The discovery of extraterrestrial life would be an earthshaking discov- ery, even more so than the Copernican revolution which shifted Earth from the center of the universe to Phone: its periphery. Stricker Laboratory for Computersystems ETH Zurich, Switzerland Revised 24 November 1999, Christian Kurmann 1 Introduction The Patagonia CloneSys is designed to provide easy system installations on multi- boot and multi-purpose Clusters of PC’s. Do keep it easy and circumvent the devel- opment of a proprietary system it is based on standard UNIX tools and can easily be ported to other flavours of UNIXes. The scripts and ideas are subject to change and are provided as they are without any support. 2 Cloning: Basic Ideas Everybody knows the drudgery involved in manually setting up and rolling out new PCs, updating existing PCs, and recovering failed PCs. CloneSys makes a big dent in the time required to conduct these jobs. It first creates an exact image of a PC’s hard drive, effectively taking a ”snapshot” of all the files — hidden, visible, and active — that make up the operating system, applications, and configuration settings. The image can then be copied to any number of PCs, thereby creating completely identical installations. Moreover, it can be copied to many PCs simultaneously. This process it completely operating system independent which makes the system very easy and fast. As the raw disk data is copied, no file system initialization is needed, even the partitioning is implicitly done with a total clone. To support multi-boot environments the installation of single partitions is supported as well. To keep the system even easier as other commercially available tools we based it on freely available UNIX tools and Linux.

    A Preprint typeset using LTEX style emulateapj v. 11/10/09 TERRESTRIAL PLANETS ACROSS SPACE AND TIME Erik Zackrisson1∗, Per Calissendorff2, Juan Gonzalez´ 2, Andrew Benson3, Anders Johansen4, Markus Janson2 ABSTRACT The study of cosmology, galaxy formation and exoplanets has now advanced to a stage where a cosmic inventory of terrestrial planets may be attempted. By coupling semi-analytic models of galaxy formation to a recipe that relates the occurrence of planets to the mass and metallicity of their host stars, we trace the population of terrestrial planets around both solar-mass (FGK type) and lower- mass (M dwarf) stars throughout all of cosmic history. We find that the mean age of terrestrial planets in the local Universe is 7 ± 1 Gyr for FGK hosts and 8 ± 1 Gyr for M dwarfs. We estimate that hot Jupiters have depleted the population of terrestrial planets around FGK stars by no more than ≈ 10%, and that only ≈ 10% of the terrestrial planets at the current epoch are orbiting stars in a metallicity range for which such planets have yet to be confirmed. The typical terrestrial planet in the local Universe is located in a spheroid-dominated galaxy with a total stellar mass comparable to that of the Milky Way. When looking at the inventory of planets throughout the whole observable Universe, we argue for a total of ≈ 1×1019 and ≈ 5×1020 terrestrial planets around FGK and M stars, respectively. Due to light travel time effects, the terrestrial planets on our past light cone exhibit a mean age of just 1.7 ± 0.2 Gyr.

    Eternity in six hours: intergalactic spreading of intelligent life and sharpening the Fermi paradox Stuart Armstronga,∗, Anders Sandberga aFuture of Humanity Institute, Philosophy Department, Oxford University, Suite 8, Littlegate House 16/17 St. Ebbe's Street, Oxford, OX1 1PT UK Abstract The Fermi paradox is the discrepancy between the strong likelihood of alien intelligent life emerging (under a wide variety of assumptions), and the ab- sence of any visible evidence for such emergence. In this paper, we extend the Fermi paradox to not only life in this galaxy, but to other galaxies as well. We do this by demonstrating that traveling between galaxies { indeed even launching a colonisation project for the entire reachable universe { is a rela- tively simple task for a star-spanning civilization, requiring modest amounts of energy and resources. We start by demonstrating that humanity itself could likely accomplish such a colonisation project in the foreseeable future, should we want to, and then demonstrate that there are millions of galaxies that could have reached us by now, using similar methods.
