The Harrowing of Hell in Early Modern English Literature. (2014) Directed by Dr ROMANELLI, CHRISTINA, Ph.D. Sacred Heresies: The Harrowing of Hell in Early Modern English Literature. (2014) Directed by Dr. Michelle Dowd. 325pp. Sacred Heresies traces the English literary tradition of the Harrowing of Hell out of the Catholic Middle Ages, through the Protestant Renaissance, and into the proto- scientific Restoration period. I argue that Christ’s theatrical descent into hell serves as source material for authors wishing to depict characters overcoming evil through confrontation with the devil or demonic figures. Edmund Spenser, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, and Margaret Cavendish draw on the narratives associated with the Harrowing in order to represent (or question) the lawful or righteous use of magic to combat spiritual, social, and political enemies. The ultimate source for these characterizations and actions is the Jesus Christ of the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus, a multi-faceted version of Christ who is rebel, magician, warrior, advocate, and kinfolk simultaneously. The early modern writers who discovered this Christ in their reading of texts like William Langland’s Piers Plowman and their viewing of the vestiges of the cycle plays found a virtuous subject encountering and often debating with diabolical forces, acts that have previously denoted either witchcraft or exorcism. By offering the Harrowing Christ-figure as a third alternative to these codified subject positions, my project puts scholarship on religious change into conversation with investigations of witchcraft trials and proto-scientific discourse in a way that redefines how we understand magic in early modern England. Scholarship that connects magic and religion has focused almost exclusively on the negative aspects of the relationship. Stuart Clark observes that accusations of witchcraft were “endemic in the discourse of religious difference,” and Genevieve Guenther notes that the instrumental aesthetics of conjuring on stage threatened to damn the audience for simply observing events. Given these deleterious associations, any desire to practice magic seems blatantly ludicrous. This study contributes an alternative model for the magical practitioner, a model powerful enough to overcome the damning effects of consorting with Lucifer himself—that of the Harrowing Christ. In the investigation of the motivations for laudable uses of magic in these literary texts, it became clear that magical practice provided a sense of human agency over supernatural events that responded to the lack of agency implied by new Protestant emphases on contemplation and predestination. If as Ian McAdam states, “Radical Protestant internalization of faith placed an almost unbearable burden of responsibility on the believer,” modeling behavior on Christ’s defeat of Satan countered this tendency by empowering the subject to more fully participate in his or her own salvation by confronting damnation directly. Reading the literary texts alongside Tudor and Stuart theological debates about Christ’s descent into hell unearthed an unexpected element in the trajectory of the reinterpretations of the Harrowing of Hell. Whereas poets, playwrights, and prose writers were crafting characters based on the model of Christ, theologians were fashioning Christ himself for new contexts and audiences. For example, an image published with Adam Hill’s 1592 The Defence of the Article: Christ descended into Hell portrays Christ as climbing out of a coffin onto a dragon and a skeleton in order to connect Christ with St George, the patron saint of England. By William Allen’s 1697 sermon titled A Practical Improvement of the Articles of Christ’s Descent into Hell, the fact that scientists have the ability to prove how “the Body of Man becomes that of another” through “successive Transmigration” serves as proof that the infinitely more powerful Christ is “a most intelligent Agent” who can “order and watch the Particles of a Humane Body” in order to raise the dead to everlasting life (D3v). These surprising interpretations of the third article—Christ as nationalistic hero or Christ as scientist extraordinaire—support the claim made by scholars like Dewey Wallace and Patrick Collinson that the English used contested theological positions to separate themselves from both the Catholics and the Puritans and construct a stable identity for the Anglican Church that contributed to the emerging sense of England as a nation-state. This narrative expands the scriptural understanding of Easter weekend by telling the story of what happens between Christ’s death and his resurrection on the third day.     Son of Man (of Steel): Messianic Imagery in Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013) Superman, also called Kal-El or Clark Kent, is a comic book superhero that emerged in the first issue of Action Comics in June 1938 (Siegel, 2013). Director Zack Snyder’s film Man of Steel (2013), which is titled after one of Superman’s most common nicknames, is a testament to how the character has adapted to remain relevant in American culture. The film not only rebooted the Superman franchise but also added an explicitly religious context the story. Superman is heavily associated with Jesus Christ in the film, which may seem surprising to some viewers. However, as Peter Malone argues, “It is not fanciful to link films, even commercial Hollywood movies, to Christology” (21). Although it is a secular film, Man of Steel presents Superman as a cinematic savior for audiences just as a biblical film might offer Jesus Christ to its viewers. Superman’s messianic nature did not initiate in Man of Steel, though, and it will likely continue to be explored beyond this particular film. From his roots in Judaism and eugenics as shown in Action Comics #1 to his parallels with Jesus Christ in Man of Steel, Superman’s distinct otherness has contributed to the character’s messianic roles and lasting endurance in America. Jewish Messianic Origins Because of the time period when he was created and the ethnic identities of his creators, Superman began in Action Comics #1 as a eugenically perfect American. According to Chris Gavaler in “The Well-Born Hero,” eugenics, Latin for “well born,” became a popular subject for research and literature starting in the 1880s.

    Cinemeducation Movies have long been utilized to highlight varied areas in the field of psychiatry, including the role of the psychiatrist, issues in medical ethics, and the stigma toward people with mental illness. Furthermore, courses designed to teach psychopathology to trainees have traditionally used examples from art and literature to emphasize major teaching points. The integration of creative methods to teach psychiatry residents is essential as course directors are met with the challenge of captivating trainees with increasing demands on time and resources. Teachers must continue to strive to create learning environments that give residents opportunities to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information (1). To reach this goal, the use of film for teaching may have advantages over traditional didactics. Films are efficient, as they present a controlled patient scenario that can be used repeatedly from year to year. Psychiatry residency curricula that have incorporated viewing contemporary films were found to be useful and enjoyable pertaining to the field of psychiatry in general (2) as well as specific issues within psychiatry, such as acculturation (3). The construction of a formal movie club has also been shown to be a novel way to teach psychiatry residents various aspects of psychiatry (4). Introducing REDRUMTM Building on Kalra et al. (4), we created REDRUMTM (Reviewing [Mental] Disorders with a Reverent Understanding of the Macabre), a Psychopathology curriculum for PGY-1 and -2 residents at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. REDRUMTM teaches topics in mental illnesses by use of the horror genre. We chose this genre in part because of its immense popularity; the tropes that are portrayed resonate with people at an unconscious level.

    'He Descended into Hell': Creed, Article and Scripture Part 1 JOHN YATES 1. Introduction The 'descent into hell' is an expression of Christian truth to which members of the Anglican Communion are immediately committed in three places: The Apostles' Creed, The Athanasian Creed and Article 3. 1 Despite this it is probably true that of all the credal statements (at least of those in The Apostles' Creed) it is the one which is the most poorly understood. One major aim of this article is to remedy this deficiency in a public forum, and to do so in a manner which self-consciously remains faithful to the classical Anglican emphasis on the essential interrelatedness of scripture, tradition and reason in all matters of theological endeavour. To adopt such an approach is to deny both that appeal to tradition alone can be determinative for doctrine (as in Roman Catholicism), or, that one must necessarily be able to point directly to passages of scripture to authenticate a theological position (as in the claims of various forms of modern Fundamentalism). Article 8 puts the matter at hand clearly. 'The Three Creeds, Nicene Creed, Athanasius's Creed, and that which is commonly called the Apostles' Creed, ought thoroughly to be received and believed: for they may be proved by most certain warrants of Holy Scripture'. This Article does not claim that the form of a credal statement must be scriptural, but rather that because the content of the specifically named creeds are biblical they are to be accepted. 2 The authority of the creeds in matters of faith and conduct rests upon their background in the Bible, and never vice-versa.
