THE MIGHTY Mekong Experience the sights, sounds and tastes of Cambodia and Vietnam along the Mekong River

STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM McCULLOCH

IN THE SHAPE-SHIFTING LANDS of Cambodia and Vietnam, nothing is as it seems. I am reminded of this fact as I search for the cruise ship AmaLotus, my home away from home as I explore the Mekong River. I discover that a lake has moved and a day’s road trip is needed to reach the mooring place. So begins my enchanting odyssey. From top: Monks In the dry season, the Tonle Sap behaves like a regular strolling in Oudong, lake. But during the fl ood season (June to October), many decorative gate in Phnom Penh, of the tributaries of the Mekong River reverse their fl ow, AmaLotus sets sail including the channel into Tonle Sap, swelling the lake as along the Mekong much as sixfold, approaching the size of Lake Ontario. It swallows surrounding villages, transforming them into islands, and irrigates the tessellated rice paddies through which we now drive. The bus stops briefl y at Skun, a lake- side market riotous with plump and glossy tropical fruit. On closer inspection, what look like piles of roasted nuts turn out to be fried tarantulas, silkworms and water bugs, all local Cambodian delicacies. »

Insider Info

Travellers Scott and Violet Meekma from Saskatoon have had their eye on the Mekong for a while. After booking a European river cruise with CAA Travel, they were ready to test their sea legs again. They planned their adventure with CAA Travel Con- sultant, Cynthia Wong. “By letting a professional handle the details,” says Violet, “we were able to explore many places in Cambodia and Vietnam, completely stress-free.”

Their “Memories of Cambodia” itinerary included a tuk-tuk tour of Phnom Penh and a visit to memorials of the Cambodian genocide. “We plan to go on another river cruise soon,” adds Violet. “And when we do, we will defi nitely call Cynthia to take care of the details!”

(Hardly any detain- ees survived.) I solemnly tour a gallery of victim photos, every few minutes returning to the shade of a frangipani tree to allow my senses the respite of something beautiful. Our sombre group continues on to the Cheung Ek killing fi eld, a half-hour drive away, where a tower of skulls looms over mass graves. After a quiet dinner back on board the AmaLotus, we are especially grate- ful for the lighthearted entertainment provided by a troupe of costumed chil- dren who regale us with traditional dances. They prance and frolic, mimick- ing monkeys and deer, and we applaud enthusiastically at the spectacle. Some distance downstream, we fl oat into Vietnam. It happens gradually, almost imperceptibly. After crossing into Vietnam, the Mekong becomes busier, and in the villages fi rm hand- shakes replace the gentle bow. Cultur- ally and historically, Cambodia (along with Thailand and Laos) has a strong Indian infl uence, whereas Vietnam has more of a Chinese infl uence. They form part of Indochina, the Southeast Asia region that also includes Laos, Malyasia, Myanmar and Thailand. Downstream in Cai Be, there is a Gothic cathedral to o er spiritual cleansing, and later, after a short walk, we receive a biblical cleansing in the form of a torrential downpour that causes us all to seek shelter in a sweets factory. Rather conveniently, it is also a stop on the tour. I watch with amaze- ment at rice being pu ed to perfection with hot sand, and marvel at a scene of a young woman making caramel sauce. She’s wearing a jade-green dress and tending a golden fi re fed by coconut husks—in all her fi nery, she resembles a Tretchiko painting. Another woman calls me over and o ers me a tipple from a glass thim- ble. I gamely try it. It’s rough, like bad tequila. She points to the bottle from which it came—it contains a dozen venomous snakes. But just like sailing the waters of the Tonle Sap, it’s exhil- arating to go with the fl ow. When she o ers me another, I don’t refuse.

6. Anchorage recently turned 100 Alaska’s most populous city marked its centennial in 2015—and the city has plenty to see and do. This thriving city is surrounded by thousands of hectares of wilderness, so there’s always a temptation to head for the stunning Chugach Mountains nearby, or to the resort town of Girdwood, just south of the city. In town, visitors can tour the Anchorage Museum, which features more than 20 exhibits each year on the art, history and cultures of Alaska. You can also dig into the past at Alaska Botanical Garden’s new heritage garden, fi lled with plants cultivated by the pioneers—or try panning for gold at nearby historic mines.

Now, Battery Service the rail line o ers freshly prepared, all-inclusive dining on its double-decker GoldStar cars (think white-tablecloth settings and oversized windows). In Skagway, the utterly idyllic White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad chugs across high trestle bridges, isolated mountain passes and crystallized snow fi elds, alive with summer’s thaw. The narrow-gauge railroad, built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, is a stunning way to experience Alaska’s history.
