EDERf •Department of Botany, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045-2106; and t Department of Biological Sciences, Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois 62026-1651 The relationship between leaf anatomy, specifically the percent of leaf volume occupied by water- storage parenchyma (hydrenchyma), and the contribution of respiratory C02 during Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) was investigated in 12 epiphytic species of Tillandsia. It has been postulated that the hydrenchyma, which contributes to C02 exchange through respiration only, may be causally related to the recently observed phenomenon of C02 recycling during CAM. Among the 12 species of Tillandsia, leaves of T. usneoides and T. bergeri exhibited 0% hydrenchyma, while the hydrenchyma in the other species ranged from 2.9% to 53% of leaf cross-sectional area. Diurnal malate fluctuation and nighttime atmospheric C02 uptake were measured in at least four individuals of each species. A significant excess of diurnal malate fluctuation as compared with atmospheric C02 absorbed overnight was observed only in T. schiedeana. This species had an intermediate proportion (30%) of hydrenchyma in its leaves. Results of this study do not support the hypothesis that C02 recycling during CAM may reflect respiratory contributions of C02 from the tissue hydrenchyma. General Information Bromeliaceae Family
General Information Bromeliads are a unique and fascinating family of hundreds of extremely diversified and exotic plants, which are amazingly adaptable, tough and relatively easy to grow. People often say that Bromeliads thrive on neglect. The species can tolerate a huge variety of growing conditions including heat, light, air and moisture. No Bromeliads are native to Australia and therefore have all been imported and introduced here. The plants are native to the Southern States of the USA, Central America and deep into South America, with regions like Florida, Mexico, the West Indies, parts of Brazil and as far south as Chile having many and various species. One very primitive species is also found in Africa and has survived since the two continents separated. Bromeliaceae Family The entire bromeliad family called Bromeliaceae, is divided into three subfamilies containing many genera, with the Bromelioideae and Tillandsioideae subfamilies being the most popular bromeliads for enthusiasts and collectors. The subfamily Bromelioideae is distributed from Mexico to Argentina and has the greatest number of genera. They are mostly epiphytic, tank-type plants with spiny leaves and berry-like fruit containing wet seeds. The subfamily Pitcairnioideae are the most primitive bromeliads, descended from the grass family. Nearly all are terrestrial. Most have spiny leaves. The seeds are dry and usually winged. The subfamily Tillandsioideae has few genera, but includes about half of the species of bromeliads. Growing throughout the Americas, they are mostly epiphytes. All have spineless leaves. Seeds are dry, with feathery "parachutes" and are blown and float in the wind. The most notable and commercially developed of the family is the edible pineapple (Ananus comosus). -

Abstract An updated inventory of the Bromeliaceae for Costa Rica is presented including citations of representa- tive specimens for each species. The family comprises 18 genera and 198 species in Costa Rica, 32 spe- cies being endemic to the country. Additional 36 species are endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Only 4 of the 8 bromeliad subfamilies occur in Costa Rica, with a strong predominance of Tillandsioideae (7 genera/150 spp.; 75.7% of all bromeliad species in Costa Rica). -

Conservation Collier 7/21/14 Agenda Item V.D. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Recommendation to approve the Five-year update of the Final Management Plan for the Conservation Collier Nancy Payton Preserve. OBJECTIVE: To obtain a recommendation of approval from the Conservation Collier Land Acquisition and Advisory Committee (CCLAAC) for the 5-year update for the Nancy Payton Preserve Final Management Plan, along with direction to approach the board of County Commissioners for approval. CONSIDERATIONS: The Nancy Payton Preserve, located in North Belle Meade, has been in County ownership since December 2005. A final Ten-year Management Plan was developed and approved by the CCLAAC 7/21/14 (Agenda Item VI.A.1.). The approved plan has been operational for the Nancy Payton Preserve since that time. The Conservation Collier ordinance 2002-63, as amended, in section 14.3, directs that “Ten-year Plans shall be updated at least every 5 years.” The attached plan has been updated pursuant to that direction. Updates reflect the change in Department from Facilities to Parks and Recreation, include updated maps, updated property status information, additions to plant or animal lists, status of exotic plant infestations, added amenities, provide for streamlining of text, and revision of the management budget to reflect the CCLAAC-approved Conservation Collier Financial Plan. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no new fiscal impact associated with approving this management plan update. Management costs are consistent with the CCLAAC-approved Conservation Collier Financial Plan. GROWTH MANAGEMENT IMPACT: There is no growth management impact associated with this item. RECOMMENDATION: That the CCLAAC recommends approval for the attached proposed Five- year Final Management Plan for Conservation Collier’s Nancy Payton Preserve and directs staff to approach the Board of County Commissioners for approval. -

BOH: A Unique Chemical for the Induction of Flowering in Bromeliads Héctor R. Cibes and A. Santiago Nieves1 INTRODUCTION The pineapple family, Bromeliaceae, is composed of stemless herbs native to tropical America whence they have been disseminated to other areas of the world. They have stiff and sometimes spiny leaves. Their flowers are borne in panicles. Perhaps the most important genus of the family is Ananas, to which the commercial pineapple varieties belong. Other members of the family are noted for the fiber obtained from their leaves. Bromelia pinguin L., or wild pineapple, a native of the West Indies, is widely used as a hedge plant and its fruit is also known to contain a proteolytic enzyme. The genus Bromeha was named after the Swedish botanist, Olaf Bromelius. Bromeliads are becoming increasingly important as ornamental plants, both locally and in the United States. Not only the plants themselves are showy, because of their color, shape, and variegation, but also their flowers are beautiful. An important characteristic among bromeliads is that their flowers are long-lasting on the plants. Some will last, attached to the mother plant, for months without losing their beautiful appear ance. FLOWER INDUCTION However, flowering is not uniform in this group of plants. For instance, a pineapple field may flower sporadically 10 to 15 times throughout the year, after attaining the proper age. Thus, flower-forcing during a con venient time along the growing season is imperative in commercial plant ings. This is attainable through the use of suitable concentrations of either calcium carbide (CaC2), naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), or /3-hydroxyethyl hydrazine (BOH). -

Smith in 1935, is not widely known to bromeliad lovers and horticulturists. It was named in honor of the German Bromeliad Scientist Carl Mez. Only nine species of Mezobromelia are described in science. These are as follows: Mezobromelia bicolor L.B. Smith Mezobromelia brownii H. Luther Mezobromelia capituligera (Grisebach) J.R. Grant Mezobromelia fulgens L.B. Smith Mezobromelia hospitalis (L.B. Smith) J.R. Grant Mezobromelia hutchisonii (L.B. Smith) W. Weber & L.B. Smith Mezobromelia Iyman-smithii Rauh & Barthlott Mezobromelia magdalenae (L.B. Smith) J.R. Grant Mezobromelia pleiosticha (Grisebach) J. Utley & H. Luther The distribution of these magnificent bromeliads ranges from Peru through Ecuador and Colombia. Ecuador is the richest in this genus and new varieties will soon be introduced to science. About José: Born in Spain, José Manzanares first became interested in Bromeliads when he was only 10 years old. He has degrees in agronomy and environmental sciences, soil sciences and nutrition and plant physiology. He went to Belgium for specialization in the culture, propagation and hybridization of tropical plants, particularly Bromeliads, and spent time in botanical gardens of José Manzanares with Mezobromelia fulgens. During the 32 years he has been working on the Bromeliads of Ecuador, he has published numerous studies for various Foundations and given lectures on the subject and the importance of Bromeliads in the ecosystem at events in the US, Ecuador, Colombia, Spain, Belgium, New Zealand and Australia.
