Age-Friendly Community

On behalf of the Government of Canada and as the Member of Parliament for Fredericton, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Age-Friendly Community Advisory Committee and Deputy Mayor Eric Megarity for their work to improve the quality of life of seniors living in the Fredericton area. New Brunswick is undoubtedly facing an aging population, and now is the time to prepare. I am proud that our Government recognizes the evolving needs of senior citizens and supports this Committee’s work to meet the demographic changes our communities are facing. This publication is a step-forward to ensure that you have the access to all programs and services available in our area. I encourage you all to take full advantage of the programs offered and to share your experience and skills with the rest of the Fredericton community. 5 As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office if you have any concerns or advice which will help further develop Fredericton as an age- friendly community. Sincerely,

Hon. , P.C. Member of Parliament for Fredericton February 2nd, 2015

Fire Safety Tips for Older Adults Provincial Fire Marshal’s Office – 506-453-2004 Provided by the Office of the Fire Marshal

1 Never smoke in bed. You might accidentally set fire to bedclothes, newspapers and other materials. If you must smoke in your home, soak ashes in water before discarding them. 2 Never run electrical cords under a carpet or rug, and avoid using extension cords with space heaters or electric blankets. 3 Before using portable space heaters and ensure that you have at least three feet of clearance between the heater and combustibles, make sure it is plugged into an independent outlet, and never leave heaters unattended (unplug when you leave the house or go to bed). 4 Do not use a dishtowel as a potholder. They will catch fire if they come in contact with a hot burner. 5 Loose clothing is a serious burn hazard – roll up your sleeves and ensure that other pieces of clothing are kept well away from hot stovetop elements. 16 6 Install a working smoke alarm on every floor in your home and outside your sleeping area. Make sure that it is loud enough to wake you if you are asleep! Ask a friend or relative to test your smoke alarm while you are asleep. If it can’t wake you – it can’t save you! 7 Install a working Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector in your home as this is your first defense against this colorless, odorless, toxic flammable gas formed by incomplete burning of natural gas and any other material containing carbon such as gasoline, kerosene, oil propane or wood. 8 Test the battery in your smoke alarms and CO detectors once a month. This is done by either pushing the test button on the alarm, or by directing smoke into the alarm. 9 Never disconnect your smoke alarms or CO detectors for any reason. 10 Plan and practise an escape plan in case of fire. It will reduce panic and confusion in an emergency – and may save your life! 11 Make sure you can unlock all doors and open all windows.
