Kammerorchester des Symphonieorchesters des BR The Chamber Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra was founded by Radoslaw Szulc and Karl Wagner in 2000 to mark the 50th anniversary of the symphony orchestra. Thus emerged a flexible collective of virtuosic players dedicated to cultivating the chamber music ideal. As primus inter pares Radoslaw Szulc oversees the ensemble’s artistic direction. The ensemble has been hailed by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung ”…from the start a first-rate orchestra with its own character. Their sophisticated playing has differentiated structures of communication as well as musical verve…they give special attention to a full sound and achieve the aspired ideal with utmost instrumental precision.” TV and CD productions quickly followed, starting with Tchaikovsky´s works for string orchestra. The chamber orchestra became known early on for its homogenous and lush string sound. They appear frequently in the major musical centers of Europe as well as at international festivals. The chamber orchestra developed a close friendship with Hélène Grimaud and Frank Peter Zimmermann. In 2011 Mozart´s piano concertos in F Major KV 459 and in A Major KV 488 featuring Hélène Grimaud were released by Deutsche Grammophon and became number one on the US Classic Charts. In 2014 the chamber orchestra began recording all of the Mozart violin concertos with Frank Peter Zimmermann; even before completion of the project in 2015 the first part of the recordings appeared in the Classic Charts. The orchestra has also recorded several Bach violin concertos featuring Lisa Batiashvili for Deutsche Grammophon. The chamber orchestra frequently collaborates with other famous soloists such as Lang Lang, Julia Fischer, Mischa Maisky, Sabine Meyer, Pinchas Zukerman, Diana Damrau, Igor Levit, Vadim Repin, Janine Jansen und Maxim Vengerov. -

GIOVANNI GUZZO, Violin
GIOVANNI GUZZO, violin “Guzzo’s technique was immaculate, and his Szymanowski was also stylish and driven. He ripped through the cadenza with terrific verve and left me wanting to hear much more from him”. Andrew Morris, Classicalsource 30 year old violinist Giovanni Guzzo is rapidly rising as one of the most versatile performers of his generation. Born in Venezuela to parents of Italian and Venezuelan heritage, he has captivated audiences around the world with his unique and passionate approach to his performances. Following his sensational solo debut with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, critics described him as a “wonderfully magnetic” and “commanding” performer. Giovanni started his musical studies with the piano at the age of five and violin at the age of six. At the age of 12 he became the youngest violinist to win the National Violin Competition “Juan Bautista Plaza” in Venezuela. A protégé of the renowned French virtuoso violinist Maurice Hasson, Giovanni was granted a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London, from where he graduated with the highest honours. He previously studied with Zakhar Bron at the “Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia” in Madrid. A keen recitalist and chamber musician, Giovanni has worked closely with some of today’s leading musicians, including Martha Argerich, Joshua Bell, Martin Fröst, Daniel Hope, Stephen Hough, Kristóf Baráti, Mats Lidstrom, Gábor Takács-Nagy, István Várdai, the Takacs Quartet and Maxim Vengerov, to name but a few. His talent has been recognised with numerous awards including Her Majesty the Queen’s commendation for Excellence, Gold medal at Marlow Music Festival, PROMIS award given by the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Manoug Parikian and Myra Hess award. -

Vilde FRANG violino Notata giovanissima per la sua espressività e completo dominio tecnico, Vilde Frang è considerata la più interessante violinista della sua generazione da quando dodicenne è stata invitata da Mariss Jansons a suonare con la Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Dopo il suo debutto con la London Philharmonic Orchestra è stata immediatamente rinvitata dall’orchestra per un concerto con Vladimir Jurowski alla Royal Festival Hall nel 2009, seguito da un recital a Wigmore Hall. Nel 2012 le è stato assegnato il prestigioso Credit Suisse Young Artists Award e nel mese di settembre è stata invitata al Festival di Lucerna con i Wiener Philharmoniker diretti da Bernard Haitink. Tra le maggiori orchestre internazionali con cui collabora spiccano la Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, la Mahler Chamber Orchestra, la Philharmonia Orchestra, l’Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, le orchestre di Houston e Atlanta. Vilde Frang è invitata come solista e in ensemble da camera ai Festival di Schleswig- Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Gstaad, Verbier e Lucerna. One of the greats of the repertoire, RCM violinists and the RCM Symphony Orchestra explore Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. This masterclass will be live streamed to www.rcm.ac.uk/live. Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major op 61 Although Beethoven completed only one concerto for violin, he certainly began work on another. All that survives of the earlier attempt is the opening section of a first movement in C major, but the condition of manuscript is such that it is entirely possible that the rest once existed, but has since been lost. The fragment probably dates from the early 1790s and reveals a confident treatment of the soloist, and a penchant for the upper reaches of the instrument’s range that anticipates one of the notable features of the masterpiece that was to follow more than a decade later. The exact circumstances of the D major Concerto’s commissioning are not known, but it was evidently written for Franz Clement, a very distinguished Viennese conductor (notably at the Theater an der Wien) and violinist. -

VILDE FRANG, VIOLIN Vilde is the recipient of the 2012 Credit Suisse Young Artists Award and will perform with the Vienna Philharmonic and Bernard Haitink at the Lucerne Summer Music Festival in September 2012. Noted particularly for her superb musical expression, as well as her well- developed virtuosity and musicality, Vilde Frang has established herself as one of the leading young violinists of her generation since she was engaged by Mariss Jansons at the age of twelve to debut with Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Highlights among her recent and forthcoming engagements include performances with Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Kremerata Baltica, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, BBC Symphony, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, HR- Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, Russian National Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony in Tokyo and Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, with conductors including Ivan Fischer, Paavo Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mariss Jansons, David Zinman, Vassily Sinaisky, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Gianandrea Noseda. She appears as a recitalist and chamber musician at festivals in Schleswig- Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Lockenhaus, Gstaad, Verbier and Lucerne. Amongst her collaborators were Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, Martha Argerich, Julian Rachlin, Leif Ove Andsnes and Maxim Vengerov, and together with Anne-Sophie Mutter she has toured in Europe and the US, playing Bach's Double Concerto with Camerata Salzburg. Son ya 17 las ediciones que cumple una iniciativa que ha convertido la excelencia en su sello Ede garantía al servicio de la formación y la difusión musical. Del 1 al 27 de julio, las aulas del Conservatorio Jesús de Monasterio volverán a acoger a los grandes maestros del panorama internacional para ofrecer un intercambio único a los jóvenes talentos de las doce escuelas europeas más prestigiosas. Un encuentro entre la experiencia de grandísimos artistas consagrados y el entusiasmo y el potencial de las nuevas figuras llamadas a triunfar en los escenarios del futuro. Y junto a la academia, la difusión musical más allá de las aulas para acercar a los cántabros momentos inolvidables en medio centenar de conciertos que llegarán al Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria, al Palacio de La Magdalena y la iglesia de Santa Lucía, en Santander, pero también a otra veintena de localidades cántabras, como Torrelavega, Comillas, Santillana del Mar o Laredo. Tenemos por delante un mes para disfrutar de la Música con mayúsculas, desde el concierto inaugural a cargo de la Orquesta Sinfónica Freixenet, dirigida por el maestro Csaba, a los homenajes al pianista Bashkirov y al maestro Rostropovich, pasando por el concierto extraordinario para familias, que acercará la música de Stravinsky al público de todas las edades. By Daniel Grab Master of Music in Music, Performance The purpose of this research project is to examine the widespread notion among classical musicians that while there are many high level technical players today, their artistry and most specifically their individuality is not on the level of the “old greats”. The main questions at stake are: Is there merit to this pervasive idea and if so what is behind this trend? Is this viewpoint partially a perspective-based illusion much like the idea held by each aging generation since the dawn of humanity supposing that the newer generation is less capable, not as special, lacking depth, etc. This project will focus on eight interpretations of Mendelssohn violin concerto as sources; four by violinists born around the turn of the century, and four by violinists currently concertizing today. -

Nippon Music Foundation celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year, and 10 years have passed since we started the “Acquisition and Loan of Stringed Instruments” program, one of the Foundation’s main pillars of activities. The Foundation has now come to own 18 Stradivarius and 2 Guarneri del Gesu, and as a custodian of the world cultural assets, maintains these precious instruments for future generations and loans them gratis to young promising musicians regardless of their nationalities. Stradivarius 1722 violin “Jupiter” has been on loan to Mr. Daishin Kashimoto since 1998. Based in Freiburg, Germany, Mr. Kashimoto is among the top young violinists of the world, and one of the most popular musicians in Japan. Besides his soloist activities, Mr. Kashimoto’s warm personalities have also encouraged other musicians to invite him as a member of many chamber music performances worldwide. Mr. Kashimoto is now in Japan for his recitals at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall and Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall, and kindly agreed to perform for us tonight.
