EXAMINING THE INNER EXPERIENCE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER By Johanah Yoosun Kang Bachelor of Arts – Psychology University of Nevada, Las Vegas 2008 Master of Arts – Psychology University of Nevada, Las Vegas 2013 A doctoral dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy – Psychology Department of Psychology College of Liberal Arts The Graduate College University of Nevada, Las Vegas December 2015 ! Dissertation Approval The Graduate College The University of Nevada, Las Vegas November 9, 2015 This dissertation prepared by Johanah Yoosun Kang entitled Examining the Inner Experience of Individuals with Bipolar Disorder is approved in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Psychology Department of Psychology Christopher Heavey, Ph.D. Kathryn Hausbeck Korgan, Ph.D. Examination Committee Chair Graduate College Interim Dean Russel T. Hurlbert, Ph.D. Examination Committee Member Daniel N. Allen, Ph.D. Examination Committee Member Jennifer R. Keene, Ph.D. Graduate College Faculty Representative ii ABSTRACT Bipolar disorder (BD) is a serious, chronic mood disorder. The diagnostic criteria for BD provide a description of expected experiences of individuals with BD (e.g., sadness, expansive mood, inflated self-esteem, anhedonia). Despite these criteria, the details of inner experience of individuals with BD are generally unknown. Understanding the inner experience of individuals with BD may provide greater understanding of the lived experience of BD and may provide insights into treating BD. The present study examined the inner experience of six individuals with BD using Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES), a method aimed at apprehending high- fidelity accounts of momentary inner experience. Results revealed that our participants varied in their ability to have clear inner experience, but they had clear experiences of sensory awareness and/or inner seeing. They had a high frequency of no clear inner experience or inner experience that was unclear in some way in the moment. They also had a low frequency of the coherent experience of feelings. Lastly, four participants experienced noteworthy perceptual experiences at a higher than average frequency as compared to the inner experience of individuals without a psychiatric diagnosis. This study highlights the importance of increasing efforts to explore the inner experience of individuals diagnosed with BD and/or other mental illnesses, and the utility of the DES method for investigating these individuals’ inner experience. iii ! ACKNOWLEDGMENTS It is with great enthusiasm that I thank those who made this dissertation possible. First, to the six individuals who participated in sampling for this project: Thank you for your courage and willingness to share the personal moments of your inner experience with us. I am enormously grateful to Dr. Chris Heavey for his mentorship throughout this study, and for inspiring me to pursue my doctorate in clinical psychology. Thank you to Dr. Russ Hurlburt for your guidance throughout this study as well as throughout my time as a member of the DES lab. Thanks to my committee members for your thoughtful feedback and expressing your interest in DES studies. I am grateful to Dr. Sharon Jones-Forrester for being my warmest and enthusiastic supporter throughout my clinical training. Thank you to my family and friends for your endless words and acts of encouragement that have helped me along this journey of earning my degree. Lastly, I give special thanks to Eric for being my most loving supporter. ! iv TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT ................................................................................................................................... iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS ............................................................................................................. iv CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION ...................................................................................................1 CHAPTER 2 DEFINITIONS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER ...........................................................5 History of Bipolar Disorder .............................................................................................................5 Current Diagnostic Features ............................................................................................................6 Assessment .......................................................................................................................................7 CHAPTER 3 NATURE OF BIPOLAR DISORDER ..................................................................10 Epidemiology .................................................................................................................................10 Natural History and Course ...........................................................................................................12 Etiology ..........................................................................................................................................14 Comorbidity ...................................................................................................................................15 CHAPTER 4 CONSEQUENCES OF BIPOLAR DISORDER ..................................................17 Impairments in Social Relationships .............................................................................................17 Occupational Impairment ...............................................................................................................19 Cognitive Impairment ....................................................................................................................20 Lack of Insight ...............................................................................................................................20 Impulsivity .....................................................................................................................................21 Sleep Disturbance ..........................................................................................................................21 CHAPTER 5 METHODS OF STUDYING THE EXPERIENCE OF BIPOLAR DISORDER. 23 First-Person Accounts ....................................................................................................................23 Interviews .......................................................................................................................................24 Experience Sampling Methods ......................................................................................................27 Diary Methods ...............................................................................................................................32 Descriptive Experience Sampling (DES) .......................................................................................34 The Present Study ..........................................................................................................................42 CHAPTER 6 METHOD ..............................................................................................................44 Participants .....................................................................................................................................44 Apparatus .......................................................................................................................................44 Procedure .......................................................................................................................................45 Analysis of Data .............................................................................................................................48 CHAPTER 7 IDIOGRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF JOSH’S EXPERIENCES ..........................51 Josh’s Sampling Experience ..........................................................................................................53 Sensory Awareness ........................................................................................................................54 Inner Seeing ...................................................................................................................................58

  • The Sonic Bildungsroman: Coming-Of-Age Narratives in Album Form
The Sonic Bildungsroman: Coming-of-Age Narratives in Album Form Dallas Killeen TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 2019 __________________________________________ Hannah Wojciehowski Department of English Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Chad Bennett Department of English Second Reader Abstract Author: Dallas Killeen Title: The Sonic Bildungsroman: Coming-of-Age Narratives in Album Form Supervising Professors: Hannah Wojciehowski, Ph.D. Chad Bennett, Ph.D. The Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age story, deals with the transitional period of adolescence. Although initially conceived in the novel form, the Bildungsroman has since found expression in various media. This thesis expands the scope of the genre by describing the “sonic Bildungsroman,” or coming-of-age album, and exploring a few key examples of this previously undefined concept. Furthermore, the record as a medium affords musicians narrative agency critical to their identity development, so this project positions the coming- of-age album squarely in the tradition of the Bildungsroman as a tool for self-cultivation. This thesis examines two albums in great detail: Pure Heroine by Lorde and Channel Orange by Frank Ocean. In these records, Lorde and Ocean lyrically, musically, and visually portray their journeys toward self-actualization. While the works show thematic similarities in their respective presentations of the adolescent experience, Lorde and Ocean craft stories colored by their unique identities. In this way, the two albums capture distinct approaches to constructing coming-of-age narratives in album form, yet both represent foundational examples of the genre due to their subject matter, narrative trajectory, and careful composition. From this basis, this project offers a framework for understanding how popular musicians construct coming-of-age stories in their albums—and for understanding how these stories affect us as listeners.

  • Does NME Even Know What a Music Blog Is?
Does NME even know what a music blog is?: The Rhetoric and Social Meaning of MP3 Blogs by Larissa Wodtke A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in English - Rhetoric and Communication Design Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2008 © Larissa Wodtke 2008 Author‘s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract MP3 blogs and their aggregators, which have risen to prominence over the past four years, are presenting an alternative way of promoting and discovering new music. I will argue that MP3 files greatly affect MP3 blogs in terms of shaping them as: a genre separate from general weblogs and music blogs without MP3s, especially due to the impact of MP3 blog aggregators such as The Hype Machine and Elbows; a particular form of rhetoric illuminated by Kenneth Burke's dramatistic ratios of agency-purpose, purpose-act and scene-act; and as a potentially subversive subculture, which like other subcultures, exists in a symbiotic relationship with the traditional media it defines itself against. Using excerpts from multiple MP3 blogs and their forums, interviews with MP3 bloggers and Anthony Volodkin (creator of The Hype Machine), references to MP3 blogs in traditional press, and Burke's theory of dramatism and Hodge and Kress's theories of social semiotics, I will demonstrate that the MP3 file is not only changing the way music is consumed and circulated, but also the way music is promoted and discussed.

It simultaneously expands contemporary critical inquiry in two key ways: that is, I analyze nineteenth-century black women’s interrogation of the effects of liberalism as juridical, economic, and affective performance; and I unsettle sedimented perspectives of black resistance as inherently militant, male, and vernacular. The first three chapters, in particular, address the ways in which Harriet Wilson, Elizabeth Keckly, and Anna Julia Cooper undermine fundamental liberal and Enlightenment precepts including reason, individualism, and the privileging of a transcendental Subject.

  • Thesis an Indie Hype Cycle Built for Two: a Case Study
THESIS AN INDIE HYPE CYCLE BUILT FOR TWO: A CASE STUDY OF THE PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEWS OF ARCADE FIRE AND CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH Submitted by Samuel R. Ernst Department of Communication Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Spring 2012 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Jonathan Lupo David Scott Diffrient Deborah Thompson ABSTRACT AN INDIE HYPE CYCLE BUILT FOR TWO: A CASE STUDY OF THE PITCHFORK ALBUM REVIEWS OF ARCADE FIRE AND CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH This thesis investigates the whims of critical reception in the indie rock world and its effects upon the hype cycle. I define the indie hype cycle as a naturalized communicative process governing the flow of critical favor within the indie music community and identify its four primary phases as entrance on to the scene, hype generation, backlash, and obscurity/visibility. To understand the interaction between the hype cycle and critical reception, the project focuses on Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (CYHSY) as two bands emblematic of the critical divergence possible after initial success. It compares the reviews of the bands’ debut and sophomore albums by Pitchfork, a prominent indie music website, and identifies genre, elitism, and authenticity as key constructs in the way the site frames the bands as indie, and thus, worthy of praise. I argue that an economy of authenticity—featuring emotional, economic, and talent- based forms—affects the indie hype cycle in a variety of ways. The thesis concludes that the mechanics of indie music criticism have extensive influence upon the indie hype cycle.
