Thanks. Santa. A Happy New Year to all our Readers On Sunday 22nd January 2012 Le Roi Danse (The King is Dancing), directed by Gérard Corbiau, is a lush portrayal of the court of the ‘Sun The Hothfield World Cinema Film Club King’ Louis XIV of France at Versailles, focussing on proudly presents: the relationship between the young king and his court composer Gianbattista Lulli – renamed 'Jean-Baptiste' Lully, an ambitious and talented young Florentine. Lully, played with mad intensity by Boris Terral, is an impassioned dancer, composer, and conductor who worships his sovereign as man, god, and muse. Louis XIV (charismatically played by Benoît Magimel) is seen here not as statesman but as consummate artist and obsessive visionary, maintaining his hold on his courtiers via the splendour of the world he has cre- ated at Versailles and his own self-affirming glory. Lully glorifies and inspires the king through his music, composing and choreographing lavish pageants in which Louis is the centrepiece, and later collaborates uneasily with his on/off friend and artistic rival, the playwright Molière. Subplots of sexual rivalry and court scheming weave through the film, offering a fascinating insight into the excesses of the court at Versailles. A sumptuous treat for lovers of high qual- ity period drama, with an impressive performance throughout of Lully’s music by Musica Antiqua Köln. (in French with English subtitles)

The Hothfield World Cinema Film Club meets on the 4th Sunday of each month. It is a non-profit organisa- tion founded with the aim of providing community en- tertainment and promoting awareness and appreciation of other countries and cultures, and is run entirely by volunteers. The first day after Christmas My true love said to me, 'I'm not quite sure that diamond ring Is big enough for me‘.

And so I chopped the pear tree down And burnt it, just for spite Then with a single cartridge I shot that blasted partridge My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me.
