Executive Summary Heritage conservation in Australia has traditionally focused on monumental masonry structures and public buildings. Timber heritage conservation has attracted comparatively less attention within the heritage profession. There is a renewed interest in conserving industrial heritage, which features many Australian native timbers and unique construction methods. Scarcity of quality timber and lack of tradesmen with traditional carpentry skills pose unique challenges to timber heritage conservation activities. Historic timber structures were often constructed of old growth native timbers that are becoming very scarce.
