Although the cause lay partly in difficulties experienced in securing convictions, the resolve of magistrates was exposed to fierce scrutiny.Taking an effusive curate’s moral vindication of the city as a starting point, this article examines the social production of sodomy in eighteenth-century Bristol, analyses prosecution patterns and considers the importance of collective moral reputation in the forging of civic history. The Saints Backsiding In 1756, Emanuel Collins, curate, schoolmaster and doggerel poet, penned an extraordinary moral vindication of the city of Bristol, following the public disclosure of a pederasty scandal in the Baptist College and the flight of a number of suspects. In a rare flash of wit, he entitled it, The Saints Backsiding. Not for the first time, it appeared, Collins’ home city was being whispered about elsewhere as a place in which sodomitical transgression was both endemic and unpunished. ‘I am not unacquainted with the many foul reflections that have been cast on my Fellow-Citizens of BRISTOL concerning this most abominable vice’, Collins began, but ‘tis the fate of all cities to be the conflux of bad men.’ They go there ‘to hide themselves in the multitude and to seek security in the crowd’. -

There were an additional 1,100 non-UK short-term residents who were not counted as usual residents on the Census day. The population growth rate between 2001 and 2011 at 5.7%, or an annual growth of 3,200 people, was lower than the national average of 7.8%. A third of the growth was attributable to Gloucester where demographic demand for services and infrastructure would have surged during the period. The current population consisted of 136,600 children and young people aged 0- 19, 349,000 adults aged 20-64, and 111,400 older people aged 65 or above. This included an increase in the working age and the older population, and a small reduction in the number of children and young people in the previous 10 years. -

Evidence of Delivery on Challenging Sites 1.1 It would be easy to assume that with its rich and complex historic environment, high number of brownfield sites, and lower land values in some areas of the city, the Council and developers struggle to get difficult sites delivered. This is simply not the case. The Council has produced this note to highlight that despite its challenges, Gloucester City has a strong track record of enabling development on difficult sites. Regeneration in Gloucester 2.1 Since the 1990s the Council’s direction has been one of regeneration. During this time the council moved its offices to the derelict historic docklands to kick start a regeneration programme that has been hugely successful and is still on-going. From 2004 until 2012 the city was home to the Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company (GHURC). The takes a strong regeneration lead in delivering the Regeneration Strategy (EXAM OTH003) and is currently actively involved in bringing forward the redevelopment of Kings Quarter, St Oswald’s and the Fleece Hotel, amongst others. The Regeneration Strategy commits the Council to a ‘positive planning environment’, to ‘encourage investors and developers to work together’, to use public sector assets and influence to encourage developments’. 2.2 As an example of the Regeneration Strategy in action, Kings Quarter has a £107m investment to deliver the element known as The Forum, a mixed-use scheme including new homes, over 120,000 square feet of office space and a hotel. Kings Square is currently receiving a £5m redevelopment and the Council’s development partner is set to redevelop the Kings Walk shopping centre. -

Players and Performances in Early Modern Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Bristol SARAH ELIZABETH LOWE A thesis submitted to The University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Sciences February 2008 i ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of the responses in the early modern period of civic and church authorities to local and visiting groups of players in Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Bristol. It is also an examination of the venues in which these groups performed. Reactions to these groups varied, and this study explores how these, both positive and negative, were affected by economic, legal and cultural factors. The thesis proceeds chronologically, and is thus divided into twenty-year intervals in order to draw the most effective comparisons between the three urban centres over a number of decades. The first period under examination, the 1560s, records the early reaction of the three settlements to the phenomenon of the Elizabethan travelling company. The relationship between the regional authorities and the patrons comes to the fore in the second period, the 1580s, as the dominance of the ambitious Earl of Leicester grew in the region. Legislation decreeing the withdrawal of mayoral control over itinerant troupes at the close of the sixteenth century, the third period, released civic officials from previous obligations and this influenced the level and character of their hospitality towards the ‘noble’ companies. Although evidence is scarce, the records of Gloucester, Tewkesbury and Bristol contain clues to an attitude towards these entertainers during the reign of James I, the final period under scrutiny. -
