  • Eco-Rehabilitation of Tribal Villages Through Innovative Design in Water
Eco-Rehabilitation of tribal villages through Innovative design in water management using Ice-stupa, promoting Farm-stay tourism and passive solar heating system- Joint Inititative of Tribal Affairs and Secmol in Leh The “roof of the world”, the metaphorical description for the physio-geographic region encompassing the Indian Himalayas, is the site of vast freshwater glaciers and the primary source of the major Asian rivers that have sustained life since early human civilisations have inhabited the area. In modern times, these freshwater glaciers are still the primary source of water, and thus the welfare, for over a billion Asian people, especially for the tribal communities of Ladakh who have been perpetually dependent on glacial meltwater in the high-altitude desert. Lying on the northerly fringes of the Himalayan watershed, Ladakh is characterised by distinct geographical and climatic features. Known as a cold desert, Ladakh covers area of 96701 km2 and with an average elevation of 3000 m, having annual annual precipitation100 mm, and extreme temperatures ranges (-30 to 30 Co). Much of the province remains in a cold spell from October-March, with only a third of the year left for agrarian purposes. The villages in the region are settled in small oases in the barren desert, on the banks of a stream, or amongst springs utilising the summertime meltwater. Regardless of its ecosystem services and historical context, reckless human interventions and global climate change have impacted the region immeasurably, in particular due to the escalated rate of warming at higher altitudes. Currently, Himalayan glaciers are receding at an alarming rate, from a few to tens of meters annually.

  • Changing Land Use and Water Management in a Ladakhi Village of Northern India
Available online at www.sciencedirect.com ScienceDirect Agriculture and Agricultural Science Procedia 5 ( 2015 ) 60 – 66 1st International Conference on Asian Highland Natural Resources Management, AsiaHiLand 2015 Changing Land Use and Water Management in a Ladakhi Village of Northern India aӒ b Shinya Takeda , Takayoshi Yamaguchi aGraduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University, Kyoto 606-8501, Japan bThe National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, Tsukuba 305-8604, Japan ABSTRACT Focusing on agro-pastoralism and the change in farmland use by the highlanders in Ladakh, Domkhar valley in lower Ladakh was selected as the research site. Domkhar valley has a total population of 1,269 people and 193 households and is divided into three villages based on their locations: Domkhar Do (lower village, 3,000 to 3,100 meters altitude), Domkhar Barma (middle village, 3,400 to 3,500 meters altitude), and Domkhar Gonma (upper village, 3,600 to 4,000 meters altitude). There is a hamlet called Kuramric at the highest point of the upper village at 4,100 meters. The villagers release their livestock in the pastures in the U- shaped valley located above Kuramric. Barley is the main crop cultivated in all three villages. Wheat can be cultivated in the lower and middle villages, but not in the upper village. We created a list of households in the three villages in Domkhar valley before conducting interviews. We then created a map showing irrigation canals, the land ownership and usage of each household from the GeoEye-1 satellite images taken in September and November 2010. We elucidated the change in land use and water management based on this map of irrigation canals, land ownership and usage along with the interviews and on-site observations.

This in turn triggered raging floods and landslides. Hundreds of homes were destroyed and people marooned. More than 200 mud-built houses were washed away. The district hospital is submerged and the radio station damaged. Electricity cables and telecommunication pylons have been damaged or destroyed. The affected area stretches from the village of Phayang on the Rohtang-Leh highway to Nimoo on the Leh- Srinagar highway (a distance of more than 150 km). Five villages were severely affected in the sudden downpour and flash floods, including Choglumsar and Shapoo. Leh town was among the worst-hit areas. Leh has a population of 117,000, most of whom are taking shelter in the higher mountains around them. Over 200 people are still reported to be missing from the worst-hit village of Choglumsar, 13km from Leh city, where nearly all homes were washed away. Phayang, 15km from Leh, was also badly hit and is completely submerged. ACT Alliance members Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) and the Lutheran World Federation/Lutheran World Service India Trust (LWF/LWSIT) are responding to this emergency.

  • The Rock Art of Upper Tibet and Ladakh
The Rock Art of Upper Tibet and Ladakh Inner Asian cultural adaptation, regional differentiation and the ‘Western Tibetan Plateau Style’ Laurianne Bruneau & John Vincent Bellezza I. An introduction to the rock art of Upper Tibet and Ladakh his paper examines common thematic and esthetic features discernable in the rock art of the western portion of the T Tibetan plateau.1 This rock art is international in scope; it includes Ladakh (La-dwags, under Indian jurisdiction), Tö (Stod) and the Changthang (Byang-thang, under Chinese administration) hereinafter called Upper Tibet. This highland rock art tradition extends between 77° and 88° east longitude, north of the Himalayan range and south of the Kunlun and Karakorum mountains. [Fig.I.1] This work sets out the relationship of this art to other regions of Inner Asia and defines what we call the ‘Western Tibetan Plateau Style’. The primary materials for this paper are petroglyphs (rock carvings) and pictographs (rock paintings). They comprise one of the most prolific archaeological resources on the Western Tibetan Plateau. Although pictographs are quite well distributed in Upper 1 Bellezza would like to heartily thank Joseph Optiker (Burglen), the sole sponsor of the UTRAE I (2010) and 2012 rock art missions, as well as being the principal sponsor of the UTRAE II (2011) expedition. He would also like to thank David Pritzker (Oxford) and Lishu Shengyal Tenzin Gyaltsen (Gyalrong Trokyab Tshoteng Gön) for their generous help in completing the UTRAE II. Sponsors of earlier Bellezza expeditions to survey rock art in Upper Tibet include the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation (New York) and the Asian Cultural Council (New York).

CENSUS OF INDIA 1981 SERIES-8 JAMMU & KASHMIR Special Paper of 1981 VILLAGE / TOWN WISE POPULATION AND SCHEDULED CASTE POPULATION ABDUL GANI Joint Dil ector of Census Operations Jammu and Kashmir PREFACE This is a special publication presenting the 1981 Census total popu lation and scheduled caste population of the State, districts and Tehsils down to village/urban block level to meet the requirement of data users interested in figures of population at village/ward level. This requirement could have been served by the 1981 District Census Handbooks which contain comprehensive basic information about populatIon by sex including literacy and work partici pation but the printing and publication of these handbooks which is the respon sibility of the State government will take some time. Until these handbooks are published, it is hoped that the present volume will serve a useful purpose to feed the urgent requirement of all data users. The Director of Census Opserations Shri A. H. Khan, under whose guidance the entire census operations were carried out, deserve all cred it for the success of the operations but he had to leave the organisation because of superannuation before this paper could be made ready for the press. I must record my deepest sense of gratitude to Shri V.S. Verma, Registrar General, India and Shri V.P. Pandey, Joint Registrar General, IndIa for their valuable guidance and for having agreed to bring out this specIal paper even in deviation of the approved census publications programme and arrange for its printing on a priority basis through the Printing Divi~ion of the Registrar General's Office under the supervision of Shri Tirath Dass, Joint Director.
