  • A's News Clips, Saturday, August 6, 2011 Oakland A's Lose Fourth
A’s News Clips, Saturday, August 6, 2011 Oakland A's lose fourth straight game By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- At least the A's lineup looked different Friday, as shortstop Cliff Pennington and right fielder David DeJesus returned to action against the Tampa Bay Rays. The final outcome? All too familiar to manager Bob Melvin, after the A's lost 8-4 at Tropicana Field for their fourth straight defeat to start a nine- game road trip. "We dig ourselves some holes on the road that we have to come back from, and that's not a good recipe for success," Melvin said. The A's fell behind 4-0 before Coco Crisp's two-run homer pulled them to within two runs in the top of the sixth. Then the Rays struck for three runs in the bottom half against reliever Craig Breslow to break things open, 7-2. Oakland fell to 7-30 in its past 37 road games. Their 18-39 overall road record is the major leagues' worst based on winning percentage. However, the A's were happy to welcome back Pennington, who missed two games after being diagnosed with Bell's palsy on Monday night, and DeJesus, who missed four games with a right thumb injury. Pennington had an RBI triple in the A's two-run ninth, with the outcome well-decided. He is still feeling minor effects from Bell's palsy, a nerve condition that causes partial facial paralysis. He still doesn't have full movement on the left side of his face, and he will remain on medication for now.

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s have designated outfielder Andrew Brown for assignment. Davis began the season with the New York Mets and was hitting .208 with a home run and five RBI in 12 games before being dealt to Pittsburgh April 18 for pitchers Zack Thornton and Blake Taylor. He hit .235 in 131 games with the Pirates and batted .233 with 11 home runs and 51 RBI in 143 games overall. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter added 63 walks for a .344 on-base percentage. Davis was originally the Mets first round pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and is a .240 career hitter with 78 home runs and 270 RBI in 585 games five seasons. He had his best season in 2012 when he batted .227 with 32 home runs and 90 RBI in 156 games with New York. • A's News Clips, Thursday, April 12, 2012
A’s News Clips, Sunday, April 15, 2012 Light-hitting A's stay course against Mariners, fall 4-0 By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune The A's have treated their fans to a pleasant surprise with their ability to bop the ball over the fence on occasion. That alone won't guarantee they are a better offensive team this season. Case in point was Saturday night's 4-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The A's mustered just five hits and put only three runners into scoring position against Hector Noesi (1-1), who went eight innings before Brandon League closed it out with a hitless ninth for Seattle. The A's, 4-5 on the young season, still have a chance to win this three-game series Sunday afternoon. But so far, there just aren't enough players up and down the A's lineup stringing hits together. "We're just pressing a little bit, and that's contagious," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "We need to score some runs early." A's starter Tommy Milone (1-1) didn't pitch poorly. He gave up four runs over six innings, but with no offensive support, his margin for error was zero. Through his first two starts with the A's, Milone has received a total of one run of support. "You try to keep the team in the ballgame, and it feels like you can't give up any runs," Milone said. "It's hard. As a pitcher you wanna go out and throw up zeroes.

  • A's News Clips, Saturday, July 30, 2011 Minnesota Twins Defeat
A’s News Clips, Saturday, July 30, 2011 Minnesota Twins defeat Oakland A's 9-5 By Carl Steward, Oakland Tribune Gio Gonzalez, the A's best pitcher most of the year and their lone All-Star, has hit his first major bump in the road this season. Gonzalez labored through 51/3 innings Friday night, gave up nine hits and five runs and committed a throwing error as the Minnesota Twins whipped Oakland 9-5 at O.co Coliseum. Gonzalez (9-8) has lost three of his past four starts and allowed at least five runs in all three losses. The nine hits allowed matched his season high. He walked three and struck out five and ended his 112-pitch night with a bases-loaded walk. "I'm in one of those streaks, but it's part of baseball, everybody goes through it," Gonzalez said. "I'll just have to put this one behind me, keep working hard and get ready for my next start." So what was the problem against the Twins? "I'd say more my command," he said. "I'd get ahead of them, then I'd fall behind on them. I have to get back to facing one batter at a time, getting one out at a time and keep pushing forward." Gonzalez's struggles offset a huge night for A's left fielder Josh Willingham, who hit his 14th and 15th home runs -- his first multiple-homer game with Oakland -- and drove in all five runs with a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the eighth.

  • A's News Clips, Friday, July 8, 2011 Fan Dies After Fall During Texas
A’s News Clips, Friday, July 8, 2011 Fan dies after fall during Texas Rangers' win over Oakland A's By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune ARLINGTON, Texas -- All was quiet in the A's clubhouse Thursday night, but not because of a 6-0 loss to the Texas Rangers. Players were visibly shaken after a fan sitting in the left-field bleachers died from injuries suffered in a 20-foot fall during the second inning at Rangers Ballpark. The fan was later identified as Brownwood, Texas, firefighter Shannon Stone by several news sources. Several A's relievers were in the visitors' bullpen located in left-center, not far from where the incident happened. Oakland's Conor Jackson lined a foul ball into the left-field corner that ricocheted into fair territory. Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton retrieved the ball and tossed it up to a male fan sitting in the first row behind the out-of-town scoreboard that's built into the left-field wall. The man lunged forward, and as he caught the ball with his bare hands, tumbled over a railing and fell headfirst to the concrete below. The area where the man fell was behind the 14-foot-high scoreboard and out of sight from the field. Shaken A's reliever Brad Ziegler, who was consoled by his family members outside the clubhouse after the game, said the man was conscious as he was taken out of the stadium. "It was me and (Craig) Breslow and (Joey) Devine," Ziegler said while standing at his locker, his eyes still bloodshot.
