  • NEW YORK VOICES March 2007
NEW YORK VOICES March 2007 New York Voices is the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. Like the great groups that have come before, such as Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, Singers Unlimited, Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, they have learned from the best and taken the art form to new levels. Their interests are rooted in jazz, but often Brazilian, R and B, classical, and pop influences are included with equal creativity and authenticity. The group was formed in 1987 by Darmon Meader, Peter Eldridge, Kim Nazarian, Caprice Fox and Sara Krieger. By way of explanation, Darmon, Peter, Kim and Caprice attended Ithaca College in NY and were part of an invitational alumni group formed to tour the European Jazz Festivals in the summer of '86. As a result of this exciting experience, the idea of forming a professional group was born. In 1989 they would sign their first record deal with GRP Records and release their self titled debut album, New York Voices. The group received rave notices and quickly received domestic and international recognition in the Jazz World. From '89 to '94, they released four total CDs on the GRP Label, Hearts of Fire, What's Inside, and The Collection. While recording for GRP, they underwent personnel changes. In 1992, Sara Krieger retired her chair, and after auditioning over 60 vocalists from all over the U.S., the group found Lauren Kinhan. There was an immediate chemistry in fit and sound, allowing the group to make a quick transition and become the "new" New York Voices.

  • BILL GABLE PRESS BIO.Pdf
BILL GABLE PRESS BIO Bill Gable is an American singer-songwriter best known for his distinctive solo albums, “There Were Signs” (re-released worldwide by Sony Records in 2013) and “This Perfect Day.” A sophisticated and accomplished songwriter, producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, his projects straddle the boundaries between pop, jazz and world music resulting in a highly personal and evocative body of work. His newest album, “No Straight Lines,” is scheduled for release in April 2015. Bill Gable’s music has always defied easy categorization. He grew up studying classical piano and cello, has a degree in literature, has travelled widely, and has worked with musicians and studied music from around the world – all of which contribute to his singular style. Singled out for his “superb lyrical imagery” (Billboard) and “exotic grasp of world music” (MAC Report), “it’s the attention to musical detail and the perfect capture of mood with music that make Gable a remarkable artist.” (Jazz Link) Bill Gable broke onto the scene in 1989 with his album “There Were Signs,” released worldwide by Private Music/BMG. The album, co-produced with Rob Mounsey (Steely Dan, Paul Simon), blends jazz, Brazilian and Afro- Cuban influences in a colorful musical landscape. Featuring Gable on vocals, guitars, synthesizers and sanfona, the rhythm sections include renowned pop drummers Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, Crowded House) and Jeff Porcaro (Toto, Steely Dan), percussion legends Airto Moreira, Luis Conte (Madonna, Eric Clapton) and Manolo Badrena (Weather Report), with Jimmy Haslip (Yellowjackets, Bruce Hornsby), Mark Egan (Pat Metheny Group) and Octavio Bailly (Tamba Trio, Bossa Rio) on basses.

Here, Chris discusses the qualities of a good studio drummer, the role of electronics in the studio, and his work as a songwriter. Stewart by Robert Santelli 8 CHRIS SLADE Charles When Jimmy Page decided to return from his self-imposed by five-year exile from the music business, he wanted highly talented Photo musicians for his new band, The Firm. I contextualize Ponder’s technical and conceptual approaches with a historical analysis of developments in jazz during the mid-20th century. In examining intersections between jazz and other popular forms of music during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, I aim to identify Ponder’s “musical identity,” which encapsulates the totality of his musical existence. In this study, I focus on relating musical sounds to social contexts and the processes that give these sound meaning. Musical identity, as a tool for examining the creative life of the jazz musician, is comprised of the individual’s approach to their instrument(s), recording, band leading, performance, song interpretation, and improvisation. From these approaches develops a “voice” with which the musician creates meaningful musical experiences (authentic performances) as well as engages certain social realities in public contexts (affective collective listening).

  • LAUREN KINHAN Biography
LAUREN KINHAN Biography Marking her fifteenth year as a member of the New York Voices, Lauren is no longer the new girl, but a rock and mortar member! Always a primary focus in her career, she has contributed original songs to the NYV repertoire and continues to do so on their latest outing, A Day Like This, released in August of 2007. In 1999 Lauren recorded her debut solo project, Hardly Blinking, an eclectic set of original songs. They are lush with story, built on a musical palate ranging from earthy acoustic settings to cleverly layered productions. Produced by three musical powerhouses, Phil Ramone (Billy Joel, Phoebe Snow), Frank Filipetti (James Taylor), and Rob Mounsey (Steely Dan, Paul Simon) it was an opportunity for Lauren to stretch her wings in a genre that is as interesting to her as the jazz artform. Phil Ramone describes Lauren as a true songstress, like Joni Mitchell and Pheobe Snow: "She is musical, lyrical and really delivers vocally. I am a devoted fan of Lauren Kinhan." You can purchase Hardly Blinking on Lauren's bio page. She has completed production on her follow up CD to Hardly Blinking with the release planned for the June of 2008. It is another all original songbook from Lauren showcasing her deep appreciation for melody driven music interpreted in many genres and her delicate attention to the prose. The command of her voice fully delivers the whole package. She shares the production with the multi-talented Ben Wittman (Produced Jonatha Brooke, Patty Larkin, Lucy Kaplansky, Peter Eldridge) who played drums, added arranging layers and mixed the project with seemless expertise and precision.
