First Division

The season kicked off with last year’s champions Goodwick United failing to score a goal in their first two games. However on the positive side they never conceded one either with the two 0-0 draws being against their main rivals from the previous season Merlins Bridge and Fishguard Sports.

The early season pace setters were Monkton Swifts and Carew who both won six and drew one of their first seven fixtures. They met each other on 11/11/78 with the Swifts winning the game convincingly 3-0 thanks to goals from Roy Davies, Dave Dickinson and Graham Brown. This left only two unbeaten sides left in the league, the Swifts and Goodwick United.

When the sides met at Monkton on 16/12/78 the game proved to be a classic. Roy Davies, Graham Brown (2), and Jimmy Pickering had given the homesters a comfortable lead but a great comeback by Goodwick with goals from Dai Hughes, Adi John and Stuart Wilson left the final scoreline as 4-3.

This left the table at 30/12/78 looking like

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Kilgetty 14 10 2 2 46 14 32 22 2 Monkton Swifts 12 9 3 0 44 15 29 21 3 Carew 13 9 2 2 34 12 22 20 4 Goodwick United 14 6 6 2 32 23 9 18 5 Fishguard Sports 13 5 6 2 25 18 7 16 6 Merlins Bridge 12 6 2 4 48 24 24 14 7 Narberth 12 4 5 3 31 24 7 13 8 Milford Athletic 10 4 3 3 22 11 11 11 9 Solva 13 5 0 8 21 26 -5 10 10 Hakin United 10 2 4 4 12 17 -5 8 11 Milford United 13 2 4 7 17 35 -18 8 12 Johnston 14 2 2 10 18 41 -23 6 13 MHPC 11 1 2 8 21 61 -40 4 14 Neyland 13 1 1 11 11 61 -50 3

Kilgetty led the table despite a sluggish start where they had only won two of their first six games. However a 4-1 victory over Goodwick United on the last Saturday in December extended their winning streak to an impressive eight wins in a row. Two Graham Jenkins goals and one each from Alan Brindley and Michael Stewart proved enough to secure the victory. Jeff Wilson scored the lone Goodwick goal. This winning run also included a 1-0 victory over local rivals Carew where a penalty by Graham Jenkins proved to be the difference.

The Swifts however were the team to beat and they finally lost their unbeaten tag on 10/2/79 when they travelled to Carew when goals by David Arthur and a Gerald Hick penalty cancelled out a Kenny Lawrence strike for the visitors. This success for the villagers was followed up with another key win on the 24th of the month when they avenged their earlier defeat to Kilgetty with a crucial 1-0 success.

However none of the top three suffered any further set backs up to 17/3/79 when the top of the table was as follows, with Merlins Bridge significantly in sixth place:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Carew 19 13 4 2 45 18 27 30 2 Monkton Swifts 17 12 4 1 64 22 42 28 3 Kilgetty 18 12 3 3 56 18 38 27 4 Milford Athletic 21 9 6 6 38 26 12 24 5 Fishguard Sports 18 8 7 3 36 25 11 23 6 Merlins Bridge 16 10 2 4 74 27 47 22

On the 24 th March Kilgetty lost a seven goal thriller against Merlins Bridge. The two sides had already booked a Senior cup final place and in this dress rehearsal goals from Macky Bowen, Dekker Thomas and Brian Cutler (2), gave the Bridge a 4-3 success. Alan Brindley, Steve Flook and a late Graham Jenkins penalty replied for the visitors.

On the same day, Carew suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against third from bottom Johnston, with Peter Griffiths scoring the all important goal, and the Swifts thrashed MHPC 8-1 with Graham Brown getting four of the goals. These results left the Swifts in pole position, although at the end of March the Bridge kept alight their hopes by putting four passed Carew with Brian Cutler (2), Dekker Thomas and Micky Ellis cancelling out a lone Dai Sefton strike for the homesters.

Thus going into the final month of the season the top four were as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Monkton Swifts 18 13 4 1 72 23 49 30 2 Kilgetty 21 13 4 4 63 25 38 30 3 Carew 21 13 4 4 46 23 23 30 4 Merlins Bridge 18 12 2 4 82 31 51 26

April 4th saw Monkton Swifts end Kilgetty’s failing title hopes with a 4-1 success thanks to goals from Graham Brown, Roy Davies, Byron Phillips and Andrew Grey. Graham Jenkins replied with a penalty for Kilgetty. Carew also stumbled with a 2-2 draw against Narberth though the Bridge kept up the pressure with an 8-1 success against Fishguard Sports with Brian Cutler netting another hat trick in the process.

Kilgetty avenged the above defeat with a 2-1 success against the Swifts on 14 th April with Ronnie Hurst and Steve Turner scoring. Neil Jones netted for the Swifts. On the same day the Bridge smashed another six past Milford Athletic with Brian Cutler this time netting four of the goals.

The 21 st saw the Senior Cup final and two days later the Bridge faced the Swifts in a crucial head to head clash. A Micky Ellis goal two minutes into the second half was enough to secure the points for the Bridge though the local press reported upon an off the ball incident between Mark Ashman and Graham Brown that Harry Hangar the Monkton manager insisted should have resulted in a Monkton penalty.

However this result put the Bridge into pole position and when Monkton Swifts lost 2-1 at Milford United the Bridge needed one point from their last two games to win the title. This they did with ease crushing Narberth 8-1 (no goal scorers available) and then winning 2-1 at Hakin United thanks to goals from Macky Bowen and Tally John.

At the other end of the table the relegation battle involved three clubs with the table as at 17/3/79 reading as follows

12 MHPC 20 2 5 13 32 86 -54 9 13 Johnston 17 3 2 12 23 51 -28 8 14 Neyland 19 1 1 17 14 87 -73 3

Johnston then picked up seven points in their next four games including a 3-3 draw against Monkton Swifts, a 1-0 win against Carew, and wins against relegation rivals Neyland 3-2 (Martin Davies 2, Terry Hazell) and MHPC 5-1 (Martin Davies 2, Terry Hazell, Peter Griffiths and Richard James). Their survival was eventually secured with a goalless draw against Milford Athletic on 7/4/79.

The final league table read as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Merlins Bridge 26 20 2 4 111 34 77 42 2 Monkton Swifts 26 16 6 4 86 31 55 38 3 Kilgetty 26 16 5 5 73 32 41 37 4 Carew 26 15 5 6 54 30 24 35 5 Goodwick United 26 12 8 6 52 38 14 32 6 Fishguard Sports 26 11 9 6 56 42 14 31 7 Milford Athletic 26 9 8 9 41 40 1 26 8 Milford United 26 9 6 11 39 52 -13 24 9 Narberth 26 6 11 9 52 51 1 23 10 Hakin United 26 8 6 12 48 45 3 22 11 Solva 26 9 4 13 40 60 -20 22 12 Johnston 26 7 4 15 37 61 -24 18 13 MHPC 26 2 5 19 36 118 -82 9 14 Neyland 26 2 1 23 25 116 -91 5

Merlins Bridge success had been based on winning their last 14 games whilst runners up Monkton Swifts only won one of their last six games, picking up only four points in the process.

Some of the leading scorers during the season were Brian Cutler (41) and Eric James (13) (Merlins Bridge) Graham Brown (20) and Roy Davies (16) (Monkton Swifts) Graham Jenkins (26) (Kilgetty) Stuart Wilson (20) (Goodwick United)

The figures in brackets are the minimum number of league goals scored and would have been greater if all goal scorers were available.

Brian Cutler’s goals included at least 5 hat tricks and an amazing ten goals in a 17-1 victory away to MHPC in December.

Division Two

Division Two saw RAF Brawdy lose their first game of the season 3-2 away to Pennar Robins but then win their next eleven before being held to a goalless draw away to New Hedges/Saundersfoot. This run included a 3-2 win over Angle where the home scorers were not available but Haydn Phillips and Norman Cook scored for the visitors, and a 9-0 success over New Hedges/Saundersfoot where goals from Mike Gosney (3), Phil Roberts (2), Alistair Barnes (2) and Brian McMahon (2) gave the airmen a massive win against a team that were to prove one of their biggest rivals.

The last unbeaten record in the league remained with relegated St Ishmaels who remained unbeaten until the end of October but then they crashed 7-0 away to Fishguard Sports II for whom Huw Bevan and Terry Stevens both netted a brace.

This all resulted in the table at the end of December looking as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 RAF Brawdy 14 12 1 1 80 15 65 25 2 New Hedges/Saundersfoot 14 8 3 3 37 28 9 19 3 Angle 12 7 4 1 35 19 16 18 4 St Ishmaels 11 7 2 2 28 20 8 16 5 St Clears 14 7 1 6 34 25 9 15 6 Haverfordwest County 11 5 3 3 22 17 5 13 7 Merlins Bridge II 11 6 0 5 28 29 -1 12 8 Pennar Robins 13 5 2 6 23 31 -8 12 9 Fishguard Sports II 12 4 3 5 31 31 0 11 10 Goodwick United II 13 3 3 7 22 38 -16 9 11 Milford Athletic II 12 4 0 8 15 39 -24 8 12 Camrose 13 3 1 9 29 36 -7 7 13 Monkton Swifts II 11 3 1 7 22 40 -18 7 14 P & EE Pendine 13 0 2 11 14 52 -38 2

However back to back 3-1 home defeats for the airmen in February, against Merlins Bridge II (Roy Fairhurst 2, Mike Davies) and Monkton Swifts II saw the lead at the top narrow, and when they lost 3-0 to St Ishmaels (Steven Scale 2, Mark Davies) on 3/3/79 they remained top but three other sides could, if they won their games in hand, have gone ahead of them.

Going into April the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 RAF Brawdy 22 15 3 4 106 30 76 33 2 Angle 21 12 6 3 71 41 30 30 3 St Ishmaels 17 11 3 3 48 28 20 25 4 St Clears 20 11 1 8 55 41 14 23 5 New Hedges/Saundersfoot 15 9 3 3 39 29 10 21

Early April saw St Ishmaels suffer three consecutive defeats, 3-0 at home to Angle (Peter Hughes (pen), Ron Watkins and Nigel Morgan), 2-0 away to Goodwick United II and 2-0 away to Pennar Robins. These results severely dented their hopes of returning to the top division at the first attempt.

Goodwick United then further dented RAF Brawdy’s promotion hopes with a 2-0 win, but failed to achieve a hat trick of top of the table scalps when they crashed 5-1 away to Angle. Peter Hughes (2), Nigel Morgan, Roger Scourfield and Hayden Phillips netted for the villagers who after this result also went top of the table. However Brawdy soon regained this mantle with a 2-0 away win at Fishguard Sports II, though still in contention were New Hedges/Saundersfoot who sat ominously seven points behind the leaders with five games in hand.

New Hedges/Saundersfoot then embarked on a run of 5 matches within eight days which culminated with a 1-1 draw with Angle on 25/4. Roger Scourfield had given Angle the lead only for Mark Brindley to equalise with three minutes to go. The other four matches resulted in three home wins against Merlins Bridge II 7-2, Camrose 10-0 (Neil Webb 2 Grant Llewellyn 2, Richard Eastlake, Gary McNeilly, Paul Hancock, Viv John, Stuart McKay and Joey Lydon) and Pennar Robins 10-2 (Richard Eastlake 2, Gary McNeilly 2, Viv John 2, Stuart McKay 2 and Joey Lydon 2) along with a 1-1 draw away to Goodwick United where Gary McNeilly scored for New Hedges with David O’Connor scoring for the homesters. They eventually went top of the table after a 4-0 away success to Merlins Bridge II and were eventually crowned champions when RAF Brawdy, who needed a point from their last game to join New Hedges/Saundersfoot in the first division, suffered a disappointing 4-1 defeat away to St Clears.

This allowed Angle to take the last promotion place and New Hedges/Saundersfoot finished the season with a 4-2 success away at St Clears. Their success had been built on remaining unbeaten for the last 13 games of the season, which also involved them in playing their last eleven fixtures in the final month of the season!

Division Three

The newly structured third division saw the two sides that would have been promoted from the old division three dominate the league, though with a slight role reversal in that Kilgetty II ended up as champions with Newcastle Emlyn as runners up.

Kilgetty’s success included a thumping 21-0 victory over Solva II with no fewer than 4 hat-tricks for Steve Lewis (5), Norman James (4), Ronnie Hurst (4) and Paul Griffiths (3) with one each for Peter Lines, Malcolm Brace, Keith Cole, Alistair Murdoch and an own goal.

Strangely enough Kilgetty’s only defeat of the season saw them lose 5-3 at Solva in March, a total turnaround from the first game. The names of the goal scorers did not appear in the local press.

This was not the only 20 goal result of the season and Steynton United also hit 20, in a 20-1 victory over New Hedges/Saundersfoot II. Paul John (5), Jimmy Harding (5), Mike Morris (2), Alan Chase, Harry Thomas (2), Mike Barrett, Jimmy Thomas, Billy Mansell and Phil Broome all appearing on the scoresheet.

A key result early in the season proved to be Kilgetty’s 3-1 victory at Newcastle Emlyn where Hugh Davies scored for the home team with Roy Lewis, Steve Lewis and Ken Hart scoring for the visitors. The reverse fixture in December saw the sides battle out a 1-1 draw with Ronnie Hurst scoring the lone home goal.

Clarbeston Road suffered back to back relegations having been relegated from division two last year they suffered the same fate this year.

Division Four

The fourth division saw league new comers Letterston boast a 100% record scoring 163 goals in the process, 38 of them coming in two 19 goal performances against Pembroke Power Station. Billy Robb (12), Lyn Lewis (12), Mike Delaney (6) Arthur Aylward (3), Eddie Merry (2), Stuart Griffiths Tony Jones and Nigel Nicholas scoring all the goals in the two games. They also scored 29 in their two fixtures against Manorbier United II with a 16-0 and 13-1 scoreline

Senior Cup

The tie of the first round saw defending champions Merlins Bridge host Carew. The sides sat 5 th and 4 th in the table respectively and after 70 minutes the score was 0-0 until Brian Cutler netted for the Bridge. He added a further two goals along with one a piece for Macky Bowen and Eric James to give the Bridge a rather flattering 5-0 final score line. The only shock of the round saw second division New Hedges/Saundersfoot beat MHPC 4-0 with goals from Paul Hancock (2), Gary McNeilly and Stuart McKay, though considering their respective league positions, 13 th in division one compared to 3 rd in division two, it wasn’t that much of an upset.

The second round saw Neyland, another of the division one strugglers, crash out 5-0 at Newcastle Emlyn, with Roger Powell (2), Geraint James, Michael Davies and Philip Wynn netting for the north county side. There was controversy at Johnston where Milford United refused to play their second round match despite the referee Mr S Burnley insisting the ground was playable. A subsequent special league meeting on 11/01/79 resolved to expel the Milford side from the competition. Letterston, who were storming away in the fourth division, pushed Goodwick United all the way and in fact led 2-0 after 50 minutes thanks to goals from Billy Robb and Lyn Lewis. Dai Hughes then pulled one back and further goals from Adi John and Mike Robb in the last 20 minutes saw the homesters rewarded with a tie against another of their north county rivals Fishguard Sports.

The first of these quarter final ties at Goodwick saw the Fishguard keeper, Geraint Phillips, in fine form but he was eventually beaten by a Stewart Wilson header, only for Gethin Griffiths to equalise for the Sports. The replay resulted in another close affair though this time another Stewart Wilson header separated the two sides.

Newcastle Emlyn’s cup run came to an abrupt end when their planned home quarter final clash had to be switched to Kilgetty, where they crashed out 5-1 with Graham Jenkins scoring a hat trick. Johnston’s pitch was again at the centre of controversy when a bolder had to be dug up from the pitch before their game against Merlins Bridge went ahead. The Bridge took a two goal lead thanks to Brian Cutler and Tim Green before Hughie Brophy pulled one back for the home side, before sub Derek Roberts sealed the victory for the defending champions.

The two semis saw a 4-0 win for Merlins Bridge against Goodwick United with Eric James, Macky Bowen, Robert Taylor and Brian Cutler netting the goals, whilst the other semi at London Road proved to be a lot closer affair between Kilgetty and second division New Hedges/Saundersfoot. The first division side always had their noses in front leading 1-0, 3-1, and 4-2 at various stages of the game before Gary McNeilly made it 4-3 with eight minutes to go. Graham Jenkins (2), Alan Brindley and Steve Turner scored for Kilgetty with Spider Webb and Viv John netting the other two goals for the very young New Hedges side.

This resulted in a repeat of last year’s final and this time a solitary goal from Brian Cutler ten minutes from time decided the final.

Second Division Cup

The tie of the first round saw 2 nd placed St Ishmaels entertain 4 th placed Angle. Two goals early in the second half from Robert Cockburn and Lyndon Howells saw Tish move into the second round where they were involved in a humdinger of a tie against St Clears. Alan Proctor (two), John Sinnett, Bill Palmer and Steven Scale scored for the homesters with Roger Evans, Roger Hunt, Paul Wyatt and Malcolm Revill replying for the visitors in a 5-4 thriller.

In the semi-final goals from Lyndon Howells, Barry Warlow and Keith Guppy saw them easily overcome Fishguard Sports II and set up a final with RAF Brawdy who had beaten New Hedges/Saundersfoot 1-0 thanks to a Geoff Card goal in extra time.

Despite trawling through the records I have been unable to locate details of the final, which was won by St Ishmaels, and if anyone can help me in this matter I would be most grateful.

Third Division Cup

The tie of the first round saw Hakin United II take four games to overcome Clarbeston Road. Three consecutive draws, including a 3-3 draw in the very first game (Martin Davies, Greg John and Ray Harries for the Road, with Philip Finn, Roy Dawes, and John Kinsella replying for Hakin) resulting in the tie eventually being decided by a fourth game. Goals from John Kinsella, Mark Davies and Philip Finn proved enough to cancel out a lone Ray Harries goal for the Road.

They also needed a replay in the next round to overcome Narberth when goals from Keith Johnston and Donald Forrest saw them through to a semi-final tie with Johnston. Here, despite trailing 1-0 to a Terry Hazell goal, goals from Keith Johnston and Nigel Lewis saw them proceed to the final. To get there they had to play cup football for six consecutive weeks!

The other semi saw the top two sides in the league clash at Bush Camp, where despite Newcastle Emlyn going into a 1-0 lead, an own goal and one from Keith Cole saw Kilgetty advance to the fnal.

The final was very much a one sided affair with Ian Cannell (two), David Cope, Paul Griffiths, Roy Lewis and a Keith Cole penalty giving Kilgetty a very comfortable 6-0 win.

Fourth Division Cup

The fourth division cup provided no surprises other than the fact Pennar Robins II, who had finished second from bottom of the league, made it to the final. The draw had been kind to them in giving them a bye in the first round with their two successes coming against teams also in the bottom half of the division. In the semi they scored four goals all in extra time to overcome St Ishmaels II though there were no goalscorers available in the local press. In the other semi two Lyn Lewis goals and one each from Mike Delaney, Billy Robb and Nigel Nicholas saw Letterston overcome Neyland II for whom Malcolm Halsall scored.

The final played at London Road resulted in a comfortable win for Letterston thanks to two goals from Lyn Lewis and one from Will Nicholas.
