HEALTH & WELLNESS

Winter has made its presence felt on and off campus. And it brings with it the inevitable colds, coughs and other illnesses that mark this time of the year. But a few useful tips will not only help you get through the wintery months but also let you enjoy the season without compromising on your health. COMPETE Plus 15

1. Stay hydrated: Cold weather may mean that you are not thirsty very often. As a result, you may not drink enough water and that could put you at the risk of dehydration. But the dry weather can wreak havoc on your skin and kidneys. Besides, the body needs water to function properly, so try to drink as many liquids as possible. Drinking water can give your immune system a boost and prevent you from falling sick easily. You can also consider drinking hot beverages such as herbal teas or hot milk but don’t always choose caffeinated drinks such as coffee or hot chocolate as they can leave you further dehydrated. Always carry a bottle of water, keep it at your desk and your bedside. Staying well hydrated will give you more mental clarity, improve your digestion and also provide more energy.

2. Boost your fibre intake: Although winter season is the perfect time to indulge in heavy and rich foods, it’s also important to eat a lot of raw foods to keep up with the body’s fibre requirement. The easiest way to increase your fibre intake is through natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds.

3. Keep exercising: Don’t let the cold weather slow you down. If you love exercising outdoors early morning, then you may have to either change your exercise routine or start exercising indoors. Stay fit indoors with body weight exercises or gym equipment, if you like. You can also join yoga or aerobics classes. Be it exercising indoors or taking a walk at the park, stay active through the winter months to stay healthy.

4. Sleep well: A good night’s sleep is vital to good health. A lack of sleep can make you easily prone to cold, cough and flu. Getting at least seven hours of uninterrupted sleep every night for better concentration, to manage stress levels and prevent weight gain. Experts say that the body’s fever response and immunity improves with a good sleep.

5. Wash your hands regularly: Many diseases spread by not washing hands with soap and running water. Keeping hands clean is essential during all seasons. But since colds and coughs are common during winters, it becomes even more crucial to use the sanitizer more frequently during the cold months. However, using the sanitizer more frequently can lead to harsh chemicals making the hands rough. Consider the use of non-alcoholic sanitizers to prevent hands from getting too dry. Self respect

Self respect is our fundamental right for a great and happy life. Many people say it’s just like karma-- what you give is what you seek. It’s the power of our mankind. We all deserve self respect that’s why we are teaching this since decades in many ways just like by greeting someone you meet, by respecting elders, our land, God and so on.

Self respect is an experience of being deserving and feeling worthy as a human being. Self respect is a powerful force that allows us to perceive the approach of self approval - By Gaurangi Rajora waiting for none to appreciate our existence. Self awareness, self knowledge, self Sem-1, UWSL acceptance, and self discipline are the four milestones for developing self respect in life.

Let me tell you my own story…. I am a teenager, not having much knowledge of world but still love to get treated well by others. Do you know why? It’s because we all are human and have some default setting in our machine that is self respect. Sometimes to achieve self respect we assume that having an ego is good but it is as dangerous as cancer.

When I was in the 7th grade, some of my classmates used to bully me by making fun of my face, my language, my grades and they always used to make me feel inferior. After some time, even I accepted that I am a failure. This situation was getting worse and there was one teacher of mine who made me understand that self respect is not already within us but we need to conquer our fear, ego and have confidence on ourselves. Only then can we attain self respect.

We all know the current scenario of our society where there are many people who do not respect women but at the same time worship Goddess Durga. Many women go through this ill behaviour and it can be physical as well as mental torture.

If we don’t fight against ill treatment and not learn to respect ourselves, we cannot expect anyone else to do so.

Now is the right time to respect yourself!!

A volunteering experience at Raw Collaborative

One morning in my class, I get to see a poster of ‘Raw Collaborative Exhibition’, an amazing display of furniture elements by well-known designers, and an excellent opportunity for students to volunteer for them!

As an Interior Design student, I love to explore and venture into new opportunities, so without another thought, I decided to register to be a part of the event.

- By Shreya Patel Prof. Tanvi karia, who was the co-ordinator of the entire event, assigned me as a UG Sem-5, Interior Design UID volunteer for THE CASSA – a furniture design company under the leadership of Mr. Bhushan Saluja. As a volunteer, I was a part of the team that assembled the furniture, set up the display space, interact with the visitors & provide them with necessary information.

As a volunteer at Raw Collaborative, I got the chance to interact with many new & established designers in the industry, see their work & be a part of our heritage that is the Ahmedabad Mill Owner’s Association building.

The exhibit offered us a whole new perspective towards space, furniture design, display as an art form & management. Every designer had a unique language of design in their work & with many varieties available. It was a truly inspiring experience where we heard these designers discuss about their work methods & techniques, making us aware of how far we have to go.

Also, there were volunteers of other very reputed design institutes. Working together under the same roof, and sharing same responsibilities, made me feel very proud that we are highly competent and somewhere even better trained regarding the technical aspects and handling of materials.

My stint of volunteering has taught me that it takes many people of many talents to conduct an event of this scale, which has made me believe in my own abilities. It has given me self-confidence, taught to be patient & tolerant towards others, communication skills & rewards of team work over individual efforts.

I am grateful to the faculty team at UID who encouraged us to be a part of this event.

Workshop on Data Analytics by Dr. Sandipan Chattopadhyay

An insightful workshop on Data Analytics by Dr. Sandipan Chattopadhyay, Founder and CEO of Xelpmoc Design & Tech, was organized at Unitedworld School of Business Ahmedabad campus for the students of PGDM and BBA.

The workshop talked about the two fundamental subjects: Mathematics and Statistics as the basis for data analytics. It also shed a light that when mathematics focuses on absolute fixed answers to a problem, statistics predict the probability of certain events occurring, commonly known as patterns also highlighting the errors.

Dr. Sandipan Chattopadhyay also discussed the importance of gut feeling while using data as an analytical tool i.e. we can easily have data available but it requires a human mind and heart to use it in an effective way. The data that is generated today is mind-boggling. The data that was produced in a year’s time in the 1990s, today it is generated in an hour’s time. Interestingly, the big data was coined by the NASA for its astronomical explorations and research.

Certain interesting examples such as Walmart store’s use of data analytics to predict the inventory that needs to be stocked during natural disasters such as a hurricane, storm etc were discussed. Also, how Netflix’s famous soap House of cards used data analytics to predict the storyline and theme of the show. When one talks about the benefits, the issues are never given a miss. Since infinite data are floating across mediums, it also brings issues of data wastages, security, and bad data. The example of Google was a hot topic as it records each and every personal data. The biggest concern today relating to data is that as a person I should have a control on the data which I may or may not want to share and companies need to strike the balance in it while collecting and analyzing data. With all the data that is available today only 0.8% of data is actually utilized by us. Data analytics is also a topic that is discussed as a contemporary specialization but in fact, it has always been present but never used. With so much of data in hand, manipulation of data to influence customers and privacy is a big concern today and the biggest focus of the workshop was how the required data has to be made available for the public for their benefit. For e.g. as a customer, I also need to know what a company knows about me and what is my buying pattern, which I may have never observed before. If the data analytics is efficiently used in areas of education, healthcare, agriculture, and the lifestyle it can reap huge benefits not only for a customer but for the country as well. It ended on a thoughtful note that data analytics helps to find a logical reason in every illogical situation and if used correctly can help consumers and country alike. It was followed by a very interactive round of question and answers. COMPETE Plus 75 EVENTS COMPETE Plus 76 EVENTS

The design connoisseur from the Arts University Bournemouth, UK, Ms. Sarah Charles, divided the students into groups for the project and elucidated her ideology for the task i.e. "No 'I' in team, let go of your ego, no idea is a bad idea". Various problem-solving techniques for specific design processes were also briefed by Ms. Charles. After an intense brainstorming session, each group came up with themes such as elegance, nature etc on which they designed their products using the waste materials that were provided before the task. The final products were nothing less than awe-inspiring and Ms. Charles was totally flabbergasted to see such amazing creativity of the students. They didn't only designed useful yet sustainable products out of scrap but also conveyed social messages which they illustrated in front of the mentor of today's workshop. Australia’s Dr. John Flutter delivers lecture at KSD

Imagination is not useless, in-fact it is used less. But as dentists we have disproved this as we have an ocean of current trends to which we are eagerly ready to adapt. With this in mind, the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry at Karnavati University curated a CDE lecture on ‘Myofunctional Orthodontics’ by Australian speaker Dr John Flutter on November 27, 2017. With 40 years of experience in the field of orthodontics , Dr Flutter wanted to stress on the importance of MYOBRACE as part of Myofunctional treatment. There was an amazing response from all pediatric dentists, orthodontists as well as general dental practitioners leading to a total of 50 delegates for the event.Dr Flutter’s exciting lecture opened new pathways. His detailed research along with numerous case reports showed the importance of early intervention for excellent and long term esthetic benefits in kids and adults. A step by step treatment planning approach using MYOBRACE initiated new boundaries of convenient and long lasting solution for malocclusion problems. Along with this an interactive session with live demonstration on a patient was also organized, which helped in better understanding. There was an outstanding feedback from every delegate which has lifted the spirits and encouraged to continue the flame of knowledge and spread its brightness to the benefit of the field of dentistry. KSD celebrates Children’s Day

Across the world this day is celebrated on the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to spread the awareness of children’s needs, rights and development. It is said that the purest form of God is found in a child. A child is innocent, without any greed (except chocolates), and in their most crucial stage of their life. In this phase they learn the basic quality of a good/bad human being. The personality they develop and rise to become is much dependent on a person’s childhood. Hence, it is necessary to let a child feel safe, nourished and taken care of in their early days.

Karnavati University had organized an event for a child to experience the most of the day as their own. Encouraging them to express their emotions in ways that come to them naturally, such as Dance, Drawing, Singing or in any form that they would be pleased to. The man himself, Pt. Nehru said “Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow.” But to make that happen, we have to make the world a better place for a child to look forward to. For an underprivileged child it is never about gifts or birthdays or holidays, it is about finding happiness in each and every small thing they get. It can be hidden in a small packet of biscuit, a tiny candy or even in a genuine and caring smile. Each part of our institute including the staff and the students actively participated in such an event to make this day not only worthwhile for a child but also educate him about his basic needs.

Oral hygiene is a very important factor in a child’s life. What to eat or drink, how to maintain their oral hygiene, these factors affect their health in present as well as future. Usually we see that a child is afraid of a dentist.. But if we make it a fun visit for a child, like they are going to their favourite uncle’s place for a regular get together, wouldn’t they enjoy coming to us and what better than a child’s smile when you know you are the reason for it. We aim the child to be happy and healthy, but not by force or trying too hard. We aim for them to understand the value of this education and learn it with a joyful attitude.

The Department of Pedodontics, Karnavati School Of Dentistry, planed to make this day, 14th November 2017, precious for a child to realise how precious he/she is to this world. We wish to make them educated, happy and healthy. We are not only providing the theoretical knowledge to the child but also the practical environment where they feel a positive and pleasant atmosphere. Last but not the least, we wish to bring out the innocence in each and every one of us to let a child know how amazing this world can be. It can be creative, filled with love and laughter with all the care they require.

This day, we walked an extra mile. This day, we wished to be the reason for every child’s smile. COMPETE Plus 86 EVENTS COMPETE Plus 87 EVENTS
