ALBUM FACTS Genre: Alternative Roc Description: Nonesuch Records releases Confessions, a collaboration between the acclaimed American composer Nico Muhly and the Faroese singer/songwriter Teitur , on October 21, 2016; the vinyl edition is due November 4. The two musicians began work on the project when Muhly was composer-in-residence at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The songs' lyrics were inspired by or culled from video and commentary the pair found on YouTube. Muhly and Teitur will perform songs from the album with New York Baroque Incorporated at New York's (le) Poisson Rouge on Friday, October 21, and with British Sinfonietta at Cadogan Hall in London on Saturday, October 29.

"We came up with this premise of boring videos, home videos," Teitur explains. "It was a time when everyone was posting these meaningless videos. It was just fascinating when we started watching them … The more you watched them the more you started to wonder, 'What is behind this? Why are people doing this?' They are really saying, 'This is really beautiful, this is really sick, this is me,' people confessing things. And that gave us the title for the record."

"Teitur took a lot of these things," continues Muhly, "and looked at the comments and imagined the world that these people inhabited. We also solicited some anonymous Dutch videos, people telling us things that are unexpected, including this woman who said 'I love the smell of my printer in the morning.' It made me so happy. That smell is so specific. These are not confessions in a dirty way but more like if you went over to a friend's house 10 minutes before they expected you and you got a glimpse into something private. As a songwriter, Teitur focuses on a little detail or a little gesture, and then one can divine bigger content."

Holland Baroque's mission is "to convince a large and varied audience of the flexibility and vitality of (Baroque) music." As Muhly notes, "They perform standing up, and they are as old school as you'd like, but they chewed into this material really gleefully. It was a kind of magic project actually."

When he began his tenure at Eindhoven, Muhly says, "I knew I wanted to work with this Baroque ensemble. The distance between contemporary listening and Baroque music is one of the most heartbreaking and interesting things. Most of the music I like is from the 17th century or before. It's a tradition that never stopped—a small tradition, a specific one. There is something incredibly direct about Baroque music and Baroque instruments." He continues, "But it also posed a different challenge. Baroque musicians aren't accustomed to the sorts of rhythms attendant to contemporary music, and that brought another interesting tension to the project."

The original four songs from Eindhoven worked so well that Teitur and Muhly continued writing. By 2009, they had a concert-length piece comprising the 14 songs onConfessions. Muhly, Teitur, and Holland Baroque toured the Netherlands, performing the piece with the videos that inspired it projected behind the players; they recorded the songs at the end of the tour.

What's most fitting to THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE is the personal relationship between Rumer and Shirakbari. The pair married in 2015 in Shirakbari's native Arkansas after first meeting at a Dionne Warwick gala at the Royal Albert Hall where Rumer was to sing a duet of Bacharach & David's "Hasbrook Heights." With Shirakbari having worked for 25 years with Bacharach and 30 years with Dionne Warwick-serving as musical director to them both-this could even be deemed "a Bacharach romance." It was a natural project for the newly married couple to create together, with both having great respect and reverence for the song catalogue.

Some of the songs on THIS GIRL'S IN LOVE are as familiar as any from the 20th century. Which is why Rumer and Shirakbari decided, in many cases, to remake/remodel them, affording these standards a melancholia that gets right to the emotive core of Bacharach's melodies and David's lyrics. Where before "(They Long to Be) Close to You" might have been slightly wistful, here there is a sense that the lyric's longing is unlikely to be consummated. "The Look of Love" is more sepulchral, with just a taste of the bossa nova tendencies of the '60s versions. "You'll Never Get To Heaven" has all the sophistication of Dionne Warwick's take, but with a new attention to the cautionary narrative of the lyrics. And Rumer has dug deeper into the catalogue to find the hidden treasure "Balance of Nature" and made it her own.

Rumer was born and spent the very early years of her life in Pakistan. Her father's engineering job led her along with six other siblings to Darbela Dam, 30 miles northwest of Islamabad. Previously, the job had taken them to the Western Australian outback and Tasmania as well as to South Africa. . Her brother Rob gave Rumer her first guitar which she taught herself to play, and years later, she wrote all the songs on her debut album, Seasons of My Soul.

Life changed when the family returned to the UK and settled in the New Forest. Her parents having separated, Rumer was educated in Carlisle with her Dad, and spent summers in the New Forest. She left school at 16, and began to drift; studying at Art College in Devon and then joining a fledgling indie rock band, La Honda. Plays from Radio 1 followed, as did early support from NME.

Her mother died in 2003, and Rumer hit rock bottom. The lyrics of songs like ‘Healer' document Rumer's journey through grief. On the dole and back in London, Rumer took action. She travelled to a stately home in the countryside, where she essentially lived as part of a commune, owned by a "charismatic, philanthropic baronet.

Rumer's luck changed when she met award-winning TV and musical composer Steve Brown (It's A Wonderful Life, Spend, Spend Spend) at the Cobden Club in Kensal Rise. Rumer and Steven worked together and produced the first single ‘Slow'. Having been signed to ATC Management, all corners of the industry quickly began angling for her signature. Then, in March, her hard work paid off, and Rumer finally signed to Atlantic Records. She released Seasons of My Soul, her self-penned debut album in 2010.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Classical Description: CALLAS REMASTERED The new technology When Maria Callas died in 1977, she was already a legend. Several attempts have been made over the years to re-master her studio and live recordings; it’s only now, four decades after La Divina’s death, that re-mastering technology has advanced to the point that a team of elite sound engineers could present these recordings with greater clarity than ever before, as if the listener was with Callas in the studio. The 2014 Maria Callas Remastered project presents her complete catalogue of studio albums and rarities from 1949-69 in a sound quality that has never previously been heard: for the first time each recording has been painstakingly re-mastered in 24-bit/96kHz sound at Abbey Road Studios using the original master tapes. Allan Ramsay, one of the team of engineers responsible for this re•mastering of all Callas’s studio recordings tells us: “With high definition, you’ll be able to experience sounds which have only been heard up till now by people who were either present at Callas’s recording sessions, or who had access to the unique master tape. And digital editing software has become so sophisticated that we can correct problems which were insoluble even a few years ago. The listener will experience something as close as possible to the actual recording sessions. … The best way to explain a high-definition remastering is to use the metaphor of a digital camera. Imagine the difference in image clarity between a 1-megapixel camera and a 12-megapixel camera. It gives an idea of the resolution we’re now able to achieve.. … We’re simply removing the inefficiencies of the recording process of the time. All we want to do is remove the specks of dust, as it were, and wipe the glass clean. We’re presenting the recording in the best possible light, and as the artists would have wanted it to be heard.’

ARTIST & INFO Maria Callas was born to a Greek family in New York in 1923. Her vocal training took place in Athens, where her teacher was the coloratura soprano Elvira de Hidalgo, who had sung with Enrico Caruso and Feodor Chaliapin. After early performances in Greece, Callas’s international career was launched in 1947 when she performed the title role in Ponchielli’sLa Giocondaat the Arena di Verona in Italy. Her voice defied simple classification and her artistic range was extraordinary. In her early twenties she sang such heavy dramatic roles as Gioconda, Turandot, Brünnhilde and Isolde, but over the course of her career her most famous roles came to be: Bellini’s Norma and Amina (La sonnambula); Verdi’s Violetta (La traviata); Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Anna Bolena, Cherubini’s Medea and Puccini’s Tosca. Though her timbre was not always conventionally beautiful, Callas’s musicianship and phrasing were in a class of their own. She brought characters to vivid life with her skill in colouring her tone and making insightful use of the text. She is credited with changing the history of opera: by placing a perhaps unprecedented emphasis on musical integrity and dramatic truth, and by transforming perceptions – and reviving the fortunes – of the bel canto repertoire, particularly Bellini and Donizetti. The 1950s marked the height of Callas’s career. Its base lay in the opera houses of Italy, and she became the prima donna assoluta of Milan’s legendary La Scala – notably in the productionsof Luchino Visconti – but her operatic appearances also encompassed London’s Royal Opera House, the New York Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opéra, the Vienna State Opera, and the opera houses of Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Lisbon, and, in the early 1950s, Mexico City, São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. From 1959, when she started a life-changing love affair with the Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, her performing career slowed down and her voice became more fragile. Her final stage performances came in 1965, when she was only 42. There were many plans for a return to the stage – and for further complete recordings – but they never reached fruition, though in 1974 she gave a series of concerts in Europe, North America and Japan with the tenor Giuseppe di Stefano; he had partnered her frequently in the opera house and in the studio, not least in the 1953 La Scala Tosca under Victor de Sabata, considered a landmark in recording history. Callas died alone in her Paris apartment in September 1977.

ARTIST & INFO Born in Berlin, the Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt spent his childhood and youth in Graz, where he grew up in the Meran Palace. His father was a scion of the de la Fontaine-d’Harnoncourt-Unverzagt family, Counts of Luxembourg and Lorraine, his mother the great-granddaughter of Archduke Johann of Styria. He ultimately preferred to study cello at the Vienna Academy of Music. He joined the Vienna Symphony Orchestra as a cellist in 1952.A year later he founded the Concentus Musicus Wien together with his wife Alice, to provide a forum for his increasingly intensive work with period instruments and Renaissance and baroque musical performance tradition. Nikolaus Harnoncourt collected historical instruments and, in addition to his performing and conducting activities, devoted his time to his philosophical analyses of “Musik als Klangrede” (“music as speech”), which have to date remained the seminal works on the performance of early music, the key to an entire universe of forgotten works and musical experiences buried under the sands of time. From 1972 Nikolaus Harnoncourt taught performance practice and the study of historical instruments at the Mozarteum University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Salzburg, while at the same time enjoying growing success as an opera conductor. Born on April 7, 1949 in New York City, Oates attended Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the '60s, where he met fellow student Daryl Hall. The duo quickly realized that they shared a love of rock & roll and Philly soul, and teamed up in various doo wop groups. After the two were briefly members of the group Gulliver, Hall & Oates decided to make a go of it on their own, and signed a record deal with Atlantic in 1972. It took them several years to carve their niche, but by the mid-'70s, they had scored major hits with "Sara Smile" and "Rich Girl." But it was the early '80s that would become the pair's most successful period, as they racked up numerous hits (including "Kiss on My List," "Private Eyes," "Maneater," and "Say It Isn't So," to name but a few), and unquestionably became one of the U.S.' top pop/rock groups. As a result, Oates became a sought-after producer by other artists, as he worked with Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, he Parachute Club, and Chris Sheppard, and guested on recordings by Taj Mahal, Tina B, and Icehouse, among others. Numerous artists have also recorded songs that either Oates penned on his own (or covers of Hall & Oates tunes) over the years, including After 7, Denny Doherty, and Brian McKnight. 2002 saw the release of Oates' very first solo album, Phunk Shui (pronounced "Funk Schway"). He released his second solo album, the reflective 1000 Miles of Life, in 2008 and then took an unexpected turn into blues on 2011's Mississippi Mile; the 2012 live set The Bluesville Sessions was recorded on that album's supporting tour. ARTIST & INFO Many musicians experience a defining moment that inspires them to pick up an instrument. For Bad Seed Rising singer and guitarist Francheska Pastor, it happened after watching a television broadcast of Green Day's American Idiot tour at 12-years-old. "Right after that, I asked my dad for a guitar," she recalls. "Following months of begging, he finally got me one. I just wanted to play rock music. I didn't stop either." Francheska enrolled in Maryland's Let There Be Rock School in 2011 where she first met Mason Gainer who traded in his Guitar Hero controller for the real thing after discovering a box in the basement hiding his old man's Guns N' Roses and Bad Brains CDs.
