Cuba: A Reading List “Before Night Falls” by Reinaldo Arenas Mr. Arenas was persecuted in Cuba for his writings and for being gay, and eventually fled to the United States. He committed suicide in New York in 1990, at 47. “Before Night Falls,” his autobiography, was later made into a film starring Javier Bardem. In The New York Times Book Review, Roberto González Echevarría wrote: “Anyone who feels the temptation to be lenient in judging Castro’s government should first read this passionate and beautifully written book.” “Dreaming in Cuban” by Cristina García Ms. García’s first novel tells the story of three generations of women in one family, and how staying in Cuba or fleeing the country affects their lives. Reviewing the book in The Times, Michiko Kakutani said that Ms. García had “produced a work that possesses both the intimacy of a Chekhov story and the hallucinatory magic of a novel by Gabriel García Márquez.” “Paradiso” by José Lezama Lima This novel by Mr. Lima, a major Cuban poet, is about a boy’s coming of age and his search for his dead father. In the Book Review, Edmund White wrote that Mr. Lima “not only has the power to create absorbing and memorable images, he has also placed these images into a vast network of philosophical and mythical significance.” “Three Trapped Tigers” by Guillermo Cabrera Infante In the Book Review, Charles Wilson wrote that Mr. Infante’s most celebrated novel “borrows from the playfulness and form of James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ and ‘Finnegans Wake’ as it describes the decadent life of young people who explore Havana’s cabaret society during the Batista era.” “Explosion in a Cathedral” by Alejo Carpentier Set in Cuba and elsewhere, Mr. -

Classic Poetry Series Pablo Neruda - poems - Publication Date: 2011 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Pablo Neruda(12 July 1904 – 23 September 1973) Pablo Neruda was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean poet and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. He chose his pen name after Czech poet Jan Neruda. Neruda wrote in a variety of styles such as erotically charged love poems as in his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." Neruda always wrote in green ink as it was his personal color of hope. On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. During his lifetime, Neruda occupied many diplomatic positions and served a stint as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. When Conservative Chilean President González Videla outlawed communism in Chile in 1948, a warrant was issued for Neruda's arrest. Friends hid him for months in a house basement in the Chilean port of Valparaíso. Later, Neruda escaped into exile through a mountain pass near Maihue Lake into Argentina. Years later, Neruda was a close collaborator to socialist President Salvador Allende. When Neruda returned to Chile after his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Allende invited him to read at the Estadio Nacional before 70,000 people. -

McBride-Limaye: Constructing the "New World" in the Works of Carlos Fuentes 44 CONSTRUCTING THE "NEW WORLD" IN THE WORKS OF CARLOS FUENTES ANN McBRIDE-LiMAYE The development of Mexican culture was a cross-civilizational proc ess. Through her sixteenth-century conquests in the western hemisphere, Spain imposed history on the New World, and in effect she created the New World. Of course it is well to remember that there were two Old Worlds, indigenous and European, two different forms of hegemony, two displaced orders which would combine to produce a colonial mestizo culture, a mixed-blood culture born of the forcible cross between indi genous Aztec and Spanish civilizations . Mestizaje (miscegenation) is the central fact in the New World, a fact which calls up an inevitable chain: the Spanish conquest of the Americas recalls the Spanish reconquest of the Iberian peninsula and the resulting expUlsion of the Moors and the Jews. -

Introduction Dating back to the Ancient Library of Alexandria, the concept of the literary canon has proven to be a durable one. In its over two millennia of existence, literary canons have served purposes religious and secular, promoted agendas political and personal, and have worked to define and redefine the status of both the traditional cultural elite and, most recently, to reflect upon the role played by traditionally underrepresented minority cultures in the discussion of which texts are considered as definitive. My Children, Teaching, and Nimrod the Word
XIV Passions: My Children, Teaching, and Nimrod The word passion has most often been associated with strong sexual desire or lust. I have felt a good deal of that kind of passion in my life but I prefer not to speak of it at this moment. Instead, it is the appetite for life in a broader sense that seems to have driven most of my actions. Moreover, the former craving is focused on an individual (unless the sexual drive is indiscriminant) and depends upon that individual for a response in order to intensify or even maintain. Fixating on my first husband—sticking to him no matter what his response, not being able to say goodbye to him —almost killed me. I had to shift the focus of my sexual passion to another and another and another in order to receive the spark that would rekindle and sustain me. That could have been dangerous; I was lucky. But with the urge to create, the intense passion to “make something,” there was always another outlet, another fulfillment just within reach. My children, teaching, and Nimrod, the journal I edited for so many years, eased my hunger, provided a way to participate and delight in something always changing and growing. from The passion to give birth to and grow with my children has, I believe, been expressed in previous chapters. I loved every aspect of having children conception, to the four births, three of which I watched in a carefully placed mirror at the foot of the hospital delivery room bed: May 6, 1957, birth of Leslie Ringold; November 8, 1959, birth of John Ringold; August 2, 1961: birth of Jim Ringold; July 27, 1964: birth of Suzanne Ringold (Harman). -

Entre las grandes novelas latinoamericanas, las de Augusto Roa Bastos carecen de edad: se diría que son contemporáneas de los orígenes del relato colectivo, debido a que han levantado una mitología del desconsuelo, como si levantaran la tierra misma de la historia paraguaya, esa geografía circular de la dictadura, la guerra, el colonialismo, y el exilio. Pero también esas novelas son contemporáneas de Terra Nostra de Carlos Fuentes y El otoño del patriarca de García Márquez; porque, al final, el relato es la pupila de la historia: la despierta y ya no la deja olvidar. 2. El Chaco es una memoria sangrante. Es, en ese sentido, un architexto: contiene la página, la tinta, y el alfabeto de su novelización; y se inscribe más allá de sus propias evidencias, como si careciese de un punto final, como si fuese un desgarramiento, una fisura, que no ha de cerrarse. -

Letras Hispanas Volume 14 TITLE: Miguel Delibes, embajador de la lengua española: Entrevista a Javier Ortega Álvarez, director gerente de la Fundación Miguel Delibes INTERVIEWEE: Javier Ortega Álvarez INTERVIEWER: Agustín Cuadrado BIOGRAPHY: Javier Ortega Álvarez (Valdepeñas, Ciudad Real, 1970) es el director gerente de la Fundación Miguel Delibes desde el 1 de marzo de 2016. Ha desarrollado la mayor parte de su carrera, casi 30 años, en la Administración General del Estado. En primer lugar, como militar de carrera—perteneciente al Cuerpo de Especialistas del Ejército de Tierra—ha estado destinado en el Hospital Central de la Defensa “Gómez Ulla” y en la Policlínica del Ejército del Aire. Licenciado en Historia Medieval y Diplomado de Estudios Avanzados por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Postgrado de Especialista Universitario en Archivística por la Uni- versidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, y Máster en Gestión y Dirección de Industrias Culturales por la Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes, pertenece al Cuerpo Facultativo de Archiveros, Bibliotecarios y Arqueólogos del Estado, al que accedió como número uno de su promoción. Su actividad profesional en este campo la ha desarrollado como Jefe de Sección de Archivos en el Archivo Central del Ministerio de Cultura, Jefe de la Sección de Reproducción de Documentos en el Archivo General de Simancas y como Jefe de Servicio del Archivo General Central del Ministerio de Hacienda y Administraciones Públicas. Desde el año 2013 compatibilizó estas funciones con la de asesor técnico de la Fundación Miguel Delibes, donde dirigió todos los trabajos relacionados con la organización y digitaliza- ción del Archivo Miguel Delibes, hasta su finalización en enero de 2016.
