ANNUAL CHILD CANCER CHARITY EVENT

FRIDAY 23 FEB, 9AM ONWARDS, FUNDRAISER, TE AWAMUTU

SUNDAY 25 FEB, MEET FROM 9AM, SELWYN PARK, TE AWAMUTU

RIDE TO GATE 10, UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO

MESSAGE FROM GRAHAM SMITH ( 021 606 185 or [email protected] )

Friday 23 Feb

As always, I will be setting up outside Stirling Sports in Alexandra Street at about 7:30 am. Any members who are able to come along and support are more than welcome. I have approached Pak’ N Save and have approval for members to set up outside the store. I will also have the usual 6 or 7 car park spaces coned off for bikes to park. Would love to see guys come along, and if we have a few classic bikes there on show, that would be even better.

Sunday 25 Feb

My role, as normal, is organising intersection marshals along the route. At this point I am still short of a number of marshals, and on the advice of Warren Shaw, Senior Traffic Officer in Te Awamutu, I am trying hard to enlist bikers to fulfil this important role. I have already got a number of volunteers from Ulysses ranks, but I would be very interested in hearing from anyone else who can spare an hour to help out.

You will be given a route of approx. 1200 kms of Auckland & Northland roads selected for their good riding, great scenery and points of interest along the way. Every hour or so, you will need to stop and find the answer to a question. The 2018 Odyssey will take you all the

way to Cape Reinga and finishes at the iconic Puhoi Pub.

The questions can be completed any time between Boxing Day (26 December 2017) and ANZAC Day (25 April 2018). The route can be completed as one continuous ride or several short rides.

REGISTRATION: $30.00. ENTRIES: Entries accepted until end of March 2018.

Entries open to all, Ulysses members and non-members. Fee set to break-even on the event.

“We took a lazy 5 days to do the Northern Odyssey this year. A two-night stop in Houhora and a day’s fishing - snapper and scallops for dinner. I grew up with the story of Hongi Heke and the flag pole, at long last I have seen the place. Watching the super yachts racing at sea while we had steaks and a beer - Russel was a treat.” Don Mardle, Tauranga #5495

“Had an awesome long weekend away doing this Northern Odyssey 2018. It was amazing the places we went to. Congratulations on another awesome ride. Cheers” Valma and David Kuriger, New Plymouth #9585 ======

Chutzpah is a Yiddish word meaning gall, brazen nerve, effrontery, sheer guts and arrogance. Leo Rosten writes, "No other word and no other language can do it justice." Read the story below and you will understand.

THE ESSENCE OF CHUTZPAH:

A little old lady sold pretzels on a mid-town street corner for 25 cents each.

Every day a young man would leave his office building at lunch time and as he passed the pretzel stand, he would leave her a quarter, but never take a pretzel.

This went on for more than three years. The two of them never spoke. One day, as the young man passed the old lady's stand and left his usual quarter, the pretzel lady spoke to him.

Without blinking an eye she said:

"They're 35 cents now."
