day, however he used his ride-on lawn-mower and cut an area

of the outfield to gather lots of grass-cuttings. He then spread the grass all over the muddy pitch and got out the heavy roller (see photo above). He drove up and down the pitch for about 30 minutes until it had a firm, shiny surface (see coin-toss photo at left). 41

COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

The curator advised that the hot Barbados sun will bake the surface and in half an hour, it will be a good batting pitch with a bit in it for the bowlers. The curator painted the creases and we won the toss and batted first, scoring 5/202 from 35 overs against good quality bowlers. It was amazing to see such a quick transformation from an unplayable surface to a good batting pitch in 1.5 hours. The curator advised that another advantage of this form of pitch preparation is that the same strip can be used day after day with no deterioration of the surface. Barbados is a small island and cricket is their national sport, so most pitches are used 5 – 6 times per week during the season. The Sydney U/15 touring team played two matches at the Franklyn Stephenson (Junior Cricket) Academy at Cockade House, Bennetts, Saint Thomas, Barbados, a small, picturesque ground, with turf nets and other facilities. The local teams included many talented youngsters of varying ages, plus their coach, Franklyn Stephenson, a former West Indies player who batted, bowled and wicket-kept against our team (he is the tall man in whites in the photo at right).

We were also privileged to play a match at Empire Cricket Club in Bank Hall; Bridgetown, Barbados, which was formed in 1914. This famous club has produced many West Indian Test cricketers, including Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Everton Weekes, Sir , Charlie Griffith, Seymour Nurse, , Carlisle Best and Roland Holder. Empire CC is also the home club of my umpiring colleague, Anthony Farrell, who organised our match at this special venue (see photo – left).

For the record, our U/15 representative team from Sydney (bit.ly/WI-Program-2017) performed very well, winning 6 from 8 matches, losing only to the Barbados National U/17 team, and the Combermere School U/17 team, the Barbados schools champions. Combermere School has a proud history in cricket and has produced 4 West Indies Test Captains. Our best players on tour were the two co-captains, Lachlan Shaw (248 runs @ 35.4, HS 100no; 4 w-k catches; 4 stumpings; 5 run outs), and Joe Hiley, 12 wickets @ 10.25, BB 5/16, with his left-arm spinners. Shaw was the leading wicket-keeper in the AW Green Shield competition in 2016-17 with 19 dismissals for premiers Sydney CC, and Hiley took a total of 43 wickets @ 13.6 for Northern District CC in 2016-17 in 4th Grade, 5th Grade and the AW Green Shield competition. One of the other stars on tour was all-rounder, Jayden Camp from NDCC, who scored 203 runs @ 50.8 and took 7 wickets @ 9.7 with his off-spinners, including 3/46 against the Barbados National U/17 team.

COACHES’ ASSOCIATION / NORTHERN DISTRICT CC U/15 TOUR – WEST INDIES & USA – 2017 – REPORT

Our team enjoyed a visit to the Cricket Legends of Barbados Museum at Herbert House, Fontabelle, St Michael, not far from Kensington Oval. The museum is a tribute to the 42 Barbadian / West Indian Cricketers, including Sir , , Sir Everton Weekes, Rev (see below), Charlie Griffith, Desmond Haynes, Seymour Nurse and . The museum building contains two stories of cricket memorabilia commemorating Barbados’ Cricket History, and rivals the SCG museum with its priceless, unique exhibits on display.

I was fortunate to be presented with an official Barbados Cricket Umpires' Association (BCUA) umpires field shirt and a spare ICC 2016 World Cup Qualifier match shirt (see photos below).

Overall, it was a wonderful experience to umpire 8 matches in Barbados and enjoy the company of the local umpires, who love the game and made me feel very welcome. They are proud of the legacy that Barbados' former famous players have played in West Indian Test Cricket history. There is a common transition of retiring players to join the Barbados Cricket Umpires' Association and this helps to facilitate effective communication between the umpires and the players, as they understand the game and how it is played under pressure. I declined payment for my umpiring in Barbados to assist the touring team’s budget. I look at each umpiring experience as a learning opportunity and gleaned a few small tips from my colleagues in Barbados, which was much appreciated. This cricket trip to the Caribbean was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I’ll never forget. Planning is already underway for our next U/15 overseas cricket tour to India in 2019.

We have experienced significant growth since our inception in 2010 and aim to continue to expand our subsidised (or free) coaching programs to a wider cross-section of the community, many of whom have encountered barriers or lack of opportunities to participate in cricket, including disadvantaged groups, children from non-English speaking communities, and children with special needs. The successful implementation of these challenging initiatives should assist in facilitating sporting, cultural and social inclusion for these communities, while also promoting healthy, active lifestyles and increasing the participation rate in cricket in NSW. Responsibilities include:  raising the profile of coaching and giving coaches a collective ‘voice’ within the Association;  promoting the objective that all club and representative coaches attain the Cricket Australia Community (Level 1) accreditation as a minimum (preferably Level 2 for Representative Shield coaches);  conducting an annual Community (Level 1) accredited coaching course for HK&HDCA and NDCC members;  organising cricket clinics at Waitara, Hornsby, West Pennant Hills, Normanhurst and Dundas in partnership with Northern District CC during the September / October and January school holidays for players aged 6 – 14;  conducting an annual off-season Specialist Coaching Program pitched at rep. standard players aged 11 – 15;  implementing an annual off-season development coaching program for U/10 – U/11 players at Hornsby over 6 Sundays during the Winter months, designed to fast-track their transition from soft to hard ball cricket;  representing the Coaches’ Association on all cricket coaching matters at the HK&HDCA Council and Executive Meetings (the HKHDCCA President is the delegate);  providing active HKHDCCA members with professional coaching opportunities at our Junior Cricket Clinics; off-season development programs; and other programs where HKHDCCA provides coaching services;  co-ordinating the annual Ross Turner Cup (U/15) and Glenn Hourigan Cup (U/13) annual ‘showcase’ intra-Association representative fixtures, including the preliminary GHC T20 matches;  identifying potential outstanding young coaches and providing GHC coaching roles and other opportunities;  providing a mentor service to coaches as required, especially new or young coaches seeking guidance;  enhancing the development of accredited coaches and facilitating a future pathway for club and rep. coaches;  recognising excellence in club and representative coaching through our HKHDCCA Coach of Year award (Bruce Wood Cup);  administering a scholarship scheme designed to provide financial assistance to a limited number of candidates nominated to attend a Cricket NSW accredited coaching course (Level 1, 2 or 3);  assisting the HK&HDCA Rep. Secretary with coaching matters relating to the representative program, including the provision of qualified coaches to rep. teams as required, and the end-of-season appraisal;  increasing the participation of girls in cricket, in consultation with the HK&HDCA Girls Cricket Co-ordinator, through targeted coaching programs and liaison with schools and clubs, and local junior Super 8 programs;  seeking Corporate Sponsorship and/or Grant opportunities to provide additional funding to expand and further subsidise our coaching programs, and also purchase additional equipment as required;  arranging a HKHDCCA / NDCC overseas rep. cricket tour (U/15 age group) every couple of years from 2015;  enabling the Association to maintain a record of all Level 1 and 2 accredited coaches;  ensuring that all HKHDCCA coaches aged 18 and over have a current Working with Children Check clearance;  one-on-one (or small groups) private coaching on request, depending on the availability of suitable coaches;  conducting free Beginners sessions teaching cricket fundamentals to 'first time' players aged U/8 or older;  assisting clubs by running some coaching sessions and demonstrating coaching drills to new club coaches;  holding two free annual clinics each year for Blowfly cricketers (children with special needs) in January and September, plus ad-hoc coaching on Saturdays, depending on the availability of coaches;  providing cricket coaching for community groups from non-English speaking backgrounds who have encountered barriers or lack of opportunities to participate in cricket in Sydney.  providing cricket coaching for community groups from non-English speaking backgrounds who have encountered barriers or lack of opportunities to participate in cricket in Sydney. 44

NSW Blues Matador Cup Premiers Ross Turner presenting Clayton Waters Dan Hughes, Harry Conway, Chris Green, Nathan Lyon Clubman of the Year One of the most successful seasons the Club has ever had …  ND’s Test player Nathan Lyon did well in India and cemented his name as Australia’s greatest off-spinner  Sheffield Shield players: Daniel Hughes & Harry Conway both had good seasons. Dan must be in the headlights now of the Australian selectors  BBL players: Sixers – Haddin & Hughes. Thunder – Chris Green. Renegades – Andrew Harriott  1st in Club Championship  1ST Grade T20 Premiers  3rd Grade Premiers  2nd , 3rd , 4th and 5th Grades making the finals rounds. 2nd Grade – Grand Finalists.  AW Green Shield Minor Premiers and Grand Finalists  Andrew Harriott and Henry Hunt playing Futures XI  Women’s Brewer Shield Premiers. 1st Grade Grand Finalists  Lauren Smith represented in the Australian Shooting Stars This hugely successful season can be summed up by a catch phrase introduced by our Club Captain, Clayton Waters … #ALLIN. It was an “all in” effort from everyone involved with the club. This includes Bruce Wood, who works tirelessly in producing our joint ventures. The Coaches’ Association and NDs continue to do great things together! This year the ‘partnership’ is sending an U/15 representative team to the West Indies and USA! Thanks to Bruce Wood, Rod Hokin & Josh Miller for their enormous commitment to providing great cricket experiences for local juniors, from Coaching Clinics to overseas tours, to playing Grade for NDs. It’s a great pathway! Another great achievement during the season was the Big Blue Gum Lunch, honouring all ND players who fought in past wars and recognising all 1st grade players in chronological order since the club began. It was a true “Remembrance Day” for the Club. I say it every year … “We hope that every local junior who aspires to play grade cricket does so at their local grade club. We do not promise the world to young players, but we can promise 4 things … 1. The best coaching structure in the SCA. 2. Great facilities. 3. A fair selection policy (ie. rewards for performances). 4. That you will have a good time! Your playing days at NDs will be good fun mixed with hard work. As Mark Taylor says, “if you are not having fun, then it becomes a chore and that only ends one way!” NDs has a very strong and rich history. We are extremely active in programs that benefit players, members and the community, for example:  The joint school holiday Coaching Clinics  Leadership Program  Junior Development Winter Program  ND Schools Cup  Our relationship with Special Olympics  Our support of the Trish Langsford Foundation and “Kids with Cancer”

Let’s do it all again together!
