    Bhai Dooj: Praying for Brothers

Bhai Dhooj 1003 281016 Bhai Dooj: Praying for Brothers Jawhar Sircar Ananda Bazar Patrika, 13th November 2015 (English Version) It is amazing that India is the only country in the world that has special celebrations like Bhratri Dwitiya and Raksha Bandhan for siblings to shower their affections on each other. Popularly known as Bhaiya Dhuj in north India, it is Bhai Phota in Bengal and in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Konkan, it is celebrated as Bhai Beej or Bhau Beej. In Nepal, this Bhai Tika is almost as important as Dussehra or Dashami and it is also called Yama Dwitiya in the South. While Kali Puja and Bhai Phota are two distinct religious events in Bengal separated by just two days, in most parts of India this festival is part of the five-day long Deepawali festival. For centuries, sisters have prayed for the safety of their brothers by performing a small aarti ceremony and applying a prominent phota or tika on the forehead of their brothers, as a talisman against any misfortune. We are told that Krishna's sister Subhadra was so delighted to see him unharmed after his battle with the evil demon Narakasur that she applied a sacred tilak on his forehead. This is supposed to have inspired Bhai Phota but frankly, this tilak would have been more useful before Krishna's fight. Let us admit that there are not many references to Bhai Phota in sacred literature, while Rakhi Bandhan is mentioned profusely in Bhavishya Purana, Bhagawat Purana and Vishnu Purana. It is clear that Bhai Phota has been essentially a folk ritual that has been upheld by the people themselves.

Female Emancipation or Pativrata? A Qualitative Study of Women’s Leadership in Rituals at Assi Ghat, Varanasi Kvinnlig frigörelse eller Pativrata? En kvalitativ studie av kvinnligt ledarskap i ritualer på Assi Ghat i Varanasi Alexsandra Hallén The University of Karlstad Religion Religion III 15hp Supervisor: Katarina Plank Examiner: Tomas Appelqvist 2020-06-05 Title: Female Emancipation or Pativrata?: A qualitative study of female leadership and participation in rituals at Assi Ghat, Varanasi. Titel på svenska: Kvinnlig frigörelse eller Pativrata?: En kvalitativ studie av kvinnligt ledarskap och deltagande i ritualer på Assi Ghat i Varanasi. Author: Alexsandra Hallén Pages: 42 Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore the purposes and effects of women’s leadership in rituals in relation to their social and religious role in society. This was carried out by using qualitative methods and analyzing the data by using ritual theory and theories on religion and gender. The interviews and observations focused on two rituals carried out by women: the Partiv Puja and the Chhath Puja. The results show that women participate in the rituals for religious, cultural, and social reasons, and that their participation in the rituals could be viewed as a reclaim of the public space of religious practice. Furthermore, the women’s participation and leadership in rituals could also, from a ritual theoretic perspective, be viewed as a tool to refuse and change social power structures. The research was carried out in Varanasi, India, during an eight-week Minor Field Study and the study was performed by using observations and interviews, which were conducted between the 21st of October and the 2nd of December 2018.

  • About Deepawali - the Social Significance

About Deepawali - the Social Significance

About Deepawali - The Social Significance Deepa means a lamp and avali means a row. The word literally means a row of lights. We normally think that Deepawali is about a lamplight, a deepa. In fact, Deepawali is not about a single deepa, it is about many. It is about a collective, an organization, a formation of lamps. It is about the relationship between one lamp and the rest of the lamps in the collective. The secret message of deepawali is hidden in its very name. Let us begin with a short prayer that sums up the essence of this remarkable festival. Deepawali Prayer Om Asato Maa Sat Gamaya Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya Mrityor Maa Amritam Gamaya Sat means the truth and a-sat is its negation or falsehood. So the first line means: lead me from Falsehood to Truth. Tamas is darkness or ignorance. And jyoti is light. So the second line means: lead me from darkness or ignorance to light or knowledge. The third line means lead me from death (mtriyu ) to immortality (amrita). Deepawali is the festival of lights symbolizing the lighting of the lamp of knowledge and removing ignorance, in our lives, and in those of others. It is this deeper message of social consciousness behind the glamour of Deepawali that this article attempts to convey. The Diya - Lamp The central theme behind deepawali rests on the concept of the Diya, the lamp. In Hindu tradition Ishwara or God is the "Knowledge principle," the Reality, the source of all knowledge. The light enables one to see the reality that is ever present.

Sandhyopaasan:The Hindu Ritual As a Foundation of Vedic Education

53| Rajendra Raj Timilsina Sandhyopaasan:The Hindu Ritual as a Foundation of Vedic Education Rajendra Raj Timilsina Abstract Yoga, meditation and Hasta Mudra Chikitsa (medication through the exercise or gesture of hands) known as spiritual activities in the past have been emerged as bases to maintain one’s health, peace and tranquility. Some people follow yoga, some focus on meditation and others apply “Hasta Chikitsa” or “Mudra”. They are separate traditional exercises. They require to spend 10 to 30 minutes once or twice a day for their optional exercise/s. It is proved that such practice has productive effect in different health treatments. This paper has applied the methods of observation, interview and literature review as qualitative paradigm in exploring their original roots of Vedic Sandhyopaasan. Twice born castes (Brahman, Chhetri and Baishya) of Nepali Hindu society has been found practicing all components of the exercises as a unified ritual of Sandhyopaasan. Upanayan (Bratabandha) ritual teaches Sandhyopaasan procedures for self control and self healing of the performers. Brahman is not eligible as Brahman without doing the ritual daily. However, this study has found that some Dalits have also been practicing Sandhyopaasan daily and feeling relaxed. Findings of this study show that Sandhyopaasan is a compact package of yoga, meditations and Hasta Chikitsa. Students and gurus of Vedas have been regularly following the compact package for inner peace and self control. Root of yoga, meditation and “Mudra” is Sandhyopaasan and this is the base of Hindu education system. The paper analyzes the ritual through Hindu educational perspective.
