Can You Help The Hut? As you will be aware it is planned to build a new surgery and a new community centre on the current site of the Hut in Furlong Road during 2019. We intend to offer a wide range of community services and events as well as run a coffee shop on site and organise health and fitness sessions in conjunction with the surgery. In keeping with our constitution we want to involve the local village community in the running of the new facilities. We are looking for new commitee members who are willing to give up one evening a month to plan, manage and help make the new facilities a success. You do not need any special skills or experience but just enthusiasm to make a difference in Westcott. Rev John Weyman Vicar of Westcott 1976 - 1997

John Weyman, later known as John Weyman Pack-Beresford, was Vicar of Westcott from 1976 - 1997. On his retirement he and his wife Pat moved to their home in Cornwall.

In recent years John was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and died on 7 May 2018 at home, aged 86, with Pat and their daughter Julia by his side. A quiet funeral was held in Cornwall.

Pat and Julia would like to thank everyone for their kind messages, cards and letters following John’s death, from which we have taken much strength.

A Service of Thanksgiving for John’s life will be held on Saturday 20 October at 2pm at Holy Trinity Church, Westcott followed by tea. All are very wel- come.

Yoga with Kasia Yoga classes have been running for the last couple of years at St John’s Chapel on Thursday evenings starting at 6:00 pm & 7:30 pm and on Friday mornings at 9:15 am. Each class lasts 75 minutes. I also hold quarterly workshops on Saturday mornings, where we work deeper into postures and dedicate more time to other aspects of yoga like philosophy, breathing and meditation.

I teach Hatha yoga, a type that uses physical exercises to master the body, along with breathing and meditative exercises to quieten the mind and ultimately attain a more peaceful life. After 15 years of practice and study, I became an accredited teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga, the national governing body for yoga in the UK, and I continue to develop my teaching through workshops, study and conferences.

Yoga can be approached at any level. A beginner will notice immediate positive effects, and regular practice can lead to dramatic improvements in general well-being, back and joint health, and stress-related conditions. Apart from this, it is a wonderful way of spending time on yourself, away from life’s worries and stresses.

More tips from our local fire safety fire. You will notice the black signs of expert, Gary Panton at Dorking Green smoke escaping around the top of the Watch. door.

Closing doors to prevent fire spread

We advise residents to get into the habit of closing doors at night. I appreciate this is not always practical for every room, but as the kitchen and lounge usually have the most electrical equipment in a home, these are the most important. A closed door has 3 main benefits in the event of a fire: However, the second photograph shows the room on the opposite side of • A standard internal door can hold the door which has been devastated back a fire for 20 to 30 minutes, which by an intense fire. prevents fire from spreading to the rest of the home.

• A closed door prevents the spread of smoke. Although a small quantity of smoke will escape, enough to set off alarms, escape routes are kept clear enough for you to escape to safety. Even a small fire can produce great quantities of smoke.

• Restricting the spread of flame and smoke the rest of the home can be I hope you all remain safe and well spared the damage caused by fire. and I’ll write again next month.

66 APPEAL FOR HELP - ST JOHN’S CHURCHYARD The Grave of Private F. C. Barnes Royal Army Medical Corps - Died 31st March 1918

Appeal for volunteers In St John’s graveyard, there is the grave of Private Frederick Charles Barnes of the Royal Army Medical Corps who died on the 31st March 1918. Private Barnes, like many thousands of other brave soldiers, paid the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War of 1914 – 1918, and his final resting place is here in Westcott.

Sadly, like many of the graves in St John’s grave yard, minimal ground maintenance over many years has resulted in significant foliage growth and the grave of Private Barnes is almost lost in the undergrowth.

A small group of volunteers would, in the first instance, like to clear the grave of Private Barnes in time for the centenary of the Armistice on the 11th November 2018, and have him remembered during the Wednesday service at St Johns closest to the Armistice. The group would then move on to a more general tidy up of the graveyard.

The ambition of the group is to clear the grave of Private Barnes and provide a simple floral tribute by November 2018. Although some work has already been carried out in the graveyard, much more work is required. This is an appeal for volunteers to join a number of work parties to achieve this ambition. It is currently planned to have monthly work parties on a number of Friday afternoon and also on a Tuesday evening.

The first work party is planned for Friday 5th October 2018 at 2pm and then on Tuesday 9th October at 6pm. The duration of each work party is 1½ to 2 hours.

If you can spare two hours once a month, and would like to assist in this project kindly contact me, Tony Astor, by email at [email protected] Thank you Tony Astor Westcott Bonfire and Fireworks Display at Westcott Sports Club on Saturday 12th November Gates open 6.30, Fireworks 7.30 Music, Hot Food, Drinks, Sweets & Raffle Tickets on the Gate 67 LOCAL PAINTING AND DECORATING COMPANY J.A.
