St. Patrick Mission Statement A Welcoming Faith community called to be witnesses of God’s Love in the Roman Catholic Tradition, through Discipleship, Celebration of His Word and Sacraments, Evangelization and Service In the Hope of Eternal Salvation Page 2 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Dear Friends in Christ,

Joyful and sorrowful moods, present in today’s celebration underscores the triumphal entry and the passion respectively. Joyfully we chant with the gospel: “Hosanna… blessed is he who comes...,” in order to recall Je- sus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The other, crucify him...” recalls His passion. In these mysteries, Palm/ Passion Sunday, therefore, commemorates as it were, Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem in order to ac- complish the paschal mystery for the salvation of the entire human race. He united our sufferings to His so that in dying He destroys our death and in His rising He restores us to life eternal.

The King of Peace, Jesus, enters Jerusalem (Hebrew- Jeru = city, and salem = peace - city of peace.). In contrast Jerusalem, as we know it, has been a place of constant strife, conflicts and wars, a symbol of our world, which professes freedom/liberty yet people are enslaved to sin - hatred, prejudice, anger, killing, selfishness, etc. We need to give Jesus a chance to enter our world, homes and our hearts. That is the true meaning and celebration of Palm Sunday, that is, giving Jesus a path into our hearts. People laid olive and palm branches as he entered Jerusalem. We carry palm branches as reminders that we need to lay open our hearts for the King of Peace so that He will bring His peace, justice and love.

The second theme, crucify him, crucify him, betokens the passion; the suffering that Jesus endured as a price for that long awaited peace. At Gethsemane, He suffered betrayal from His close friends and associates and when those He fed, healed and came to help shouted, crucify him… . He suffered abuses, accusations, rejection, etc. His suffering brings us life. In re- membering His passion, we also remember that Jesus is always supporting us when we’re suffering because He suffered in the same way that we do and has united our suffering to His. The Sacred Heart of Jesus guides our journey as Mary in her Immaculate Heart intercedes for us as she did for Jesus on His bitter journey to glory.

You are invited to participate in the events of His suffering and death recapped in Holy Week. Please join our parish in daily confessions before all masses this week. Holy Thursday starts the Easter Triduum (three most holy days before Easter). Some of our parishioners will represent us at the Chrism Mass in Rockford on that day. At 7:00PM we will celebrate the Mass of the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. Adoration will be available from the end of the liturgy until Midnight. At 9:00PM join with the members of the Ladies Guild on a traditional 7 Church Holy Thursday Visit to spend time with Jesus in 7 churches in our neighborhood. On Good Friday morning we will pray Morning Prayer, from the Liturgy of the Hours, at 8:00AM and in the afternoon will celebrate Stations of the Cross at 2:00PM and will continue with the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 3:00PM. On Holy Saturday at 11:00AM you are invited to bring your Easter Basket containing the foods for your Easter meal to the church for the traditional Easter Basket Blessing. At 7:30PM on Holy Saturday we cele- brate the Easter Vigil.

The Easter Vigil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in the Roman Catholic Church. Although celebrated Holy Saturday even- ing, it is the dramatic Easter Vigil Liturgy that marks the beginning of Easter. We are awaiting our master's return with our lamps full and burning, so that He will find us awake and seat us at His table (cf. Luke 12:35). All Catholics should try to attend this beautiful service. The vigil is divided into four parts: 1) Service of Light, 2) Liturgy of the Word, 3) Liturgy of Baptism, and 4) Liturgy of the Eucharist. On Easter Sunday we will celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection with Masses at 7AM, 9AM and 11AM.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

The Seven Church Visitation April 13th, Holy Thursday Evening

St. Joseph St. John the Baptist Holy Apostles Christ the King Richmond Johnsburg McHenry Wonder Lake St. Mary McHenry For centuries Catholics have been visiting seven churches in their area on Holy Thursday after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This pilgrimage prac- tice originated in Rome, where the faithful visited the seven Roman Basilicas saying prayers and “watching” in adoration at each. This evening pilgrimage corresponds to the seven stops of the Via Cruces that were made by Jesus on His way to Calvary.

St. Patrick’s Ladies Guild offers you the opportunity to participate in this Holy Thursday tradition, by visiting 7 local churches. We will begin by leaving the St. Patrick parking lot at 9:00PM. We will spend approx. 20 minutes per church (including travel time to, time in the church and return to transportation). We will carpool to each church and meet and enter the church as a group. We will return to St. Patrick by 11:30PM and you may spend as St. Patrick little or as much time here as you wish - adoration will end at Midnight. McHenry

St. Peter For planning purposes, we ask that you contact the parish office (815-385- Volo 0025) by Tuesday, April 11th if you will join us. Please let us know if you’d be willing to be a driver or would rather be a passenger. Page 4 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

McHenry Hearts Afire St. Mary Catholic Church 1407 N. Richmond Road, McHenry / 815-385-0024 proudly hosts Service includes: ExposiƟon of the Blessed Sacrament with Divine Mercy Sunday BenedicƟon, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Solemn Vespers

April 23, 2017 - 3:00 pm VeneraƟon of: The Sacred Image of Divine Mercy and a Relic of St. FausƟna

The Sacrament of ReconciliaƟon begins at 2:00 PM Fellowship & Refreshments AŌerwards Dear Friend: Put your Trust in Him – never lose hope! The Divine Mercy message and devotion is a remedy especially suited to meet the critical needs of our age. In a world in which, at times, darkness seems to be enveloping almost everything, a world now full to overflowing with apostasy, the persecution of Christians, the breakdown of the family, the exploitation of the poor, the murder of unborn children, the horrors of ethnic cleansing and interna- tional terrorism, where indeed, if not to the Divine Mercy can the world turn to find refuge and the light of hope?

As the human race wanders further and further from its Savior, He has not abandoned it to its fate, nor failed to find new ways to bring His lost sheep home. Every aspect of the Divine Mercy message and devotion that He fashioned proclaims loud and clear the same gospel message: God is not waiting patiently for the world to come back to Him! Rather, His Mercy always takes the initia- tive ---- without any merit or deserving on our part -- and seeks us out and finds us!

Everything in the Divine Mercy image speaks of the risen Lord taking the initiative, and seeking the lost and the broken hearted with rays of His merciful love. In this image Christ is shown walking to- ward the viewer, and His hand is raised with a blessing of peace even before we ask for it. In an age in which the visual image has become the most powerful medium of communication, Jesus Christ has fashioned for us an image of Himself that awakens our trust in Him and calms our fears.

Here is the Divine Remedy for a world of cold hearts and broken hearts: The Merciful Heart of Jesus, which can transform human hearts so they become “living reflections” of His own. With approximately one billion people living in abject poverty, millions more living under the reign of false and oppressive ideologies, surely, the time is right for the advent of a worldwide apostolate of Mercy, fashioned by Christ’s own Merciful Heart! --excerpts from A New Millennium of Mercy by Dr. Robert Stackpole, STD For more information go to www.thedivinemercy.org

The (TRID-oo-um), Latin for “three days,” commemorates Christ’s redemptive journey through death, burial and resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinct parts. Basically, the Sacred Triduum is one great festival recounting the last three days of Jesus’ life on earth, the events of his Passion and Res- urrection, when the Lamb of God laid down His life in atonement for our sins. “Though chronologically three days, they are li- turgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery” (USCCB).

Holy Thursday: The evening Mass on Holy Thursday is referred to as The Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This is where the Church remembers the institution of the Eucharist and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the Last Supper, as well as the institu- tion of the priesthood, which took place the evening before Jesus was crucified. The washing of the feet ceremony, where the priest washes the feet of others, commemorates Christ’s great commission that we “love one another.” Extra hosts are conse- crated at this Mass to be used on Good Friday when no Mass will be celebrated.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday concludes with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament to the “ of re- pose”, a place where the consecrated host is kept other than the main altar where Mass is normally celebrated. Because of the Last Supper, Holy Thursday is a day especially given to adoration of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist; many parishes will have Eu- charistic Adoration at this until Midnight.

At the end of the Mass, the Stripping of the Altar occurs. All the altar coverings and decorations are removed symbolizing the fact that Christ was stripped of His garments upon His arrest.

Good Friday: Good Friday is a mandatory day of fasting and abstinence. This is the day of the crucifixion, the day Jesus died for the sins of the world. The parish altar looks very different on Good Friday, it is plain and bare. There is no consecrated Host in the Tabernacle at the main altar of the church; it was carried away on Holy Thursday night to the “altar of repose” to signify Jesus’ death. The candle by the Tabernacle is blown out, and the Tabernacle doors are left open to show that it is emp- ty. Jesus is gone. This is quite dramatic, highlighting that Good Friday is a solemn day of prayer and mourning.

The liturgy on Good Friday is not a Mass, but rather a communion service using the consecrated hosts from Holy Thurs- day. It often takes place at 3pm, the hour that Jesus breathed his last on the cross. Veneration of the Cross also takes place at this service, processing to kneel before a cross and either touching it or kissing it. Often the priest will begin the service pros- trate in front of the altar.

Holy Saturday: On this day Christ is in the tomb. There is no daytime Mass on Holy Saturday. It is still a day of fasting and sorrow, the final one before the Easter Vigil begins that evening. We remember, with Mary and the disciples, that Jesus died and was separated from them for the first time as he lay in the tomb. The faithful often continue their Good Friday fast through Holy Saturday. In the Apostles Creed we pray “He descended into hell” (Hades, the abode of the dead) which describes what Jesus did in the time between His burial and Resurrection. Jesus descended to the realm of the dead on Holy Saturday to save the righteous souls, such as the Old Testament patriarchs, who died before His crucifixion. The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls Jesus’ descent into the realm of the dead “the last phase of Jesus’ messianic mission,” during which he “opened heaven’s gates for the just who had gone before him.” Before Holy Saturday, there were no souls enjoying the beatific vision of God in heaven!

A vigil service is held after nightfall on Holy Saturday in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. This is called the Easter Vigil, the most glorious, beautiful, and dramatic liturgy in the Catholic Church. The vigil is divided into four parts and can last about 2 hours: 1) the service of light, 2) the liturgy of the Word, 3) the liturgy of Baptism, and 4) the liturgy of the Eucharist. This is also the Mass where those in RCIA are brought into full communion with the Catholic Church. The selected set of read- ings for the Easter Vigil follows the whole story of salvation from God’s creation of the world, the sparing of Noah and his family and the flood and the deliverance of God’s people from Egypt to the Gospel accounts of Jesus rising from the grave.

Please come and celebrate these greatest of days in our Catholic tradition with your parish family. Times for all the liturgical celebrations of these days are listed on the front of the bulletin. Any questions, please call the parish office at 815-385-0025. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Page 9

“Emma” has such a positive attitude and has been working hard to provide for her daughter. She loves to cook for others and has applied for a number of restaurant jobs, from fast food to family restaurants. Emma had several interviews lined up, and while she works a part-time job, she wants and needs full-time employment. Meanwhile, she worried des- perately about a shut-off notice from ComEd and how this would affect her first grader. Thankfully, St. Vincent de Paul was able to pay the balance due and retain their elec- trical service. Having electricity, a few bags of needed food and less stress helped Emma ace her interview and get the job she wanted.
