Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas.

FACT SHEET MNS Hornbill Conservation Project Hornbill Volunteer Programme 2013 © MNS/Teh Yew Kiang Belum-Temengor – A Treasure Chest of Malaysian Biodiversity Older than the Congo; richer in biodiversity. The Belum-Temengor (BT) Forest Complex in Perak is a 130 million year old forest. The BT Forest Complex consists primarily of the Royal Belum State Park and the Temengor Forest Reserve, an area of 288,000 ha in size. It is home to some of Asia’s most spectacular wildlife including tigers, elephants and rhinoceros, and something very special; possibly the world’s largest seasonal congregations of hornbills. In 2006, the MNS Belum-Temengor Campaign was launched, aimed at securing this large expanse of forested landscape. The Perak Government responded to one of the five actions and gazetted Royal Belum State Park (117,500 ha) in 2007. MNS continues to advocate for the protection of Temengor Forest Reserve, part of which forms the site for MNS Hornbill Conservation Project. Due to continued disturbance to the forest, logging being one of the main ones, the hornbills of Belum-Temengor are under threat as they require large areas of forested land to feed on fruiting trees as well as large mature trees to nest in. Belum-Temengor – Home of the Hornbills MNS led the first heritage and scientific expedition to Belum-Temengor © MNS/Lim Kim in 1993 to document its rich biodiversity. Through this expedition, the Chye mass movement of Aceros hornbills was documented. Over 2,365 individuals in flight were counted on 25 November 1993. In September 2008, the highest count ever recorded was 3,261 birds.

GEOLOGY OF THE BELUM – HALA TRANSECT AREA ALONG THE MALAYSIA–THAILAND BORDER GEOLOGICAL PAPERS VOLUME 9 by The Malaysian - Thai Working Group A joint project carried out by Minerals and Geoscience Department, Malaysia and Department of Mineral Resources, Thailand The Malaysia-Thailand Border Joint Geological Survey Committee (MT-JGSC) 2012 GEOLOGY OF THE BELUM-HALA TRANSECT AREA ALONG THE MALAYSIA-THAILAND BORDER by The Malaysian-Thai Working Group A joint project carried out by Minerals and Geoscience Department, Malaysia and Department of Mineral Resources, Thailand The Malaysia-Thailand Border Joint Geological Survey Committee (MT-JGSC) 2012 PREFACE This report together with the accompanying geological map on the scale 1:250,000 is the result of close cooperation between the Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia, and the Department of Mineral Resources Thailand in resolving problems related to cross border geological correlation between Malaysia and Thailand. The Transect area covers about 2,020 square kilometres along the common Malaysia-Thailand border. Fieldwork was carried out in October 2005, January 2010 and March 2010 in the Belum area, Malaysia. A joint field check was carried out in the Belum area from 9th to 14th March 2010 by the geoscientists from both Malaysia and Thailand. There was no fieldwork carried out in the Hala area, Thailand due to security and accessibility reasons (very thick jungle). Thus, geological interpretation in the Hala area was based on the remote sensing interpretation and correlation of the photogeological units with the Belum area, Malaysia as well as previous works done in the Batu Melintang-Sungai Kolok and Pengkalan Hulu-Betong Transects areas.
