The competition was a celebration of the centenary of CONMEBOL and the America's Cup, and was the first America's Cup held outside south America. The tournament was a memorable version of the America's Cup (not the 45th edition). It was held as part of an agreement between CONMEBOL (Confederation of South American Football) and CONCACAF (Confederation of Football for North and Central America and the Caribbean) as a special edition between the usual four-year cycle, and featured an expanded field of 16 teams (increase relative to the usual 12), with all ten teams from CONMEBOL and six teams from CONCACAF. Despite the fact that the tournament is the official iteration of the America's Cup, the winner will not receive an invitation to the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 because of the memorable nature of the tournament, although the eventual winners of Chile have already qualified thanks to their victory in 2015. Chile became the fourth country to win at least two consecutive CONMEBOL titles, after Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. Argentina, meanwhile, lost their third consecutive final in a major tournament, after germany lost at the 2014 World Cup and Chile at the 2015 Copa America. Considering Argentina's losses against Brazil (2004 Copa America, 2007 Copa America and 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup) and Denmark (1995 King Fahd Cup), this is Argentina's seventh lost final since their last triumph at the 1993 Copa America. In a plan in February 2012, Alfredo Hawit, then acting president of CONCACAF, announced that the competition was expected to take place in 2016 as a celebration of the centenary of CONMEBOL. CONMEBOL President Nicholas Leoz said: Hopefully we can organize a big event because we are 100 years old and we want to celebrate a great one. The tournament was announced by CONMEBOL on October 24, 2012 and confirmed by CONCACAF on May 1, 2014. On September 26, 2014, FIFA announced that the tournament had been added to the INTERNATIONAL FIFA Match Calendar, which means that clubs must called for a contest. The tournament took place in June 2016 together with Euro 2016. On October 23, 2015, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL and the host association of the U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed that the tournament was taking place as originally intended. On each side are raised and polished images of the United North and South America, dedicated to the first America's Cup, which is held outside South America. Instead of the traditional wooden base, which has the names of all past winners, the basis of the Centenario commemorative trophy includes 16 zones engraved with the names of all 16 nations. Other details include: CONMEBOL and CONCACAF logos (two confederations with representatives in the tournament), the years 1916-2016 (in honor of the 100th anniversary of CONMEBOL and the Copa del Siglo), as well as the phrases La Copa del Siglo (Cup of the Century) and the Unification of America. Host of choice Luis Chiriboga, president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation said that United and Mexico was the potential hosts of at least one stage of the competition. Havil preferred that the competition be held in the United States for financial reasons, stating that the market is in the United States, the stadiums are in the United States, people are in the United States. On May 1, 2014, it was announced that the tournament would be held in the United States from June 3 to June 26, 2016. The decision to choose the United States as host came under criticism from The President of the Uruguayan Football Association, Wilmar Valdez, on 7 June 2016, who complained that the United States was a country where they did not feel football and that it brings problems. According to him, the complaint was voiced after Uruguay's defeat by Mexico, in favor of which, in his words, this event was biased. Shortly before the game, the Chilean national anthem was played in error instead of the Uruguayan national anthem. On January 8, 2015, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL announced 24 U.S. metropolitan areas that showed interest in hosting matches. The stadiums were chosen at the end of the bidding process, with a minimum capacity of 50,000. The final list of sites, which is expected to be 8 to 13, was due to be announced in May 2015. However, the list has not been published, and speculation as to whether the tournament will move forward has emerged as Interpol received red notices for former presidents of the CONMEBOL and CONCACAF confederations in connection with a FIFA corruption case in 2015, including allegations that they received significant bribes in connection with a $112.5 million broadcasting deal. CONMEBOL officials have expressed a desire to move forward in this event despite the scandal. However, there has been criticism for not including Uruguay, which has won two World Cups and has been the leader of the America's Cup with 15 championships, or Chile, who have been America's Cup champions going into the tournament. The draw took place on February 21, 2016 at 19:30 EST, at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City.

It was a sweet return to the venue for Brazil, who were humiliated 7-1 at the same ground by Germany in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup. Neymar’s landmark strike was sandwiched by a spectacular effort from Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and a second-half finish from China-based midfielder Paulinho. The win was a remarkable fifth consecutive qualifying victory under the reign of new coach Tite, who took over following the sacking of Dunga in June after Brazil’s Copa America Centenario debacle, when they failed to advance from the group stage. Brazil now have 24 points from 11 games, one clear of second-placed Uruguay who have 23 points. The Brazilians are six points clear of third-placed Colombia and seven points clear of Ecuador and Chile, who are level on 17 points after 11 games. Argentina meanwhile are languish- ing outside the qualifying places in sixth with 16 points. The two-time world champions-who have taken just two points from their past four qualifiers-now face a crucial game at home to Colombia next Tuesday which they must win to avoid falling further off the pace.

Abstract This paper examines the interrelated issues of time and money in club and international football. Specifically, the focus is on small Caribbean countries and territories that are rich in talent, but poor in opportunities. In the past decade, several professional teams in the Caribbean have played in the minor league system in North America, but have been stifled by several factors. This paper argues that the creation of a ‘Caribbean division’ that plays in either the North American Soccer League (NASL) or United Soccer League (USL)-Pro league would enrich and develop teams and players from all parties involved, and they would be more competitive in FIFA World Cup qualifying. The key ingredient is correctly timing such a venture. The guilty pleas of four individual defendants and two corporate defendants were also unsealed today. The defendants charged in the indictment include high-ranking officials of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the organization responsible for the regulation and promotion of soccer worldwide, as well as leading officials of other soccer governing bodies that operate under the FIFA umbrella. The defendants Jeffrey Webb and Jack Warner – the current and former presidents CONCACAF, the continental confederation under FIFA headquartered in the United States – are among the soccer officials charged with racketeering and bribery offenses. The defendants also include U.S. and South American sports marketing executives who are alleged to have systematically paid and agreed to pay well over $150 million in bribes and kickbacks to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to international soccer tournaments.
