A Moose on the Loose in Kenosha? News release January 20, 2008 Contact: Lee Colony 262.564.2512 262.359.0798 (cell) A moose on the loose in Kenosha? WGTD Radio Theater to produce new Rocky and Bullwinkle adventure KENOSHA – WGTD Radio Theater will open its fourth season with an original episode of the highly popular cartoon series, “Rocky and Bullwinkle” 11:15 a.m. January 26. The production of “Moose and Squirrel Roam Kenosha: Or … The New Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends” will be aired from Gateway Technical College’s Center for Bioscience & Information Technology, 3520-30th Avenue. The WGTD production will also get a boost from the originator of the cartoon. Original music and cartoon sound effects are all from Jay Ward’s audio vault from “Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle.” Ward in 1959 first co-produced the “Rocky and Friends” show, which would generate 163 half-hour shows over its run. Steven Brown and Michael Ullstrup, both of Salem, penned this original episode. “Moose and Squirrel – rather, Rocky and Bullwinkle – have always been one of my favorite TV series of all time,” says Brown. “A number of years ago, I had a chance to chat, over a cup of coffee, with Mrs. Jay Ward about how her husband (Jay) got involved with Rocky. All I remember is that Mrs. Ward kept on talking about Frostbite Falls, Minn. “In any case, we’ll feature most of the famous characters from this historically important television series, replete with Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale.” Terry Lawler, Kenosha, will play Boris Badenov and Victoria Paura-Ide, Somers, will play Natasha Fatale. The role of Bullwinkle J. Moose is played by Pleasant Prairie’s own Gary Stamm, while Victoria DuMez will rock the house in the role of Rocket J. Squirrel. Also appearing in the radio cartoon production will be Mr. Peabody, played by Cameron Spencer of Kenosha, and Sherman, played by young Tyler Farrell of Bristol. This cartoon series was about a time-traveling dog and his pet boy, Sherman. Using Peabody's “Wayback Machine,” the pair will take a trip back into time to hear the real story about how young George Washington learned how to love apple pies and not cherry trees. The third feature during this 45-minute live radio cartoon program is “Dudley Do-Right,” played by Gary Stamm, with help from Nell, played by Susanne Wilczek of Brighton. Dudley Do-Right wouldn’t be complete without that horrible “Snidely Whiplash,” played by Mark Frazer, of Somers. Lawler is the senior director for this program, and DuMez makes her 91.1 Players directorial debut as she will direct one of the three segments. The radio theater will be performed in Room 120 of the Bioscience Center, and not in the atrium of the same building, where it used to be held. The public is invited to become part of the studio audience. Admission is free and no tickets or reservations are needed. Food and beverages will be available at Café 91.1, a full-service coffeehouse located in the atrium of the Center for Bioscience & Information Technology. WGTD, based out of Gateway Technical College, can be heard in Kenosha/Racine at 91.1, in Elkhorn at 101.7 and in Lake Geneva at 103.3 For more information, contact David Cole at (262) 564-3030 or Steve Brown at (262) 564-3862. Gateway Technical College collaborates with communities in Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties to ensure economic growth and viability by providing education, training, leadership and technological resources to meet the challenging needs of students, employers and communities. wearer the smartest person in the world. Boris and Natasha hatched “fiendish plots” to “get Moose and Squirrel.” Other parts of the show included “Fractured Fairy Tales,” narrated by Edward Everett Horton, “Aesop and Son,” and “Peabody’s Improbable History,” where genius dog Mr. Peabody visited historical figures with his boy Sherman. After two seasons, NBC picked up the series, expanded with new segments, especially “Dudley Do-Right,” a send-up of old-time melodrama, complete with Snidely Whiplash in black cape. The retitled Bullwinkle Show (see entry) hit prime time Sunday evening, September 24, 1961, as the lead-in to Disney’s Wonderful World of Color, which had also been raided from ABC. Bullwinkle was NBC’s entry in the prime-time animation derby started by The Flintstones, but it lasted only one season. NBC moved it to Sunday after- noons in 1962, then Saturday mornings. It returned to ABC in 1964, to be broadcast Sunday mornings until 1972, then went into syndication. Continued interest in the characters prompted the 2000 release of the feature-length film The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Ward produced two other cartoon series for ABC. The Adventures of Hoppity Hooper, in 1964, teamed a young frog with Fillmore Bear and Waldo Wigglesworth, a fox who ran a medicine show and various get-rich-quick schemes. George of the Jungle hit in 1967. The dim-witted Tarzan takeoff was supported by “Super Chicken” and race car driver “Tom Slick.” Ward starred Bullwinkle in a series of Cheerios commercials, and later designed Cap’n Crunch for Quaker Oats, producing their commercials for several years.

‘TOON IN, ‘TOON OUT: AMERICAN TELEVISION ANIMATION AND THE SHAPING OF AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, 1948-1980 by David Perlmutter A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Joint Master’s Program – Departments of History The University of Manitoba / The University of Winnipeg Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Copyright © 2010 by David Perlmutter ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a systematic study of significant American television animation programs produced between 1948 and 1980, with special attention given to selected works produced by three influential studios: Hanna-Barbera, Jay Ward and Filmation. It considers how outside forces such as television network censorship, grassroots political activism, and other social and political forces served to limit how the genre developed, and the extent to which producers chose to test the limits to get their points across. It provides a discussion of masculine images in television animation of the 1950s and 1960s, and of the reactions of television animation producers to outside concerns regarding violent imagery in children’s programming, and the threat of censorship related to this, in the 1970s. My thesis demonstrates that television animation producers, as a result of the need to remain actively involved in production, were forced to change and adapt with the times around them. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me through this endeavor. I have appreciated their support especially in those times when I doubted my abilities, because they never did. I particularly want to thank Professor Churchill and Professor Elvins for giving me their advice and guidance in the long and arduous process of conceiving the draft.

estschrift for Rick Rashid F on his 60th birthday Rich Draves Pamela Ash 9 March 2012 Dan Hart illustration for School of Computer Science, © 2009 Carnegie Mellon University, used with permission. INTRODUCTION RICH DRAVES ou’re holding a Festschrift honoring Rick Rashid on his 60th birthday. You may well ask, “What is a Festschrift?” According to Wikipedia, a Festschrift “is a book Y honoring a respected person, especially an academic, and presented during his or her lifetime.” The Festschrift idea dates back to August 2011, when a group of friends and colleagues suddenly realized that Rick’s 60th birthday was rapidly approaching. In our defense, I can only point to Rick’s youthful appearance and personality. Peter Lee suggested that we organize a Festschrift. The idea was foreign, but everyone immediately recognized that it was the right way to honor Rick. The only problem was timing. Fortunately, this is a common problem and the belated Festschrift is somewhat traditional. We set a goal of holding a colloquium on March 9, 2012 (in conjunction with Microsoft Research’s annual TechFest) and producing a volume by September 2012, within a year of Rick’s birthday. This volume has content similar to the colloquium, but some authors made a different written contribution. The DVD in the back of the book contains a recording of the colloquium. I want to emphasize that we’re celebrating Rick’s career and accomplishments to date but we are also looking forward to many more great things to come. In other words, we need not fear his retirement.

MONKEY BOY TO LUNCH LADY THE SKETCHBOOKS OF JARRETT J. KROSOCZKA MONKEY BOY TO LUNCH LADY THE SKETCHBOOKS OF JARRETT J. KROSOCZKA THE JOSEPH AND SHIRLEY KROSOCZKA MEMORIAL YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS My grandparents, Joseph and Shirley, played an integral role in my life. And that is a massive understatement! Aside from the monumental task of taking me in and raising me as their own, they were always very supportive of my creative efforts. They were brave enough to send me to college to study art, and long before that, they enrolled me in classes at the Worcester Art Museum. From sixth grade on, I took classes in cartooning, animation, illustration, and drawing. Those classes introduced me to peers who shared similar interests and taught me that a career in the arts was a pos- sibility. I was lucky to have my grandparents raise me and luckier still that they had the resources to enroll me in art classes. After their passing, I realized that many kids in my hometown were in similar family situations, but with caregivers who might not be in the position to send them to art classes. To honor my late grandparents and provide opportunities for young artists, I instituted the Joseph and Shirley Krosoczka Memorial Youth Scholarships at the Worcester Art Museum. Regardless of where these young artists take their careers, an education in the arts will enrich their lives and help them become more engaged critical thinkers. I am overjoyed that the “Joe and Shirl Scholarships” can help make that a reality. Proceeds from this book will benefit the Joseph and Shirley Krosoczka Memorial Youth Scholarships at the Worcester Art Museum.
