President’s Report Peter Kilpatrick

It has been a very rewarding experience being President of the Bendigo Strathdale Rotary Club for the past 12 months. When I joined the club in October 2014, It never occurred to me I would be president in the following July. Although I have had 12 years’ experience in the Yarrawonga Mulwala Club, I really appreciated the support this club has given me.

The year started off with the launch of Violent Free Families which culminated in a concert with Colleen Hewitt at Ulumbarra Theatre in October. A number of members attended the launch in the Mall on a cool July Saturday morning. It was well publicised that VFF was a Rotary Initiative. The Concert in October was a great success with over $4,000 raised

Members of the Club attended Bendigo Rotary Club’s 90th birthday that was held in the Capital theatre. A good night was had by all. Bendigo was the 8th club to be established in and is our sponsor club.

We held our club meeting in conjunction with Castlemaine in August where David Stratton spoke about accessibility and the Trail Rider Program. David was a finalist in the Shine on awards the previous year and won his section. Thank you to Helen Steele for organising this

We held a membership Pie Night with Bendigo South in October. A considerable amount of money was raised for the MEC (a medical condition suffered by rural children in Cambodia) project, but didn’t attract many potential new members. Greg Penno has worked well with Bendigo South to raise money for this project. We also went to Bendigo South for the Foundation Dinner held in November. This dinner was attended by DG Julie Mason and PDG Murray Verso.

The Club ran the Market at Valley Winery in December for the first time. It was previously run by Red Geranium. Members did a great job promoting this market, however numbers were below expectations. Good ideas for next year have come up so it was a positive experience.

The District Leadership team held a weekend meeting at Camp Getaway in February. A number of members went out and provided breakfast and lunch. The money earned has gone towards local and international projects.

Once again the club was involved with Story Time at the Kennington Primary School. The club also organised the purchase of books and all the preps dressed up as book characters.

The big event for first half of 2016 was the District Conference, held here in Bendigo. It was great to see so many members register for this event. I confess, in all my years in Apex and Rotary, it was the first district conference I have attended; and I thought it was a fantastic event. I’m sure district would have been impressed with the support they received from the Bendigo clubs and hopefully it won’t be too long before it comes back again.

President’s Report (continued)

We had a number of vocational visits this year. The first was to the Ulumbarra Theatre which I missed as I was away but I believe impressed the members who attended. We celebrated our 39th birthday with a visit to the Bendigo Tramways depot and a ride on the ANZAC Tram. We had Pizzas and birthday cake as we trundled down the streets of Bendigo. In February we visited B & B Basil – Micro Herb Farm and then went on to the Belmont Hotel for dinner and then in May we went to Bendigo Radiotherapy Centre followed by a meal at the Bridge Hotel. While others were involved, Pam Luxford played an important part in most of these evenings.

We have also had dinner meetings away from our normal Nancy Long Dining Hall. We went to Lyn Comers house for the first meeting of the year. Thank you to all those who made that possible. We then went to the Queens Arms Hotel later in January and then in late March we went to the Mandurang Winery.

The Christmas Trailer Raffle was once again a huge success and for the first time, a person associated with our club, Shirley Draffin, wife of member Neil, was the winner. A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes to organise this raffle and I would like to say thank you to everyone involved. It is our major fund raising event for the year so it is vital it keeps going. At our Christmas breakup we also thanked the staff at ‘Food for Thought’ who always provides us with great meals.

I have been making some headway in having all our membership information put in one place. As our members know, this is Clubrunner. New technology always takes time to be accepted so this is an evolving process. It is important not to have information scattered over various places, as this makes updating very difficult.

During the year the club made a commitment to support the Cambodia projects to the value of $5,000 per year for 3 years. This gives other supporters of the project confidence that we are in for the long haul. At the last board meeting it was reiterated that any local costs associated with the projects would not come out of this amount. This means that every cent of the $5,000 and money given by individuals and clubs will always go to Cambodia.

Our membership did not change over the year. It has been a constant 25. Gaining members is a difficult task but we do have a couple of potential members in the pipeline. Lynne Cooper is also encouraging the club to look at corporate memberships. Being a reasonably new concept, we will need to spend some time understanding the concept.

We have been active in publicising the club in a number of areas. Our Facebook page is updated on a regular basis. Several newspaper articles have been submitted and published, highlighting MUNA, NYSF, Swap Meet, Trailer Raffle, Mandurang Market and our District Conference. We are publicising the Mental Health First Aid program around the university and we have a fortnightly spot on Phoenix FM with radio stars Greg Penno, Lynne Cooper and Anne Peace from Bendigo South

President’s Report (continued)

I get very hesitant when I start thanking individuals because I know a lot of things are done by people behind the scenes that go unnoticed, like Peter Kennedy’s work at Camp Getaway. So I would like start off by thanking all members for making my job easier than I first thought it would be. Being so new to the club, I was uncertain how the club worked; however, the confidence all members extended towards me was very reassuring, so to all of you, thank you. I would particularly like to thank Pam Luxford, Kevin Gallagher and Mike Nihill for being my mentors. It was good to know that they were around whenever I needed advice.

The Broadcaster has always impressed, thanks to Julie Vecht and when she is away Kevin Gallagher. Mary Preston has once again done an excellent job as secretary and Bryan Barras has always kept our finances under control with assistance from John Stewart when he is away. Bruce Elwood has done a great job as Sergeant and Brian Owens has taken care of apologies every week.

I would like to thank the rest of the board. Ken Longford as Vocational Director was unable to do a great deal as he was in hospital and rehab for the vast majority of the time. His impact was still very evident with his and Liz’s very generous donation toward the provision of mental health first aid education and the organising of the raffle tickets from the Waverly Rotary Club. Thank you to Pam for taking over where needed. Lynne Cooper has done a great job with Youth and Publicity. Jan Walklate has been a powerhouse with Community, Greg Penno has never let international drop off the radar and Lyn Comer has been tireless in organising guest speakers with a good deal of help from other members.

When I became President we had a President Elect and a President Nominee. We now have a President Elect but no Nominee. We need to rectify that situation very soon to give our club continuity.

It has been a privilege to be President of our club and I wish Lyn all the best for the coming year. I know she will have the same support as I have had.

Thank you Peter Kilpatrick

Annual Report 2015- 2016

International Report Director Greg Penno

The most pleasing aspect of International Service this year was confirmation that the Rotary District Foundation Grant of $15,000.00 plus the $5,000.00 of community contributions was well spent by our Twin Club, the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh, on the MEC PROJECT. We were advised early in this Rotary year that this money has changed the lives of 23 young Cambodians. In recognizing the success of this Grant, the Rotary District 9800 Foundation Grants Chairman states; “That the Club has set the bar high in advising the finalization and success of this District Grant”, a great result.

Our Club also a contributed $3,200.00 to a Rotary District 9800 International Grant that was put up by the Rotary Club of Bendigo South in support of the Centre for Child Development, run by the NGO, Cambodian Children Against Starvation and Violence Association in Phnom Penh Cambodia. This Grant was used to employ a teacher, purchase a quality camera and dance costumes for traditional Apsara Dance. We have also continued to support our sponsored child Prum Sreyka at the Centre, ($800.00) and by all accounts she is progressing well in her growth and studies. It has been great to continue the relationship with the Rotary Club of Bendigo South and receive their support particularly President Tony Plant and Director International Service, Stephen Lindsay. This relationship with Bendigo South R.C. allows us to make a significant impact in the lives of young Cambodians.

In recognizing the assistance that we receive from the Rotary Foundation when applying for Grants, the Club has contributed $3,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation for this Rotary year 2015 – 2016.

This year, the Club has undertaken to continue supporting Cambodian Projects to at least $5,000.00 over the three year period, from 2016 to 2018 inclusive. With this in mind I have recently submitted an Application for a District International Grant as further support for the MEC PROJECT. The partners in applying for the Grant are Bendigo Strathdale ($5,000.00) and Bendigo South ($1,500.00) District Foundation ($3,250.00) and this Application for the District International Grant if successful will provide a further $9,750.00 to the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh for this project.

In continuing to build and promote the MEC PROJECT with other Clubs I have spoken at the Rotary Clubs of Eaglehawk and Sandhurst, and we have put up a stall at Australia Day 2016 at Lake Weeroona and taken part in promoting this Project to other Clubs at the District 9790 and District 9800 Conferences.

Our Club has continued to use its funds raised for the benefit of others in International Communities, and the members, friends, and associates of our Club can be very proud of the fact that that we have supported, Aquabox ($2000.00), Timor Leste - Liaison Officer, support for Darryl Mills ($2000.00), Disaster Aid Australia for Fiji ($1500.00), Interplast ($1500.00), East Timor Teacher Training ($1000.00), Disaster Aid Australia – Water Kit ($1000.00).

So this Rotary year the Club has contributed $22,670.00 in support of International Projects which is a significant amount in any terms.

Annual Report 2015- 2016

International Report (continued)

A highlight for the Club this year was hosting President Michael Wright and Immediate Past President Peter Gray from the Rotary Club of Phnom Penh when they attended the Rotary District 9800 Conference in Bendigo. Both Michael and Peter expressed their grateful support of Clubs in the Goldfields Clusters for their Projects in Phnom Penh.

We have been fortunate this year to be able to develop a relationship with Phoenix FM Radio 106.7 where Jenny Rainsford has allowed Rotary to have a say ‘on-air’ on a fortnightly basis. This has allowed members of the Rotary Clubs, Bendigo Strathdale and Bendigo South to comment on events, programs, and general Rotary activities in our community and overseas.

We are looking forward to a successful concert at The Capital on Sunday 31st of July, 2.00pm, featuring Gina Hogan and her show ‘Women of the 60’s’. I am confident that we will get great support for this and turn a significant profit for the MEC PROJECT.

I wish to thank my wife Jenny for her support this year, the Board, members of the Club and Friends of Rotary, along with Past Assistant Governor Anne Peace, in her role of assisting Goldfields Cluster Clubs with Rotary Foundation Grant applications, as the representative of the District 9800 Foundation Committee.

I am look forward to assisting incoming Director of International Service, Hans Schajermann with the various aspects of this role.

Thank you, Greg Penno.

Annual Report 2015- 2016

Youth Services Report Director Lynne Cooper

Youth Services has been very active with participation in a wide range of programs. Our quarterly Bendigo cluster meetings mean good communication throughout the year between all seven Bendigo clubs and liaison with Echuca and Rochester clubs. Our club supported the following programs.

National Youth Science Forum ( NYSF): A lot of time was spent assisting local students to apply. Last year we took a different approach and met with interested students and their parents for a combined clubs information session assisted by past NYSF students and parents .The cluster agreed to pool financial resources for the students who were accepted. This is a new approach due to increasing cost of NYSF. Four local students were successful and we have had excellent feedback from them since they attended NYSF in Canberra in January. Applications are now underway for the 2017 round and we have 8 Bendigo applicants. We are partnering with Bendigo Discovery and Technology Centre and holding our information sessions there with the support of their new director Jonathan Ridnell. Tom Houlden from CCB, 2016 NYSF student is only one of three Australian students to be selected to go to the International program in Germany in July. Well done Tom and also Bailey Chappel who has been chosen to be a staffer at NYSF in 2017. Martin Legg, BSSC, spoke at our club recently and has been active in helping this year.

The Conocophillips Science Experience: Maraia Miller from Weeroona College attended the Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre program in Queenscliffe in January and was hosted by members of the local Rotary club. Applications are available for 2016/17 and several students from BSE College are keen.

Rotary Youth in Sailing: A large group from Bendigo and Echuca participated in March however the weather was inclement and they were unable to actually get on the water. All the students have been invited back again. Many thanks to Norm T homas and his team who gave the group a wonderful few days in Brighton.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN): The October camp was cancelled due to bushfire damage to the Lancefield camp. The March camp was held at the Doxa Camp in Malmsbury and a group attended from Bendigo clubs but none from our sponsor school BSSC due to a misunderstanding about the age of the students.

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA): The cluster sent a group and our club shared sponsorship of Ashlee Arnold and Nathan Jordan. Georgia Smith, Friend of Rotary of our club again went as a leader which is a big commitment. This year RC of Bendigo is co-ordinating RYLA. Many thanks to Joy Bruce, director for all her efforts to promote RYLA.

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA): RC of Bendigo Sandhurst Martin Ruffell co-ordinated MUNA this year and initially we had 4 teams but 2 withdrew. 2 teams from BSSC were jointly funded by the cluster. Feedback was excellent from the weekend program and the students certainly learnt a great deal. Many thanks to Neville Page and his MUNA team. ROTARY CLUB of BENDIGO STRATHDALE Inc.

Youth Report (continued)

School Awards were given to students from seven schools in December. Timing for these awards is under review. The club has selected four local schools to support and is in the process of increasing the funding for each and providing this during the third term not the end of year.

Most of our students have presented talks at our club meetings with excellent feedback. We do try to keep in touch with them and seek their participation in future programs. Georgia Smith and Skye Anderson are now Friends of Rotary. The results of each of these programs have been inspirational to all our club members.

Each youth director has agreed to co-ordinate one of the major youth programs. While all Bendigo clubs still participate this will mean a shared approach to the administration work involved in managing advertising, recruitment, transport and cost sharing for the students who attend youth programs.

My appreciation to our Board for their support and to the other cluster Directors for terrific teamwork.

Once again our thanks to the many Rotarians behind these youth programs who make it all possible

Thank you Lynne Cooper

Vocational Report Director Ken Longford

Once again this year we enjoyed a wonderful array of speakers due to the organisation of our programme organiser Lyn Comer. These speakers ranged from Media, aspects of the health community, a variety of speakers of different vocations and community projects.

There were vocational visits throughout the year and the first (October, 2015) being a visit to the Bendigo Tramways and a ride on the ANZAC tram. Our guide and driver was none other than our current President Peter. On this visit/tram ride we travelled from the depot to the Central Debra Gold mine and then back to the Joss House and back to the depot. Peter gave members and partners and friends a guided tour and explanation of the trams at the depot. Some had been restored and some were under restoration. We celebrated our Rotary birthday on this visit consuming pizza and birthday cake while the tram had a stop at the Joss House.

Our second vocational visit was a tour of the new Ulumbarra Theatre. Our tour guide being David Lloyd. David spoke passionately about all the coming together of the old and the new. This again was a partner and friends night and at the end of the tour we enjoyed each other’s company at the Rising Sun Hotel for dinner.

February 2016 members and partners ventured to to the B & B Herb Farm. This was most interesting. We learnt that living plants are packed and sent onto the Melbourne market each day and even to other parts of Australia and as far as Singapore. At the end of our tour we made our way to the Belmont Hotel for dinner and fellowship.

Our final vocation visit for the Rotary year was in May where once again members and partners visited the Bendigo Radiotherapy Cancer Centre. How fortunate are we to have such a dedicated team here in Bendigo to care for cancer patients. From here after our tour we went onto the Bridge Hotel for dinner and friendly chit chat.

The Trevor Peake Rotary Memorial Award 2015 - 2016. This Award is presented to a third or fourth Year Physiotherapy Student, at La Trobe University Bendigo in honour of Trevor Peake, a former Past President, Paul Harris Fellow, of this Club. Trevor was in private practice as a Physiotherapist in Bendigo for many years and this Award was introduced following is death after a battle with cancer. The Club has a five year commitment with La Trobe University and this is the third year that a student has received this Award. The recipient of this Award in this Rotary year is Danica Lang from Harcourt, who was in fourth year, and has since graduated and has obtained work in Bendigo as a Physiotherapist at Bendigo Health.

Thank you Ken Longford

Stroke Awareness Month - September This was held at Strath Village in conjunction with Strath Hill Pharmacy and Pharmacy students from Latrobe University. Organised by Peter Kennedy – a successful day was conducted taking blood pressure and raising awareness of stroke. Thanks to Peter and his team of helpers.

“Light the Night” – October Leukaemia Foundation holds a walk in October to raise awareness and to raise funds for research. We assisted on the night by doing a sausage sizzle – all the supplies had been donated to the local group. We again will be involved in October 2016.

National Swap Meet Catering – November Once again this Club was strongly represented by Gary Jones, Pam Luxford and Jan Walklate on the Swap Meet Combined Rotary Clubs of Bendigo Catering Committee planning for this annual event. Thank you all for a job well done. The help of members and partners over this big weekend once again made this a major fundraiser for Rotary and for our Club. Many thanks to all the able and willing helpers.

Christmas Charity Market – December In conjunction with Pam & Wes Vine of Mandurang Valley Winery the inaugural market was held on the first Sunday in December. About 15 stall holders took place. We only had 1-200 attendees for the day but I think they all had a good time. We had entertainment with Bendigo Brass Band and a couple of other artists, Terry Jarvis was our artist in residence for the day. The Rotarians and friends put on a BBQ and Devonshire teas; we sold Xmas cakes and generally supported all the stalls!! While the event was not as big as we hoped we did not lose money on the event. We have made a commitment to this event for 3 years to try and get it up and running as a regular event. Thanks to all that helped in any way.

Christmas Cakes and Puddings - December We changed suppliers this year – using RC of Melton Valley, $2 from each cake or pudding going to Foundation and $2 being retained by the club. Secretary Mary Preston did most of the organisation. This is a great fund-raiser for us.

District Leadership – Catering Camp Getaway – February Thanks to IPP Pam Luxford for organising this event. Provided morning tea and lunch for a meeting held at Camp Getaway. At the same time we provided lunch for volunteers Scott working on the new kitchen under the leadership of Leon Scott.

SPAN Walk – March A breakfast BBQ of bacon & egg rolls was prepared on Sunday 2oth March, held at the Dai Gum San Chinese precinct as part of the SPAN (Suicide Prevention Awareness Network) walk and the Black Dog motorbike ride. This was as a great opportunity to support another community group. Thanks to RC Bendigo-South for a loan of their BBQ whilst ours was undergoing repairs.

Bunnings BBQ – Easter Sunday To raise some money and to increase our exposure we applied to do a BBQ at Bunnings. We were allocated Easter Sunday! We ran from 8am to 4pm, selling lots of sausages & onions in bread. Unfortunately we had to compete with Easter giveaways and the Easter Fair – but we did make some money and had a great day. Hopefully these BBQs will feature often in our years to come.

Relay for Life – April Our Club was again at the forefront in catering for walkers at this years’ event, with breakfast at 6.30 am. We had a very strong attendance of members to make sure they were all fed. Thanks to all who braved the early morning cold.

Camp Getaway Peter Kennedy has represented the Club on the Rotary District 9800 Committee for Camp Getaway.

A big thank-you to all the members and partners of the Club, who always put up a willing hand to help when needed and without you all being so willing, we would not be able to carry out the great work this Club continues to do. Thanks also to Mike Nihill who is getting our BBQ up to standard to meet the new regulations.

Thank you Jan Walklate
