Eymet Mairie

Without a doubt, the beginning of this new term of office has not been kind to us. Following on from the first confinement, we have endured a summer which we could only describe as being frustrating. With so many events, let us remember, which in normal times, by their number and by their quality are our hallmark, that we have been forced to scale down, postpone or even cancel. The 750th anniversary of the Bastide & the Félibrée being amongst them.

Would we be able to say that Confinement Part 2 had a certain number of “advantages”? Well, yes, as this time we were not taken by surprise. Life did not come to a complete standstill even if it was a challenging and an alarming time, we were able to continue working. Excepting, of course, the so called “non-essential” shops which unfortunately were forced to close. But, I have also noticed the communal spirit of togetherness, with all those selfless acts which have eased the distress of the most vulnerable amongst us.

Continue working did I mention? Well very much yes. You will find in the following pages a number of articles and information on actions which have already been achieved by our Commune’s municipal team which is to say a number of promises made during the election campaign have been acted upon – or are about to be. Sometimes, in the face of some difficulties due to the pandemic. I am just as pleased to underline that in this context, two activities organised by the Mairie in conjunction with Associations, have been a great success: Heritage Days and Pink October see more on pages 2 & 3

During the Confinement Part 2, we have given a great deal of thought to the future of our Bastide and we applied to be part of the Programme “Small Town of tomorrow” launched by the government. In fact, we were successful, and our commune has just been selected. Excellent news which is also a form of recognition and will encourage us to be on the front foot. The programme offers us wonderful opportunities with regard to works and finance facilities. It will allow us to view our Town Project in a new way and, bit by bit, to put into effect a number of projects : an Eco-zone at the Old Station, an area dedicated to related projects with a link to protection of the A Word from the Mayor environment (water treatment plant, Waste Disposal Centre [Tip], composting area Jérôme Bétaille …..) refurbishment of a number of sites (Marius Lavaud Retirement Home and the old Veal market [covered parking space] in particular or even improvements to the roadways, quaysides and gardens…. “On the Front Foot” In the meantime, let us hope we can find, once again, as soon as possible, a Bastide full of life and be able to start (with complete freedom) to take the time to appreciate Eymet As we came out of Confinement Part 2, at the end of November, in line with the government’s advice, we have made the decision to cancel the Toast of Friendship, which traditionally heralds the New Year, with a firework display shooting skywards from the Chateau. As regards the annual Address by the Municipality, it is impossible to organise this for the beginning of January 2021. So, there we are, unavoidably, frustrated in our wishes to meet up and ….. to celebrate! Two days dedicated to our Heritage in all its various forms were organised on 19th & 20th September by Eymet Mairie in partnership with the Historical & Archaeological Studies Committee, the Arts Pallet and The Tourist Office. Under the name of Eymet, my “Open Air Workshop” the painting competition brought together 22 participants including 14 children and youngsters. We and keen to stress the generous contribution of Eymet businesses enabling us to reward the participants. “The Princess is Unwell”, this pleasant storytelling stroll moving between Eymet Chateau and the Chateau de Pile with about 100 people taking part.

A dozen volunteers were involved with cleaning up the Touron in Rouquette as part of the “I love my Heritage” eco-citizen workshop.

110 participants divided in groups of 10 were enthusiastically interested in visits (both real and virtual) in the Chateau Keep culminating in the Bastide with families and groups of friends invited to “Look up” and take in the “Hidden Heritage of Eymet”

The daylong events were very much appreciated by those taking part and this experience will obviously be repeated next year

Que fasem per la Felibrejada ?

After the presentation of the Festival Queen, Victoria, and the official poster in the Cultural Centre at the beginning of March, the organisation of the Félibrée in the Eymet Region came to a halt due to the confinement. The organising committee, Lo Bornat dau Perigòrd and the Eymet Mairie decided to postpone this major Occitan Cultural Festival, a symbol of the Dordogne, until July 2021.

Despite the situation which became complicated for all, the preparation for this event was in an advanced state. In addition to the weekly meeting of the committee and different sub-committees starting in November 2019, a number of events had taken place; workshops for the manufacture of garlands, traditional dance workshops in the sports hall on Thursday evenings, a monthly round of conferences at the library (Occitan Culture in Périgord), a seamstresses workshop and an initial festive get-together in Razac d’Eymet, a crêpes evening at the end of February, traditional soup and a traditional dance organised by the Catering and Cultural Events sub-committees with over 150 people taking part.

It can be said that the preparations for the Félibrée have put in motion an energetic local setup where social links have intensified between all the committed volunteers to showcase the economic and cultural values of the Eymet region; we are keen to express our gratitude to the commune of Eymet as well as the other involved communes, for their financial and technical assistance. We hope that, in the very near future, this formidable community adventure will be able to resume you can add your cornerstone to this project by becoming involved in this major Festival which is “La Félibrée”

The Year 2020 will enter the history books as the year of the global pandemic, the economy put on hold and the questioning of the way we live our lives.

Social distancing, hygiene rules, confinement, isolation have become the norms for us all over a number of weeks, even months.

The discovery of a vaccine to protect us will surely lead to our salvation in the coming weeks.

This crisis, which is without precedence, has highlighted the primary role with regards to the efficiency and the speed of reaction of the authorities at communal and departmental levels.

In these troubled times, these difficult hours we must come together as one, to unite and to fight back.

React speedily to look after the most fragile amongst us, help those who drive forward our local economy and maintain an indispensable link in a democratic society.

Nevertheless, life does not come to a halt. We must continue to be careful, follow the hygiene rules and take care of each other.

The elected officials in the group “Eymet, A Future All Together” (Eymet un avenir tous ensemble) would like to wish each one of you the most enjoyable Christmas possible and a Very happy New Year 2021

2014 – 2018: A DUTY TO REMEMBER IN EYMET A collection of texts read out during the “Voices of 14”

Organised as part of the 14-18 centenary, four evenings of readings by the Voices of 14 (Voix de 14) allowed us to better understand the incredible difficulties men and women had to live through and survive during this tragic period.

We owe the Poilus *First World War soldiers in the trenches) a duty to remember which began as soon as the conflict ended with a prodigious wave of commemorations and installations of war memorials and which must, absolutely continue forever. From this aspect the texts read during these Voix de14 have clearly contributed to communicating these, so, so painful, pages of our history.
