FLIGHTS OF THE ANT POLYERGUS LUCIDUS MAYR* BY MARY TALBOT Lindenwood College, St. Charles, Missouri Flights of ants at the Edwin S. George Reserve, Livingston County, Michigan, have been studied over a number of years (Talbot 956, I959, 963, I964, 966, and Kannowski 959a, 959b). This paper is another in the flight series and concerns the slave-making ant, Polyergus lucidus Mayr. Polyergus colonies are scattered over the George Reserve, living in open ields or at woods' edge and forming mixed colonies with Formica pallidefulva nitidiventris Emery. The flights recorded here took place mainly from the Lawn Colony, where 26 flights were seen during 1960, 96, and 1962. These. observations were supplemented, fo.r comparison, by records of seven flights from two other colonies. The main flights, of Polyergus at he Reserve took place during August. They began in late July a.nd extended into early or mid- September. July 31, 1962 was rhe date of the earliest flight seen, although a dealate female was found on July 28, 1964. The latest flight recorded, on September 9, 1963, liberated only three males. The flight season at any one colony is long, probably a month to six weeks, and the time of starting and stopping flights must vary considerably from. colony to colony, depending on local environment o the nest and rate. of maturing of the brood. Polyergus spread the. maturing of brood of winged ants over an ex- tended period, and flights began long before all of the adults had emerged. Winged pupae have been found as early in the year as June 19, 1962, and as late as September I, 1964. -

According to the narrative, seven Christians of Ephesus took refuge in a cave near the city, where they were discovered by their pursuers, who walled up the entrance in order to starve them to death. A miracle, however, was interposed in their behalf, they fell into a preternatural sleep, in which they lay for nearly two hundred years. The concealment is supposed to have taken place in 250 or 251, and the sleepers to have been reanimated in 447. Their sleep seemed to them to have been for only a night, and they were greatly astonished, on going into the city, to see the cross exposed upon the church tops, which but a few hours ago, as it appeared, was the object of contempt. Their wonderful story told, they were conducted in triumph into the city; but all died at the same moment. -

Accept6 le 18 juin 1984. SUMMARY Mixed-species colonies of Polyergus lucidus and Fdrmica schaufussi xvere studied in New York. Slave raids were conducted in late afternoon, past the peak in diurnal temperature. Multiple raids on different Formica colonies xvere common, as ~vere re-raids on the same colony. In laboratory nests, about 75 % of the raided Formica brood was eaten. Of 27 days on ,which raids occurred in the laboratory, 25 ~vere on Formica nests scouted on the day of the raid. Polyergus scouts are among the oldest individuals in the colony, and call~ws do not participate in scouting during the entire season of their eclosion. The group of Polyergus workers that circle on the surface near the nest prior to raiding has a dynamic composition.. The most frequent behavioral transition ~vas from circling on one day to scouting on the next. The next most common change was from SCOUting to circling. The first scouting of the spring season occurred only one day after the appearance of Polyergus larvae. The first slave raid 'was conducted 4 days later. -

The mild winter gave us Association is held in Syracuse each year. Several a chance to work on a lot of awards are presented at this meeting. This year the our outdoor projects, and state association recognized two of our chapter was especially a help for members for their many years of service – Hans and those affected by Hurricane Joan Kappel of Altamont. Irene. Hopefully the early bud openings and blossoms won’t be seriously affected by the cold spells that are sure to come. One casualty was the just-blossomed Magnolia trees that turned brown after a night with the temperatures in the mid- twenties. Our Chapter has been busy this quarter. We had our Holiday Gathering on January 21st, which was highlighted by a great program given by Kimberley Corwin, an ecologist with a specialty in birds. On March 13th, several of our Chapter members participated in “Forest Awareness Day” at the Legislative Building in Albany. FAD is a day when the “Council of Forest Resource Organizations” (an affiliation of 15 like- minded organizations) meet in small groups with State Legislators and Senators. This year’s issues were Property Taxation, Wood Energy, and Invasive Species. The idea is to keep the lawmakers informed about our issues and the importance of considering them in upcoming bills they are considering. Marilyn Wyman set up our NYFOA display, and as usual, led several visits to Phil Walton presents NYFOA’s 2011 outstanding the Legislators. -

Pinyon Pine Mortality Alters Communities of Ground-Dwelling Arthropods

Cobb2, Paulette L. Ford4, and Sandra L. Brantley5 ABSTRACT.—We documented the effect of drought-induced mortality of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis Engelm.) on com- munities of ground-dwelling arthropods. Tree mortality alters microhabitats utilized by ground-dwelling arthropods by increasing solar radiation, dead woody debris, and understory vegetation. Our major objectives were to determine (1) whether there were changes in community composition, species richness, and abundance of ground-dwelling arthro- pods associated with pinyon mortality and (2) whether specific habitat characteristics and microhabitats accounted for these changes. We predicted shifts in community composition and increases in arthropod diversity and abundance due to the presumed increased complexity of microhabitats from both standing dead and fallen dead trees. We found signifi- cant differences in arthropod community composition between high and low pinyon mortality environments, despite no differences in arthropod abundance or richness. Overall, 22% (51 taxa) of the arthropod community were identified as being indicators of either high or low mortality. Our study corroborates other research indicating that arthropods are responsive to even moderate disturbance events leading to changes in the environment. These arthropod responses can be explained in part due to the increase in woody debris and reduced canopy cover created by tree mortality. Two main factors make hybridization act differently in ants than in other species: eusociality and haplodiploidy. These factors serve to reduce the costs of interspecific hybridization in ants while simultaneously allowing them to take advantage of certain benefits. Eusociality may mitigate the effects of hybridization by allowing hybrids to be shunted into the worker caste, potentially reducing the effects of hybrid sterility. In haplodiploid species, males do not have a father. They instead develop from unfertilized eggs as haploid clones of their mother. This means that interspecifically mated queens do not completely sacrifice reproductive potential even if all hybrids are sterile because they can still produce fertile males. These factors in turn suggest that hybridization should be more common among the social Hymenoptera than other animal groups. Nevertheless, current data suggest that ants hybridize at rates similar to other animal groups, although these data are limited. Furthermore, there is a large amount of overlap between cases of interspecific hybridization and cases of genetic caste determination. A majority of the cases in ants where caste is determined primarily by genotype are associated with hybridization. -

THE ROLE OF SCOUTING IN SLAVE RAIDS BY POL YERGUS BREVICEPS (HYMENOPTERA: FORMICIDAE)* BY HOWARD TOPOFF, DIANE BODONI, PETER SHERMAN, AND LINDA GOODLOE Department of Psychology, Hunter College of CUNY New York, N.Y. 10021 and Department of Entomology, The American Museum of Natural History, New York, N.Y. 10024 INTRODUCTION The formicine ant genus Polyergus contains four species, all of which are obligatory social parasites of the related genus Formica. Slave ants are obtained during group raids, in which a swarm of Polyergus workers penetrates a nest of Formica, disperses the adult workers and queen, and carries off the pupal brood (Topoff et al. 1984, 1985). Although many of these pupae are subsequently consumed in the slave-maker's nest (Kwait and Topoff 1984), a significant portion of the Formica brood is reared through pupal development. Workers eclosing from this pupal population subse- quently perform their typical functions (i.e., foraging, feeding, nest defense) as permanent members of a mixed-species nest. Ever since the pioneering studies on Polyergus rufescens by Huber (1810) and Emery (1908), on P. lucidus by Talbot (1967) and Harman (1968), and on P. breviceps by Wheeler (1916), it has been well known that slave-making raids are usually initiated by a small group of workers called scouts. These individuals locate target colonies of Formica, return to their colony of origin, recruit nestmates, and lead the raiders back to the Formica nest. Despite the generalization that Polyergus slave raids are typically preceded by scouting, virtually no field studies exist showing the actual paths travelled by scouts, or their overall importance in initiating slave raids.
