• Critical Discourse Analysis of Marsiya-E-Hussain
Religious Ideology and Discourse: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Marsiya-e-Hussain Snobra Rizwan Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Tariq Saeed Assisstant Professor, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Ramna Fayyaz Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan ABSTRACT This paper employs Fairclough’s framework of critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2001; 2003) as a research tool to demonstrate how mourning discourse of marsiya manages to win favourite responses from Pakistani audiences by foregrounding certain linguistic conventions. The data comprising popular marsiyas are based on responses obtained through a small-scale survey and are analyzed from the perspective of ideology and emotive appeal embedded in discourse. The analysis illustrates that discourse conventions of marsiya—in addition to traditional commemoration of martyrdom of Imam Hussian—serve to elaborate, explain and disseminate religious doctrines in Pakistani Shi‘ah masses. Keywords: Marsiya, Critical Discourse Analysis, Ideology, Shiism 1. Introduction This paper provides a close study to examine the distinguishing features of marsiya-e-Hussain and the way discursive choices of certain transitivity features, figurative language and lyrical conventions serve to make it a distinct poetic genre of its own. Though marsiya recitation is taken to be a means of commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain; nevertheless, it means much more to Shi’ia community. Along with other mourning rituals, marsiya is considered to be a means of seeking waseela (mediation) from the saints, teaching and learning religious ideologies, seeking God’s pleasure and so on (‘Azadari; mourning for Imam Hussain’, 2009). All these objectives are achieved by following certain discourse conventions which in turn construct certain discursive reality and weigh heavily on the formation of distinctive opinion and religious ideology in Shi‘ah masses.

Many countries and nations are joining hands towards preserving such cultural assets by way of taking conservation and preservation measures including digitization and documentation. Marsiya or Elegy has gained more importance after the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (a.s) and his companions and household in Karbala. Marsiya has been since written and recited in order to mourning the tragic events of Karbala.

• Female Poets and the Urdu Marsiya by Amy Bard Columbia University
Value and Vitality in a Literary Tradition: Female Poets and the Urdu Marsiya by Amy Bard Columbia University A performers of classical Urdu mar¡iya poetry, Shµ‘a women in India and Pakistan proclaim a set of social, religious and literary values, reinforcing and reshaping the status of the mar¡iya genre. The mar¡iya, a form that usually details the seventh-century C.E. martyrdom of the Prophet of Islam’s grandson, Im≥m ƒusain, has a reputation for being more complex and more erudite than other genres of the Shµ‘a Muslim mourning assem- bly, the majlis (pl. maj≥lis). As authors of poetic texts, a small number of female mar¡iya writers engage unusually assertively with the tragedy of Karbala and with the legacy of the most famous mar¡iya poets. This paper briefly sketches the lives and work of three twentieth-century female mar¡iya poets who manifest a thoughtful and proud identification with a great classical tradition of Urdu poetry. Today, poetic genres about ƒusain’s tragedy—såz, sal≥m, mar¡iya and nau√a—usually frame a religious sermon delivered by a ÿ≥kira in women’s maj≥lis. Although mar¡iya in India dates from the fifteenth century, the form is commonly said to have achieved its culmination in Lucknow, with the lengthy narrative works of the male poets Mµr Babbar ‘Alµ Anµs (d. ) and Sal≥mat ‘Alµ Dabµr (d. ). Nineteenth-century mar¡iyas still enjoy popularity today and are performed in a range of styles: chanted, spoken and augmented with dramatic gestures, or rendered melodically.

• Mir Babar Ali Anees - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Mir Babar Ali Anees - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Mir Babar Ali Anees(1803 - 1874) Mir Babbar Ali Anees (Anis) (Urdu: ??? ??? ??? ????) was a renowned Urdu poet. Early Life His father, Mir Khaliq who was a famous poet and littérateur, took personal interest in the education and upbringing of his son, and entrusted him to the care of reputed contemporary teachers, Mir Najaf Ali Faizabadi and Maulvi Hyder Ali Lucknavi. In addition, Anis's mother who was an educated and pious lady, played a significant role in shaping the personality of the boy above all, it was the boy's own instinctive urge for learning and literature that made him an accomplished poet, proficient in Arabic, Persian and Islamic scriptures, and well-versed in logic, literature and philosophy. Poetry came to him as ancestral heritage, for his forbears, going back to his great grandfather, were eminent poets and men of letters. Anis was the grandson of Mir Hasan who is remembered for his immortal Masnavi, Sehir-ul-Bayaan. His parents had migrated in their old age to Lucknow, where he spent the best part of his life. Literary Life Anis had started writing poetry quite early in his life right at Faizabad, though he perfected his art in Lucknow under the supervision of Imam Bakhsh Nasikh. In keeping with the popular trend, he first tried his hand at the ghazal, but failing to make much headway in this sphere, he changed over, under the advice of his father, to the writing of marsias,
