Issue 510 Bud & Broadway on the Move Taking a Morning Show on a Remarkable Journey from Market No
August 1 2016, Issue 510 Bud & Broadway On The Move Taking a morning show on a remarkable journey from market No. 188 to No. 22 was all part of the five- (and-a-half) year plan for WIL/St. Louis’ Bud & Broadway. Of course, their decades of programming and on-air experience helped. Country Aircheck reached out for a travelogue. In 2010, WTVY/Dothan, AL PD Jerry Broadway brought in Bud Ford for afternoons. “After he and I met and started hanging out, we figured out pretty quick that we should be doing a morning show together,” says Broadway. “I was already on the morning show, and an opportunity came up to add a partner, and I decided Bud was going to be that guy.” Don’t Be Your Own Boss: The two tapped prodigious programming experience – Ford’s includes WKDF/Nashville – and aimed to create a show either would hire. Easier said than done, Flatts Forward: Big Machine’s Rascal Flatts in Dallas Saturday it turns out. “It challenges us,” says Ford. “There are two sides. (7/30). Wesley Historical Society Editor: E
Proceedings OFTHE Wesley Historical Society Editor: E. ALAN ROSE, B.A. Volume 49 October 1993 CHOSEN BY GOD: THE FEMALE TRAVELLING PREACHERS OF EARLY PRIMITIVE METHODISM The Wesley Historical Society Lecture 1993 t is just over a hundred years since the last Primitive Methodist female travelling preacher died. Elizabeth Bultitude (1809-1890) I had become a travelling preacher in 1832 and she superannuated after 30 years in 1862, dying in 1890. Of all the female itinerants the first, Sarah Kirkland (1794-1880), and the last, Elizabeth Bultitude, are the best known, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Forty years ago Wesley Swift, wrote in the Proceedings about the female preach ers of Primitive Methodism: We have been able to identify more than forty women itinerants, but the full total must be considerably more.\ This was the starting point of my inquiry. First it is necessary to take a brief look at the whole question of women preaching. The Society of Friends, because they maintained both sexes equally received Inner Light, insisted that anyone who felt so called should be allowed to preach. So it was that many women within the Quaker movement were able to exercise their gifts of preaching without restriction. Many women undertook preaching tours both in this country and abroad, finding release from male-dominated society and religion and equal status with I Proceedings, xxix, p 79. 78 PROCEEDINGS OF THE WFSLEY HISTORICAL SocIETY men in preaching the word of God. For many years female preach ing was, on the whole, limited to the Quakers while the other denominations ignored it as being against Scripture, especially the Pauline injunction about women keeping silence in the church. -

Foregrounding Female Agency in the Dance Culture of Nigeria
WHAT I DO WHEN I DANCE: FOREGROUNDING FEMALE AGENCY IN THE DANCE CULTURE OF NIGERIA Oladoyin Abiona A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2021 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Rahdika Gajjala © 2021 Oladoyin Abiona All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor Scholarship on female representations in hip hop has been predominantly premised on the sexualization of the female body. By focusing mainly on this singular aspect of the genre, we reduce the whole essence of womanhood in the industry to such interpretations. The limited scope of such discussions deprives the women of opportunities to tell their own stories of what they do when they dance. Seeing the cultural significance of dance as a form of popular culture in the Nigerian context, this essay, from a feminist perspective, closes this gap by engaging in a qualitative exploration of the lives of three female dancers in Nigeria telling their stories through dance. They are Kaffayat Oluwatoyin Shafau (Kaffy), Odumewu Debbie (Debbiepinkie), and Usiwo Orezinena Jane (Janemena). Exploring their social media archives, interviews granted to TV stations and a published autobiography “Alajoota” by Kaffy, this essay contextualizes and complicates the interpretations of sexualization in the Nigerian hip hop dance industry. Through dance Nigerian women performers are able to negotiate the heavily male-dominated hip hop scene. For them, dance is a coping strategy, a profession, a space for redefining self and embracing sexuality and femininity, and a form of youthful identity and inclusion. -

Cushing Graduate Program in Music A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies The University of Western Ontario London, Ontario, Canada © Anthony Cushing 2013 ii Abstract This dissertation is primarily concerned with developing an understanding of how the use of pre-recorded digital audio shapes and augments conventional notions of counterpoint. It outlines a theoretical framework for analyzing the contrapuntal elements in electronically and digitally composed musics, specifically music mashups, and Glenn Gould’s Solitude Trilogy ‘contrapuntal radio’ works. -

WHEN LONESOME RAINS COME CLOSE INSIDE _____________ A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF FINE ARTS UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE STONECOAST MFA IN CREATIVE WRITING BY MARY KATHERINE SPAIN ____________ 2016 ABSTRACT In “Out Shelby,” we witness the corrosive effects of familial co-dependency and manipulation in rural Kentucky and the struggles of its ten-year old female narrator, Laura Neil, as she tries to protect the one thing she can relate to: the family hound dog; “Take My Hand” is an urban caper that explores the dependency of strangers in the struggle for self-preservation and the comic relief such shenanigans can often yield; “Look for the Octopus” follows a loosely-tethered elementary school teacher named Penelope Richards as she attempts to protect her opus, a school musical she has written and produced; “A Fortune” examines the malady of malaise brought on by too much affluence as we witness the emotional blunting its worried-well main character, Gillian, is forced to subsist on. -
