  • The Concept of Authorities in the Treatise Tractatus De Ecclesia by Ivan Stojkovi∆
Dubrovnik Annals 9 (2005): 7-36 7 Original paper UDC 262.12 StojkoviÊ, I. UDC 239:262.12 StojkoviÊ, I. THE CONCEPT OF AUTHORITIES IN THE TREATISE TRACTATUS DE ECCLESIA BY IVAN STOJKOVI∆ RELJA SEFEROVI∆ ABSTRACT: The Dubrovnik-born Dominican friar Ivan StojkoviÊ (1392/5- 1443) was actively engaged in the Church Councils in the first half of the 15th century, especially in the Church Council of Basle. Although the disputes he led with the Hussites and the Byzantines did not bring any practical success, he wrote a book, Tractatus de Ecclesia, where he expressed his ideas about how to overcome the existing divisions within the Christian world, and about how the Church had to be reformed from within. His hopes were projected in the universal ecclesiastical community named Ecclesia militans. Looking for new authorities which would corroborate his ideas, StojkoviÊ found them in the universities. Introduction The crisis within Christendom in the 15th century was manifest in three main spheres. Crisis was seen in the insecure position of the papacy, in the appearance of the Wycliffite and Hussite heresies in the West, and, in the East, in the increasing pressure on the Byzantine Empire from the Ottoman Turks. Since the papacy had already been shaken by the Avignon captivity and the subsequent Great Western Schism, it was no longer expected that the papacy would succeed in restoring its role as the supreme religious authority in the Relja SeferoviÊ, member of the Institute for Historical Sciences of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Dubrovnik. Address: Zavod za povijesne znanosti HAZU, Lapadska obala 6, 20000 Dubrovnik, Croatia.

When the changing nature and locus of large-scale conflict in the post-Cold War era is also taken into account, the case for a reconsideration of the fundamentals of conflict analysis and conflict resolution becomes all the more stark. New Approaches to Conflict Analysis promotes the development of new theoretical insights and their application to concrete cases of large-scale conflict, broadly defined.

  • Historiographic Controversy About the Crusades Against Bosnian “Heretics”
Journal of Balkan and Black Sea Studies Year 3, Issue 4, June 2020, pp. 63-77. Historiographic controversy about the Crusades against Bosnian “heretics” Dženan Dautović Abtract: The teachings of the Bosnian Church constitute one of the greatest mysteries of the medieval period of Bosnian history. The issue whether it acted in the realms of heresy or orthodoxy has been disputed in a scientific battleground in historiographical circles many times. Just a touch less controversy is linked with the nature of military missions proclaimed and executed against Bosnian ''heretics''. Some authors characterize these conflicts as religious, so typical for crusades, while others, however, emphasize the political and territorial pretensions of Hungary regarding Bosnia, as the main motif, describing the Holy war idea as a cover story for the sake of the Papal curia. The triangle between Hungary, Rome and Bosnia was the focal point of discourse in which numerous accusations on one side and explanations from the other occurred, along with war propaganda, anti-heretic warnings and attempts to prove innocence and that right path were followed. Interestingly, the Bosnian medieval state, so many times threatened with crusades against it, became the leading advocate for crusade missions against the Ottoman danger in the 15th century. This transformation did not occur because crusader ideas prevailed, but rather because of an evolution within the social and administrative structures. This work will explore all the differences between the opposing historiographic streams, their approaches regarding sources and literature. Assoc. Prof. Dr., Regional Museum Travnik and Faculty of Pedagogy University of Bihać, ORCID ID: 0000-0002-7858-3977 e-mail: [email protected] Submitted: 11.05.2019, Accepted: 20.06.2020 DŽENAN DAUTOVIĆ The main goal is to determine how research performed with more or less identical source material, can produce such opposing results.

  • The Role of Different Discourses in Creating Arguments for Self
Secessionist framing: The role of different discourses in creating arguments for self-determination By Beáta Huszka Central European University International Relations and European Studies Department Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science Word Count: 90496 Supervisor: Erin Jenne CEU eTD Collection Budapest February 2010 Declaration I hereby declare that the thesis contains no materials accepted for any other degrees in any other institutions. To my knowledge the thesis does not contain unreferenced material or ideas from other authors. Name: Beáta Huszka Signature: CEU eTD Collection I Abstract By looking at the self determination movements which emerged in Yugoslavia and its successor states, we find that the various movements were framed very differently while political leaders tried to garner support for their state building ambitions. While Slovenia claimed to seek independence mainly on economic grounds, in Croatia, historical and ethno- nationalist arguments dominated the discourse on independence. Economic arguments played a prominent role also in Montenegro during mobilization where, however, a reformist, pro-democracy rhetoric became the most salient. The question arises why in some cases of self-determination elites push for a higher level of sovereignty in the name of economic advancement, whereas in other cases, self-determination movements refer to ethnic identity, human rights issues and other kind of rationale. Therefore, this dissertation specifically asks why some movements are framed by certain types of arguments and not by others. Why did the Montenegrin independence movement rely so heavily on a pro-democracy rhetoric and why did economic arguments become so central in Slovenia? How can it be explained that in Croatia ethno-nationalist themes dominated while references to economic reasons remained marginal? This study is based on the assumption that framing influences inter-ethnic dynamics during the course of a self-determination movement in a multi-ethnic setting.

  • Communism, Post-Communism, and the War in Croatia
2441Chapter7 16/10/02 8:06 am Page 183 7 Tito’s Yugoslavia and after: Communism, post-Communism, and the war in Croatia Not only is the Yugoslav reality as twisted as the tunnels that held the Minotaur, but the observer keeps coming face to face with himself, seeing his own image spring out from what he thinks are the events of history, unable to separate projection from observation, fact from reflection, self from other. (E. A. Hammel in The Yugoslav Labyrinth) After the Second World War and the devastation caused by German and Italian invasion, the Yugoslav peoples had the task of rebuilding their society after it had been torn apart by occupation and fratricidal warfare. The legends surrounding Tito’s Communist Partisans and their war of liberation are well known, immortalised in such works as Milovan Djilas’ Wartime, Fitzroy Maclean’s The Heretic, and Frank Lindsay’s Beacons in the Night. However, as has been seen in the preceding two chapters, contemporary Serbian and Croatian reinterpretations of this period were often negative. The Croatian myth of Bleiburg maintained that the foundations of Tito’s Yugoslavia were constructed on the genocide of Croatian soldiers. For the Serbs, Tito was little more than an ethnic Croat with a grudge against Yugoslavia’s largest and most powerful nation. Both sides presented the lifetime of the SFRY as an era when national identity was suppressed under a barrage of Communist propa- ganda. National symbols were replaced with ‘Brotherhood and Unity’ and Tito’s own cult of personality. In Tito’s Yugoslavia, ethnic hatreds seemingly smouldered below the surface, manifesting themselves in bizarre and often contradictory ways.

  • East European Quarterly, Vol. XIV, No. 4 Winter, 1980 MORAVIA's
East European Quarterly, Vol. XIV, No. 4 Winter, 1980 MORAVIA'S HISTORY RECONSIDERED: THE TOMB OF ST. MF.THODIUS AND THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY AT MOROVIC (YUGOSLAVIA) Vladimir Gvozdanovic-Goss The University of Michigan S.cholars are well advised to refrain from far-reaching judgments on works in disciplines other than their own. But it is a duty of any historian, in whatever branch his expertise may be, to bring forward evidence which may have some bearing on the problems outside his own area of study. This brief note is i:xactly that: a piece of evidence deduced from my work as a historian of medieval art supplied in the hope of helping the discussion opened by Jmre Boba's book Moravia's History Reconsidered: 11 Reinter pretation of Medieval Sources. 1 I have no intention of making any cate· gorical or sensationalist claii:ns, but l believe l can demonstrate that thi:ri: is a place, within what Boba considers to be the Moravia of the Cyrillo Methodian mission, where it would not be at all futile to look for the tomb of St. Methodius. As a scholar involved for some fifteen years with the early medieval art of the Southern Slavs, I am fully aware of the problems one encounters in assessing historical and cultural developments between the Carpathians and the Adriatic before the end of the first millenium A.D. Boba's localizing of the Moravia of the Cyrillo·Metho<lian mission to the south of the Danube, more exactly in the Southeastern corner of the Pannonic plain, between the Sava and the Danube rivers, around the ancient city of Sirmium to which Methodius was appointed archbishop and in the cathedral of which city he was buried, as radical as it is, is a significant step forward in the badly needed discussion and reexamination of the early mi:dieval history of F.astern Central and Southeastern Europe.2 If Boba's inti:rpretations are accepted, some previously unacceptable concepts and sources start to make sense.
