    MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

The A’s also announced that they did not tender contracts to first baseman Kyle Blanks and outfielder Andrew Brown. Rodriguez appeared in seven games over two stints with the A’s last year after missing the 2013 season following Tommy John surgery. He had a win, a 1.00 ERA and .129 opponents batting average. Rodriguez spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Sacramento where went 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA in 38 relief appearances. Davis was acquired from Pittsburgh Nov. 23 in an exchange of international bonus slots. He began the season with the New York Mets and was hitting .208 with a home run and five RBI in 12 games before being dealt to Pittsburgh April 18 for pitchers Zack Thornton and Blake Taylor. Davis hit .235 in 131 games with the Pirates and batted .233 with 11 home runs and 51 RBI in 143 games overall. Blanks was designated for assignment last Friday as a result of the trade with the Toronto.

Taliban fighters launched rock- ets Saturday at airports in Kanda- har and Herat, two of the coun- try’s largest cities and busiest eco- nomic centers. The attacks dis- rupted commercial travel, though flights in and out of Herat subse- quently resumed. “There was a large blast and the whole room started shaking,” said Massoud Ahmad Pashtun, the chief of Kandahar airport, who was present at the time of the at- tack. He said three rockets landed within seconds of each other and ‘I got lucky’ damaged one of the runways. The attacks mark a potential turning point in the Afghan con- flict. With Monday's 11-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics, the Angels finished the month with an American League-worst 19 losses and a major league-low 86 runs scored.

PETERSBURG, Fla. -- At least the A's lineup looked different Friday, as shortstop Cliff Pennington and right fielder David DeJesus returned to action against the Tampa Bay Rays. The final outcome? All too familiar to manager Bob Melvin, after the A's lost 8-4 at Tropicana Field for their fourth straight defeat to start a nine- game road trip. "We dig ourselves some holes on the road that we have to come back from, and that's not a good recipe for success," Melvin said. The A's fell behind 4-0 before Coco Crisp's two-run homer pulled them to within two runs in the top of the sixth. Then the Rays struck for three runs in the bottom half against reliever Craig Breslow to break things open, 7-2. Oakland fell to 7-30 in its past 37 road games. Their 18-39 overall road record is the major leagues' worst based on winning percentage. However, the A's were happy to welcome back Pennington, who missed two games after being diagnosed with Bell's palsy on Monday night, and DeJesus, who missed four games with a right thumb injury. Pennington had an RBI triple in the A's two-run ninth, with the outcome well-decided. He is still feeling minor effects from Bell's palsy, a nerve condition that causes partial facial paralysis. He still doesn't have full movement on the left side of his face, and he will remain on medication for now.
