Vertical Aerodynamics of Reusable Vehicle

The aerodynamic characteristics of a vertical landing rocket are affected by its engine plume in the landing phase. The influences of interaction of the engine plume with the freestream around the vehicle on the aerodynamic characteristics are studied experimentally aiming to realize safe landing of the vertical landing rocket. The aerodynamic forces and surface pressure distributions are measured using a scaled model of a reusable rocket vehicle in low-speed tunnels. The flow field around the vehicle model is visualized using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) method. Results show that the aerodynamic characteristics, such as the drag force and pitching moment, are strongly affected by the change in the base pressure distributions and reattachment of a separation flow around the vehicle.

that the flow field beyond the model side is also affected by the blockage of the freestream. As a result of the change in the flow field, the surface pressure on the body side region increases. For these reasons, the drag force acting on the model is reduced. As illustrated in Fig. 2,

the momentum flux ratio fj/f ∞ becomes higher, base pressure becomes lower, and side pressure becomes higher. This tendency is consistent with the obtained results of the drag force measurement. Velocity distributions and stream lines around the model obtained by the PIV measurement are shown in Fig.

3. Figures 3(a), (b) and (c) indicate cases 0, 1 and 4, a) RVT vehicle respectively. The abovementioned figures are shown in Table 2. These results are the mean velocity vector distributions obtained from 300 sets of single instance particle images. Instantaneous velocity field are obtained every 0.5 seconds. In Fig. 3(a), for the case in which the jet is off, the flow is stagnated at the center of the model base and is separated around the corners of the base edge. A symmetric recirculation flow can be observed near the model sides. On the contrary, in Figs. 3(b) and 3(c), cases in which the jet is on, the flow separation around the model does not exist.
