Dear Friends

I write this letter under the shadow of the death of our friend John Ambler. John’s death was very sudden and left most us in a bewildered state of shock.

There is no doubt that John was a man of many parts. He was a loving husband to Heather, a doting father to Matthew, Helen and Tim and a special grandad to Benjamin and Emma. John was also a long standing, hard working Church Warden at St Marys, a member of various committees, secretary of the Men’s Society, driving force behind the Christian Aid week and he also ran the fundraising for the Children’s Society.

These are only some parts of John’s involvement at St Mary’s, but John was also involved in the wider village life. He was an active member of Probus and was on the management committee. He was also a regular playing member of the “Veterans” at Brockholes Bowling Club. One of John’s other great passions in life was cricket and he could often be found at Headingley cricket ground, where he was a member, come rain or shine watching his beloved Yorkshire.

John was by nature a very quiet, but deep thinking man. He always thought before he spoke. He was also man of great conviction and deep faith. John’s final words to his son Matthew epitomised his faith, “Don’t worry”.

There is no doubt that John will be missed by very many people and our sympathy and prayers go out to Heather and the family.

John Ambler Rest in peace and rise in glory

Yours in Christ’s service

David

John Ambler would normally have reported on this aspect of outreach and mission. From personal experience I know he co- ordinated and carried out the collection personally with quiet dignity, purpose and tremendous commitment. He will be very much missed in this aspect of Church life and Mission. Thanks to Heather for supplying the figures. 2 Editor

Parish Giving Corner

responding to God’s love enabling mission

Giving - it’s not all about money Listening to the recent sermon asking us to think about the talents we are blessed with, and how we might use them, brought to mind the challenge faced by a congregation in a neighbouring Deanery.

Following a sermon based on “The Parable of the Talents” (Matthew 25 14-30) the Vicar to everyone’s surprise gave each member of the congregation a £5 note. The Vicar then challenged them to use their talents in order to increase the value of their £5 to benefit the church. They have the whole summer to reap the fruits of their labours. It will be interesting to see how they rise to the challenge – what would you do with yours?

Our focus is on financial matters but we should never forget that Christian Giving is about more than money. It covers all forms of giving - talents, time, skills etc.

Please ask and we will be happy to help on any aspect of giving.

Clive Green and Roger Kenworthy - Parish Giving Officers

A Prayer - For Wise use of Talents

Almighty God, you have blessed each of us with unique gifts, and have called us into specific occupations, relationships, and activities using those gifts. Enable us to use our talents to witness to our faith in you and to communicate your love to the people we meet each day. Empower us to be ministers of reconciliation, love, hope, and justice. Keep us steadfast in our commitment to serve actively in your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

PCC Meeting Report - Wednesday, May 18 th

The meeting of the PCC held in St George’s Church commenced with a shortened version of the Holy Communion service. There were 10 members present.

Minutes from the previous meeting were unanimously accepted as a correct record and there were no matters arising.

Ian Walter, PCC Treasurer, reported that the parish had ended 2010 with a deficit of £10,000 on our Common Fund payments and a similar deficit would follow in 2011 based on current estimates. Both churches reported deficits for the first quarter of 2011 since there is considerable expense in the early part of the year due to insurance payments etc. In both cases it is planned to break even over the whole year.

The Vicar expressed the hope that we may be able to reduce the deficit on Common Fund payments when the overall financial situation becomes clear at the year’s end.

Minutes from the meetings of both St Mary’s DCC and St George’s DCC were tabled.

In his report the Vicar spoke of remarks made by the Archdeacon during his Visitation on the previous evening in a service at Lepton attended by clergy and churchwardens. Dangers of trees on church property and the need for regular inspections were among the matters stressed as was the need to become a Registered Charity since the Annual Parish finances involve money in excess of £100,000. This matter is in hand.

Under Correspondence, a document received from the Coffee Wagon Committee, outlining ideas for a new strategy, was circulated. This will be discussed at the next meeting of St Mary’s DCC.

It was decided that the 12 th annual award of the Millennium Book Prizes to the four schools in the parish would take place this year and the Secretary was asked to inform the schools.

HONLEY NEWS

Choir News

On Monday 16th May we were pleased to welcome Gordon Appleton, RSCM Music Adviser (North of ) to St Mary’s. He introduced us to some new music to sing at Communion Services. He also guided us through an alternative Communion setting that we had already chosen to alternate with the new one we sing at the moment.

All members of the choir, music group, organists and members of music groups from St George’s agreed that two hours went far too quickly and another visit at some future date would not go amiss.

B Shirley Turner St Mary’s Street Market Update

We now have a volunteer, Wendy Moore, to manufacture jams and preserves be sold on 3 December 2011 at the Street Market. However, if anyone has any fruit from their gardens that they do not think they can use - please can they pick this and pass to Wendy who would be pleased to receive it. Similarly donations of clean jars with lids would be welcomed.

Anyone wanting a stall for a non-St Mary’s activity should now contact Cliff Green for details. We shall be asking for volunteers for St Mary’s stalls in a few weeks’ time.

Slaithwaite Christmas Lights Committee is having an afternoon of activities and stalls ahead of the grand switch-on of their Lights on Saturday 26 November.

Anyone who is interested in having a stall at Slaithwaite should contact Sharon Hockin at [email protected] for details. (St Mary’s Street Market Committee hopes that a stall at Slaithwaite will be additional to one at St Mary’s and not instead of one at Honley on 3 December – we do need your support!)

Pastoral Care

The Prayer Group continues to meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 10.00 am. Please keep us informed about the people on the Prayer List and others who need our prayers so that our petitions can be made more meaningful.

Carol and Bill Tankard have loyally sat in church each Thursday morning since Easter so that the doors can be left open for visitors. Holidays and Family commitments prevent them from providing this service every week.

Volunteers to assist for either the whole or part of a session, 10.00am to 12 noon, would be appreciated. Perhaps the session could be combined with some other activity – shopping, coffee in the Parish Room etc. Carol always uses the time to do some cleaning around church! Pat Green - Lay Pastoral Minister

Canon Charles Edward Brooke (1847-1911)

We are delighted that Honley Civic Society have published a booklet, ‘The Brookes of Honley’. This puts on record the considerable contribution that the family has made over many years to St Mary ’s Church, the Village and the district around.

I was glad to contribute a brief account of Canon Brooke, the centenary of whose death falls in July this year. Canon Brooke was Vicar of the church of St John the Divine Kennington, a distinguished parish priest, for many years. He was also the leading Church of England spokesman in Educational matters, founder of the first Ladies Teacher Training College, St Gabriel’s and inspirer and benefactor of many missionary endeavours. He is buried in the Brooke family plot in the churchyard.

In commemoration of this fine priest there is to be a brief service at his grave on Sunday 17th July at 4.00 pm. All are welcome.

Men’s Society

The May meeting of the Men’s Society enjoyed an unusual presentation from Graham Wardman. This involved a power point account of his exploits on ‘holidays’ tackling the most difficult stages of the Tour de France cycle race. The public are allowed to follow these routes a few days before the real thing and we were treated to details of the 21 hairpin bends on the famous Alpe d’Huez and other iconic mountain stages.

Graham’s account of the physical and mental aspects of the ascents as well as technical details of the bikes used and the gradients – especially travelling the downhill sections at a speed of over 60 m.p.h. – provided a fascinating meeting which only served to convince his audience that one must be a little ‘strange’ to enjoy such a hobby – although it was possible to appreciate the sense of satisfaction on achieving the objective successfully.

Our thanks to Graham for an excellent evening. Cliff Green

Many thanks to all who supported our Coffee Day in June and helped us to raise £240 for “Away From It All” (AFIA) holidays for disadvantaged families.

In July we have a “Holiday Quiz” for the same fund. The sheets will be available in church and at Thursday coffee during July. Entries should be handed to me before Sunday, July 30 th . The first correct entry drawn will receive an appropriate gift.

A group of us attended the Deanery Quiet Evening at St Lucius’, Farnley Tyas in June and appreciated the time for reflection with friends from other branches.

Please join us on July 6 th for our monthly meeting when the speaker will be Dr. Margaret Hayley on “Why I Became a Composer”. She is the daughter of Barbara Shaw who was a loyal member of St Mary’s MU for many years. Barbara was our pianist accompanying our hymn singing at meetings. This is an Open Meeting and all music lovers, and others, will be very welcome.

Details will be given out at the July meeting about the Summer Lunch on August 3 rd . Please make sure that you fill in a form and put your name down if you wish to join in.

Black Hill revisited

One of Honley’s best loved Scout Leaders is to be remembered in a charity walk this month. The walk up to Black Hill (on the moors above Digley Reservoir) on July 9th to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research will be a fitting tribute to the late Allan Broadbent.

Allan, 57, died in 2006 after a three year battle with cancer. He had volunteered for 30 years serving Honley Scouts as a leader and a generation of boys will remember him for his sense of fun, adventurous activities and dedication to scouting. His enthusiasm for life touched the lives of many who were fortunate to meet him.

Anyone who knew Allan is invited to take part in the remembrance walk on 9th July 2011. Meet at Digley Reservoir car park (SE 110 072) to set off at 11.00 am to walk up Black Hill. Return to Digley estimated at around 3.00pm. Please bring packed lunch and waterproofs etc.

Allan’s widow Eileen is a fundraiser for Yorkshire Cancer Research and will be collecting at the walk or you can donate online now via: http://www.justgiving.com/BlackHillWalk .

Thank you all for filling your envelopes. The total collection from the Brockholes Churches was £204.26. This compares with a village house-to-house collection in previous years of around £800. However, with our smaller band of volunteers it does seem a reasonable option which the Churches Together groups agreed should be repeated next year. The breakdown was: St George's £85.26, Methodist Church £119.00. Thank you once again.

News from Brockholes School

The children and staff at Brockholes School have had a great start to the summer term. Most classes have been on a day visit to Cliffe House in to work in the beautiful grounds learning more about the environment. Activities have included pond dipping, orienteering, nature walks, identifying trees, creating art in the environment and minibeast hunts. All classes enjoyed their visits (even on the days when it was windy and raining!) and children have said that one of the best parts of the day was playing on the adventure playground.

A choir of Year 3 children have taken part in the Music Festival at Town Hall and performed brilliantly to a packed audience. They had been busy learning the songs in class before joining with many other schools for a day of rehearsal before the evening performance. Seeing all the children on stage performing in such an amazing building made many parents and staff very proud.

On June 15th we had a ‘Green Day’ when pupil representatives from each class helped to plan different activities to make the most of our outdoor environment. Activities included miniature tray gardens, making musical instruments out of junk, a leaf challenge, playing a game of outdoor scrabble, identifying all the trees in the grounds, a piece of ongoing giant artwork which was photographed every minute to see how it developed and older children performing and telling stories to younger children. Everyone had a great day!
