MAKING MEAD BY BRAD SMITH ead, which is a fermented beverage made from honey, is one of the oldest alcoholic M beverages. Vessels found in China dating back to 7000 B.C. have organic compounds consistent with fermented honey and rice. Mead was the revered “nectar of the gods” in ancient Greece and the “drink of kings” throughout history, though it has faded to obscurity in modern times. For homebrewers, mead is a great addition to complement your other fermented offerings. Many of your guests may have never tasted a good quality mead or melomel (fruit mead), but almost everyone enjoys this sweet beverage. Using some modern methods, mead is also relatively easy and quick to make, and you can use equipment you already have on hand for homebrewing. MODERN MEADMAKING TECHNIQUES When I started homebrewing back in 1987, the fermentation of mead was a very slow process, taking 12 to 18 Photo by Charles A. Parker/Images Plus Parker/Images A. • Online Appendix: Not for Publication the Competitive Impact of Vertical Integration by Multiproduct Firms
Online Appendix: Not For Publication The Competitive Impact of Vertical Integration by Multiproduct Firms Fernando Luco and Guillermo Marshall A Model Consider a market with NU upstream firms, NB bottlers, and a retailer. There are J inputs produced by the NU upstream firms and J final products produced by the NB bottlers. Each final product makes use of one (and only one) input product. All J final products are sold by the retailer. The set of products produced by each upstream i j firm i and bottler j are given by JU and JB, respectively. In what follows, we restrict j j to the case in which the sets in both fJBgj2NB and fJU gj2NU are disjoint (i.e., Diet Dr Pepper cannot be produced by two separate bottlers or upstream firms). We allow for a bottler to transact with multiple upstream firms (e.g., a PepsiCo bottler selling products based on PepsiCo and Dr Pepper SG concentrates). The model assumes that linear prices are used along the vertical chain. That is, linear prices are used both by upstream firms selling their inputs to bottlers and by bottlers selling their final products to the retailer. The price of input product j set by an upstream firm is given by cj; the price of final good k set by a bottler is wk; and the retail price of product j is pj. We assume that the input cost of upstream firms is zero, and the marginal costs of all other firms equals their input prices. The market share of product j, given a vector of retail prices p, is given by sj(p).

Rosario PT, PhD, CSFI, ATRIC* , Clare Hanrahan SPT , Lauren Basye SPT and Ashley Correa SPT a Texas Woman’s University, School of Physical Therapy, Dallas, Texas *Corresponding author Ph: (214) 689-7712 ; Email: [email protected] DOI: https://doi.org/10.34256/ijpefs2124 Received: 15-03-2021, Revised: 12-04-2021; Accepted: 16-04-2021; Published: 27-04-2021 Abstract: Over the past few years, energy drink consumption has increased among students aged 18–34 years. Energy drinks alter the balance, reduce blood flow and interfere with neuromuscular activation in the lower extremities. We attempted to determine which specific additive of three different drinks (red bull, rockstar, and bang) could contribute to changes in muscle activation of the ankle complex. Twenty healthy young adults aged 22–28 years were included in this study and allocated among 3 groups, red bull, rockstar, and bang. Neuromuscular data were obtained from EMG sensors positioned on the anterior tibialis and gastrocnemius before completing the four balance tasks. Each participant completed all the tasks before and after the 16-ounce Edrink. ANOVA was performed to compare the data before and after the beverage. Statistical significance was set at P <0.05. A trend was observed in red bull and bang groups revealing a faster anterior tibial activity and prolong activation for gastrocnemius. The rockstar group also showed a more rapid activation trend and shorter response during all tasks for the gastrocnemius.
