Maar veral vir die feit dat sy ʼn vriendin was wanneer ek moeilik en moeg was, en altyd bereid is om te help, al is dit om ʼn artikel te gaan soek. Dankie Von! Laastens, dankie aan God die Vader, wat my die vermoë gegee het om die studie te voltooi. i Opsomming 'n Idiolek verwys na die unieke taalgebruik van ʼn individu. Dus kan ʼn outeur van ʼn teks deur die ondersoek na taalgebruik geïdentifiseer word. Dié studie fokus op die ondersoek na die herkenbare idiolek van Joan Hambidge oor die grense van genres. Die verwagting is dat Hambidge oor ʼn unieke en herkenbare idiolek sal beskik, ongeag die genre waarin sy skryf. Deur die gebruik van forensiese linguistiese beginsels, metodes en toepassings is dit duidelik dat dit wel moontlik is om die idiolek van ʼn individu te bepaal. Alhoewel die forensiese beginsels meer daarop fokus om ʼn outeur te identifiseer, kan die metodologie verbonde aan die navorsingsveld toegepas word om deur ʼn korpuslinguistiese ondersoek te bepaal hoe duidelik ʼn individu se idiolek oor die grense van genres figureer. Deur ondersoek in te stel na die ondersoeksubjek, haar oeuvre uiteen te sit, ʼn letterkundige agtergrond te skep, sowel as om die letterkundige benaderings wat Hambidge in haar onderskeie genres gebruik, en waaroor sy self ook skryf, is die nodige letterkundige agtergrond geskep, wat bydra tot die geheelbeeld van Hambidge, en wat haar beïnvloed. Deur die agtergrond te skep is dit moonlik om te bepaal welke eksterne faktore 'n invloed op Hambidge se idiolek kan hê. Taalkundig is ondersoek ingestel na die oorsprong en agtergrond rakende sosiolinguistiek en faktore wat ʼn invloed op die idiolek van ʼn individu kan uitoefen. Die agtergrond rakende forensiese linguistiek is weergegee, sowel as die verskillende korpuslinguistiese metodes wat in so ʼn studie gebruik kan word. Nadat die agtergrond geskep is, is die empiriese analise uitgevoer, waar daar deur middel van inter- en intrakorpuslinguistiese ondersoeke beide stilistiese en stilometriese analises uitgevoer word waardeur die idiolek van Hambidge geïdentifiseer word. Ten einde die idiolek van Hambidge te kan identifiseer, word gebruik gemaak van die Taalkommissiekorpus, wat as verwysingskorpus dien, om te bepaal of idiosinkratiese kenmerke wat vanuit die Hambidge-korpus verkry word, wel uniek aan haar idiolek is, en of dit ook in die Taalkommissiekorpus voorkom. ii Die toepassing en uitvoering van die metodes maak dit moontlik om te bepaal tot welke mate, indien enigsins, Hambidge oor ʼn unieke idiolek beskik, en hoe hierdie idiolek oor die grense van genres figureer. Vanuit die navorsing is bepaal dat Joan Hambidge oor ʼn unieke idiolek beskik, en dat die idiolek veral sigbaar is wanneer na haar korpus as ʼn geheel ondersoek ingestel word. Wanneer Hambidge se afsonderlike genres egter met mekaar vergelyk word, is dit duidelik dat genre ʼn invloed op die idiolek het, maar ook dat Hambidge nie die voorgestelde genre konvensies volg nie. Alhoewel die twee romans wat vergelyk is nie soos verwag met mekaar ooreengestem het nie, stem van die ander, verskillende genres met mekaar ooreen. Verskeie kategorieë is geïdentifiseer, waaruit dit duidelik blyk dat kenmerkende eienskappe in Hambidge se korpus teenwoordig is. Daar kan dus sonder twyfel gestel word dat Hambidge oor ʼn sterk idiolek,oor die grense van genres, beskik. iii Abstract Idiolect refers to an individual’s unique use of language. Therefore, the author of a text can be identified by his/her use of language. This study is focused on Joan Hambidge’s recognisable idiolect across the boundaries of genres. It is expected that Hambidge will have a unique and recognisable idiolect, regardless of the genre she writes in. By making use of forensic linguistic principles, methods and applications, it has been shown that it is possible to determine an individual’s idiolect. Even though forensic principles are specifically focused on identifying an author, the methodology used in the research field can be applied to a corpus linguistic study to determine how clearly an individual’s idiolect features across the boundaries of genres. By researching the research subject, explaining her oeuvre, creating a literary background, as well as discussing the literary approaches that Hambidge uses in her respective genres, and what she writes about, the necessary literary background was created, which contributes to the complete image of Hambidge and her influences. By creating this background, it is possible to determine which external factors have an influence on Hambidge's idiolect. Linguistic research was done to determine the origin and background of sociolinguistics; as well as factors that can influence an individual’s idiolect. The background of forensic linguistics was provided, as well as the various corpus linguistic methods that can be used in a study such as this one. After the background was provided, the empirical analysis was executed, in which both stylistic and stylometric analyses were performed by making use of inter- and intra- corpus linguistic research, according to which Hambidge’s idiolect was identified. To identify Hambidge’s idiolect, the Taalkommissie corpus was used as a reference corpus to determine whether the idiosyncratic characteristics that were found in the Hambidge corpus truly are a unique feature or whether they can also be found in the Taalkommissie corpus. The application and execution of the methods made it possible to determine to which extent, if at all, Hambidge has a unique idiolect, and how this idiolect features across the boundaries of genres. The research has determined that Joan Hambidge has a iv unique idiolect and that the idiolect is especially clear when research is done about her corpus in its entirety. When Hambidge’s separate genres were compared to each other, it was clear that genre influences idiolect, but also that Hambidge did not follow the prescribed genre conventions. Even though the two novels that were compared, did not match as was expected, the other, various genres did agree. Various categories were identified, from which it is clear that distinguishing characteristics can be found in Hambidge’s corpus. Starting out with four faculties: Arts, Science, Education and Agriculture (currently Arts and Social Sciences, Science, Education and AgriSciences), 503 students and 40 lecturing staff on 2 April 1918, SU today is home to 10 faculties, a vibrant and cosmopolitan community of more than 30 000 students and 3 000 staff members, spread over five campuses. As we commemorate our Centenary in 2018, we celebrate great achievements and ground-breaking discoveries. We salute the more than 250 000 alumni and students, educators, researchers and professional and administrative support staff, as well as our management and governance structures who have helped to mould this institution and cement its reputation as a world-class academic institution. SU, as a public institution, performed its higher education role within the various political, socio-economic, cultural and educational realities and developments of the 20th Century, including the particular form of injustice then prevalent in South Africa.
