Lufthansa to Launch Airline in Italy

With an initial fleet of six aircraft, Lufthansa Italia will offer connections from Northern Italy to major European destinations beginning in February 2009.

In announcing the new airline, CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber said, "Lufthansa Italia will position us in an important market that is characterized by strong demand and holds opportunities for buoyant growth in the future."

Airline Fees Equal Opportunities

Kate Rice, Executive Editor of Travel Pulse, says there are a lot of opportunities out there for agents and the first place to start is selling air to clients.

"All those fees are really confusing. It is pretty easy to arrive at the airport with two bags and discover you have to drop an extra $40 – $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second – or pay an extra $10 to check a bag because the bag check wasn’t booked in advance."

Additionally, Kate says, if you’re a smart travel agent, there are a lot of tools out there at your disposal.

"In 2009 Sabre is rolling out its Attribute Based Shopping, which will essentially let you easily compare travel options and what they cost – and Sabre isn’t alone in this: other GDSs are rolling out tools with similar capabilities."

Q: Are all room rates commissionable? A: Corporate, rack, weekend, group, and package rates are commissionable, but certain government rates, negotiated rates and most convention rates are not. Travel agents will be advised at the time of booking if a rate is not commissionable.

Q: How does a commission payment work? A: Individual hotels are responsible for paying commissions directly to travel agents. Payment times vary based on the hotel’s cycle for payment, A small number of our hotels use a centralized commission processing program either through Pegasus Solutions or WPS. Hotels participating in such programs will have the commission processed and sent by these companies.

Q: What travel agent numbers does Preferred Hotel Group recognize? A: Preferred Hotel Group recognizes and pays commissions on the following numbers:

● Airline Reporting Corporation (ARC) ● Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) ● International Air Transport Association (IATA) ● Scheduled Airline Traffic Offices (SATO) ● Travel Industry Designator Service (TIDS) ● Travel Service Intermediary (TSI)
