    CHAPTER 1 Organisms and Human Bodies as Contagions in the Post-Apocalyptic State Robert A. Booth n this chapter, I show how discourses of contagion and pollution not only imbue many post-apocalyptic cinema and television narratives but also mirror public discourse about immigration. Further, I examine the often- I 1 racialized immigrant in post-apocalyptic film and television that is, in essence, a discourse on insider–outsider social divisions and relationships of power. Finally, I elucidate the argument that post-apocalyptic film and television rein- force the primacy of centralized political authority, namely the State, and post- 9/11 post-apocalyptic film in particular reinforces the hegemony of the State. The post-apocalyptic subgenre of science fiction and/or horror has become popular fodder for cinema and television. As Susan Sontag notes, “the science fiction film . is concerned with the aesthetics of destruction, with the pecu- liar beauties to be found in wreaking havoc, making a mess. And it is in the imagery of destruction that the core of a good science fiction film lies.”2 Portrayals of the post-apocalypse often index or echo visual memories of terrible societal traumatic events of the past.3 With the experience of the social, political, economic, and emotional trauma of the 9/11 attacks, one might reasonably assume that Americans would acquire a distaste for graphic destructive violence. Certainly, after the attacks, filmmakers occasionally felt pressured to remove images of the Twin Towers or to change content that might evoke the tragedy, such as planes crashing into skyscrapers. However, post-apocalyptic genres remain ever popular in American television and cinema.

From a South African perspective the silver medal performance of Ursula Grobler and Kirsten McCann (Tuks/HPC) in the women‟s lightweight double sculls was a definite highlight. The South Africans were involved in a titanic battle with the crews of Canada, New Zealand and China throughout the 2 000 metres of relentless rowing. In the end the time gap between the four boats was not even two seconds. Canada‟s Jennerich and Patricia Obee pipped the South African crew within the last 20 or so strokes to win in 7:10:40. Grobler/McCann finished second in 7:11.47 with New Zealand‟s double world champion crew, Sophie Mackenzie and Julia Edward, third in 7:11.60. China‟s, Wenyi Huang and Feihong Pan, finished fourth in 7:12.19. The Chinese led for the first 1 000 metres. Then Grobler and McCann powered their way to the front for the next 500 metres. The real battle started over the last 500 metres when the Canada crew became stronger and stronger with each stroke. According to McCann the racing was so intense throughout that they did not have any idea of where they were placed. “When we finished we had to ask the umpire whether we had to go on the podium. We had a good race and we are happy, but silver is not gold,” the Tuks/HPC rower said.

We kijken terug op de laatste Olympiade en kijken dan vooruit naar de Olympische Spelen van Tokio in 2021. © FISA Igor Meijer Samenvatting van de afgelopen vier jaar: • Wereldkampioenschappen 2019: IRL, ITA, GER, NOR, ESP, POL • Wereldkampioenschappen 2018: IRL, ITA, BEL, NZL, NOR, ESP • Wereldkampioenschappen 2017: FRA, ITA, CHN, POL, BEL, GER Moet je gezien hebben: De Europese Kampioenschappen 2020 was een van de weinige grote evenementen van het afgelopen jaar en de lichtgewicht heren dubbeltwee was een finale om nooit te vergeten. Italië, Duitsland en België kwamen allemaal binnen een seconde van elkaar over de meet in een wedstrijd die laat zien hoe fel de strijd in deze bootklasse zal zijn op de Olympische Spelen van Tokio in 2021. Herbeleef de opwinding van deze wedstrijd hier opnieuw. Spannendste medaillewedstrijd: In deze Olympiade was de finale van de World Rowing Cup III 2019 die met het kleinste verschil. De Ieren Fintan McCarthy en Paul O’Donovan, die hun voorsprong op het veld langzaam uitbreidden tijdens de eerste 1500m van de wedstrijd, leken klaar voor de overwinning, met Noorwegen en Duitsland op 2 seconden achterstand strijdend om het zilver. Toen de wedstrijd zijn einde naderde, schoot Duitsland naar voren en boeg aan boeg met Ierland kruisten ze de meet, waarbij de Duitsers Jonathan Rommelmann en Jason Osborne het goud pakten met een verschil van slechts 0.03 seconden.
