The Trust delivering Public Benefit 1st July 2018 – 30th June 2019

Introduction

The continues to pursue its three charitable objects – education, relief and recreation – by grantmaking, providing almshouses, social policy work, operating independent schools, working with maintained schools and also through community work. Within each of these areas it strives to deliver its charitable purposes for the public benefit.

Grant Making. This year we made grants to 34 organisations and 19 individuals, totalling £1,053,363. Full details of our grants programme are outlined in our Annual Report of Trustees and Accounts and also on our website www.harpurtrust.org.uk.

Community Events As a result of the success of the community events held in 2016 in celebration of our 450th anniversary year; the Trustees have provided for an ongoing programme of similar activities to benefit local people. This year’s events were “Have a Go With Harpur”, a free, well being focused event in Park, Orchestra Unwrapped, a children’s music project run by the Philharmonia Orchestra with training workshops for teachers and a performance for local schools and a Children’s Art project with a competition, exhibition, artist run workshops in schools and inset training for art teachers.

Almshouses

The Trust provided accommodation and support for five older people in need over the course of the year at its sheltered accommodation scheme Randalls Cottage Homes. At the end of the year these residents successfully relocated to the new Wixams ExtraCare retirement . We enabled a further 36 people to be supported through our nomination rights to extra care schemes within the Borough, including the Wixams retirement village, Oak Way House, Sir House and Dame Alice Court, which were all developed with substantial support from The Harpur Trust. The Trust is working with a number of partners to replace Randalls Cottage Homes with new provision in order to meet the changing needs and expectations of Bedford’s older residents.

Social Investment

This year we embarked on our second social investment, providing funding for a new community nursery for Families First . In addition to running nurseries, Families First Bedfordshire support disadvantaged families in the Borough, and this will enable them to continue to support those families whilst developing a service which will eventually bring a new income stream for their work.

The Harpur Trust Schools.

We administer the four Harpur Trust Schools including , Bedford Girls’ School, and Pilgrims Pre-Preparatory School who between them educate 3,566 boys and girls from the ages of 3 to18.

Pupils who attend our schools receive an outstanding education and enjoy a comprehensive and varied curricular and co-curricular programme, with access to facilities and resources that are not so readily available in maintained schools.

The Harpur Trust also sponsors The HEART Multi Trust, and has an Education Development Advisor, whose role includes strengthening the links between HEART MAT and the four Trust schools, through activities such as TEACHMEET, a joint networking and training event. She also works on the development of mutually beneficial partnership projects for schools in the state sector and the Harpur Trust schools. This year one of her key achievements was developing a project with internationally renowned singing group VOCES8. The singers worked with pupils across the four HEART Academies Trust schools to create a choir which then performed to parents and local dignitaries at the Corn Exchange in Bedford. Their voices were also recorded as part of a project to blend 800 voices from around the world for a mass choir piece.

Staff Fundraising Every year the Harpur Trust central office staff choose a local charity, usually a current or former grant recipient to raise funds for. In 2018-2019 we raised £600 for the Amicus Trust, a local charity which supports homeless people.

Bursary Support.

To ensure a wider number of lower income families have the opportunity to access our schools we offer them the chance to apply for a means-tested bursary to help pay for all or part of their child’s school fees. In 2018/19 we were able to support 208 pupils with their school fees, with 70 of these pupils receiving a place. The value of this fee support was £2.45 million.

School Initiatives in 2018/19
