There are no prospects for re-activated train services along any of the nominated routes. Rail Trails for NSW urges the State Government to seek co-contributions from the Australian Government for the projects. The building of these tourist trails will provide: • Fiscal stimulus of up to $3.3 million for feasibility and other pre-construction studies and planning • Fiscal stimulus during the trail construction phase of up to $271,250,000 • Upon completion; o All 14 regional trails will generate additional local visitor spending estimated conservatively at $27 million p.a. building to $74 million p.a. o Steadily create up to 111 jobs building to 297 or more local jobs as visitor numbers grow o facilitate new business and employment opportunities in their host regions o provide community, health and exercise resources for locals o enable social benefits by generating community resilience, hope and optimism o stimulus of up to $2.75 million via marketing and promotion activities These 11 additional rail trails warranting immediate attention (Table 1). -

Executive Summary Heritage conservation in Australia has traditionally focused on monumental masonry structures and public buildings. Timber heritage conservation has attracted comparatively less attention within the heritage profession. There is a renewed interest in conserving industrial heritage, which features many Australian native timbers and unique construction methods. Scarcity of quality timber and lack of tradesmen with traditional carpentry skills pose unique challenges to timber heritage conservation activities. Historic timber structures were often constructed of old growth native timbers that are becoming very scarce. -

Newsletter December 2017 Our Mission Statement: We wish to put the disused Monaro rail way line to productive use as a recreational trail for cycling and in doing so boost tourism, the economy and the well being of the region. At the same time, we wish to preserve the old rail buildings, bridges and the Colinton tunnel that are part of the Monaro rail history NSW NSW Govt and rail trail tourism. Government handling of rail trail development has been less than heartening. In 2014 it allocated $50m for rail trails, however all but $45m was used for regional airport development and the remaining $5 million was allocated for use on the Tumbarumba to Rosewood rail trail. That money remains unused as the government administration moves at a glacial pace and construction of this project approved in July 2015 is yet to commence. Somewhat more heartening to see is new work by policy writers and planners within the NSW Govt who are currently preparing a vision statement on how unused transport infrastructure can be used to support tourism growth. The framework for this vision includes finding alternative uses for currently unused assets in road, marine and rail infrastructure. Regional cycle tourism is specifically mentioned in relation to the statement “NSW has 3100 km of non- operational rail lines that can be developed for social and economic benefits for regional NSW” The vision paper “ Future Transport 2056” has been available to review at https://future.transport.nsw.gov.au/react-feedback/supporting-plans/tourism-transport- plan/11-transport-infrastructure/ The NSW electorate of Monaro tends to be a closely contested seat. -

Chaplin. Chaplin had bound letters, memoranda and manuscripts of the poet John Shaw Neilson into volumes, grouped according to content, and in the same year had published a guide to the collection. One of these volumes contained Shaw Neilson's autobiography, transcribed from his dictation by several amanuenses, who compensated for his failing sight. -

A young country— and how often that is used to excuse or to com mend!—is in great need of a past, to anchor, to mellow, to give it penetration in depth. The link that we need with the AustraUan earth has been forged in dust and heat, triumph and failure, by the pioneers of the city and the bush. History is the remem bered past, and old buildings are visible history. A country's architecture is a near-perfect record of its history. Every building captures in physical form the climate and resources of a country's geography, the social, economic, technological and political conditions of its society and the moral, philo sophical, aesthetic and spiritual values of its people. Every building records, describes and explains the time and the place in which it was built. "MORE HISTORY THAN A LIBRARY OF BOOKS" That our old buildings do not date back to the Norman Conquest does not make them less valuable to us. They are as old in proportion to our swiftly-moving history. In less than two centuries, starting from as near scratch as can be achieved in the modern world, Australia, for good or iU, has caught up with the present. Certainly no one else wiU care about it or guard it if we do not. To know it is part of our self-knowledge.
